Info Wanted: Are the 1997 Special Edition releases preserved?
Time

The versions I own so far....

The Silver Box VHS S.E.

The VCD set

The Black Box U.S. Laserdisc set

The first and second pressing of the Japanese Box Laserdisc sets

Lee Thoroughgoods v.1 & v.2

......so far.

...........ooooops, I lied....I own the old crappy 5 Star Edition DVD's as well.

;)

I would be most happy to get a newer version of these.  A dedicated thread for this project would be good too.

There has been far too much Original Trilogy nonsense around here lately...

Should this comment of yours be taken seriously or was it a joke?

Personally I don't care for the SE, IMO it's a true bastardization that only degrades the original film, but I sympathize with those of you who would like it to be preserved. I first downloaded it in order to help cataloguing all the changes that's been done for 005's thread, and then thought what the heck I might even try to make a corrected version out of it when I'm at it. It's not like I've done anything special no one else can do for themselves, the broadcasts are out there and torrented, I just converted it to NTSC, fixed the AR and restored the missing frames, so far no one has contacted me about this, maybe someone more invested in this than me that have the skills with audio will do what I don't.

Sorry for bringing this into your thread, borisanddoris. I think it's really fantastic that you guys have obtained these discs and working on getting these mixes preserved.

I would be interested ..... I've been so pre-occupied with this audio preservation and home stuff that I haven't been looking at much else.  Drop me a pm.  My download speed stinks but if you'd consider sending me copies I'd love to have them for when this audio is finished.

We've provided the source material on other available avenues for others who might want to work on them with other projects.

How do others see the originaltrilogy.com community?
Time

After reading through this thread I am so glad that we DO have projects going on that are trying to preserve the S.E. (as it WAS when it came out).  We've also seen a surge in audio preservation's over the last year or so which I think makes the larger projects more exciting.  AND I'm glad to be a part of some of these....even IF I get a little impatient, opinionated, frustrated, and what not.  I am thankful that we DO have what we have going on and I'm thankful to ALL of those folks who give up the extra time needed to make them happen for everyone.

Posts like mine and others that echo it should be posted as a response to all those negative ones.  There are real people here with real lives and real passions....and they do try, from the heart, to balance them so that everyone benefits.

I apologize for going off topic and I mean no offense, but I got a giggle out of this.

I'm not sure this makes one "on the level" and it's certainly not assuring to think this could end up for sale like this Macross "import": http://www.ebay.com/sch/CGCMASTER/m.html?_ipg=50&_sop=10&_rdc=1

I don't feel comfortable with you here. It's just my $0.02 anyways.

^ Moth3r's PAL set wasn't from the DC but from the French 1995 THX LDs: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Moth3rs-PAL-DVD-project/topic/1545/

Didn't he use the clv discs and not the CAV.  Someone else on these boards captured the rarer CAV coffret set.

I have always wondered if all the European transfers were from the same masters.  As no one has ever preserved the german releases this is just a guess that they are the same as the french releases.

LeeThoroughgood captured the Coffret Set..... :)

Thanks yes Lee did them i was unable to remember that.  The PAL issue of the CAV release in France.

Lee did a V.1 and a V.2 ... I have them both.  A nice set for sure and I have found that anything LD related looks better on my 20 inch Samsung CRT T.V. than on my 42 Inch Philips Flat Widescreen T.V..

Star Wars Prequel Trilogy DTS CD ROMs...(First Post UPDATED 08 DEC 2012) (Released)
Time

I have to replace the fuse on the SCSI card but when I asked a projection tech he said that the firmware in my machine would allow the disc to play properly.  We are trying to figure out how exactly we should go about trying to access.  Since I am not as technically minded as some here I am having a bit of difficulty doing it on my own.  Any and all assistance is appreciated.

I've been to other forums but folks who know are either unwilling or unable to respond due to contract agreements...at least that's my guess.  I'm hoping that someone has or knows someone that might be able to help us out with this.

DTS changed the file extension from .AUD to .AUE in 2005, somewhere
around serial number 4700 for 5.1 programs and 65415 for DTS-ES titles.

