Godzilla - Anchor Bay 1997 VHS Set Captures (Released)
Time

Jedit:

Thanks Tservo, for the explanation.

Oddly, even though they were released by Anchor Bay, the Star Maker intro is still present as is the R&G Video logo that comes afterwards.

I guess it’s time to capture some pcm audio from these puppies in case anyone