Revenge of the Sith is 65414 and has .AUE files.  Attack of the Clones
is 65471 and is .AUD files.  AotC will definitely play in your DTS-6D.

Once you get the current timecode firmware chip, your 6D will pay the
newer discs correctly.  See if you can find someone that has a spare
v1.46 timecode firmware chip and you can pop it into your player and
then play all discs.  I had 2 6D units and 3 DTS-6 units all operating
perfectly on the newer software until 2009 when they got de-installed
during the conversion to Digital.

I gleaned the above info I got from the person who got me the discs....

Did you ever get a copy of ROTS, or were you just talking about the ones that you can work with?

I have ROTS but it is the ONLY set that cannot be used at this point due to the encoding/encryption used for it.  ALL the others can be accessed and processed for use with their "theatrical" versions.

What is needed is a ¨standard¨ for the SE in the same way that we now see the GOUT as a standard for the OT. That way ALL future projects could sync to that standards video and audio or AviSynth scripts could be written to convert existing transfers to that standard in the way that Darth Mallwalker has done with some earlier OT releases.

This could be LD, VHS or HD broadcasts but I believe that the only ¨true" theatrical SE source we have are these DTS tracks which would be perfect as an SE standard.

It would be interesting to see/hear how close to synchronisation the DTS are with the work done by msycamore earlier in the thread.

Of course, anything like setting an SE standard would need a new thread of which these DTS tracks should play a massive part. Imagine being able to have different languages or subtitles synced together or the audio for the hard of hearing tracks all mixed to the same source......

Ever since I bought my 5 Star Editions of the S.E. I felt that a standard should be set so that these versions DON'T fall in to oblivion.  They are what they are but they were a theater experience.....a celebration of the hard work all those people put in so many years ago to give us something we love even now.  Sure, they got a facelift of sorts but it was a singular experience that should be regarded and preserved for that reason.  I'm glad to see that there is such enthusiasm for this project.

Thanks to borisadndoris and Eldonante's Jurassic Park project, it grew wings and inspired me to see it forward.  Preserving every open aspect available to us as fans keeps me here and gives me hope.

Here's a question....did all of the SW movies see a TB-Broadcast release in theatrical form?

The thing with these DTS soundtracks....is that they are theatrical audio...not the DVD version audio and as far as I have read....the PT theatrical releases did have some adjustments made to them when they were released on DVD so if there aren't any "theatrical"versions available in HQ they'd have to be re-created....like Ady's TPM Theatrical release with color correction.

The 97 SE versions (pre-DVD??) did see a broadcast but, if all else fails....a new Laserdisc and/or VHS transfer might be in order to make things work best.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

To cite an extreme example, if I wanted to watch the special edition and all I could pick from was the 1997 version in 384 kbps laserdisc AC3, or the 24-bit lossless mix on the 2011 Bluray . . . do you see where I'm going with this?

Well then, it's a good thing we'll have another audio choice once the theater dts project is completed......maybe it'll give the SE a little more credibility as an archive project.

Thanks :-) I would greatly appreciate it if someone could sync the ANH SE audio to the Reivax version, I was going to burn it but it only has French in it so it would be cool to add the DTS audio to it and burn to DVD9.

What I always wanted was to have the original SE versions with the cinema DTS & the 5.1 audio.  To make it an archive of that particular moment of history for the Trilogy....stand alone, because it started out as an anomaly which has now been supplanted over time by GL as his original vision.  Feelings on that aside I always enjoyed the SE as the stand alone it was for theaters.

That being said, it obviously got screwed up during the process.  I just want to remember it the way it WAS....not what GL has turned it into.

As soon as I score TESB DTS audio I would like to get it all processed....THEN, look at which version ....i.e. TB, Reivax, Flunk, or Ady's color corrected version the audio would better suit as a stand alone set.

Still pictures are fine but will it hold up while in motion?  Now I know I'm a noob when it comes to color correction and such but since these movies are already all across the board when it comes to source prints I'd think one would still have to go frame by frame to make something like this work properly, correct?

I do like the look of the comparisons but the science of the process is mind boggling to me....LOL.

Huge thanks to all working so hard to make these versions possible for everyone to enjoy.

Cheers
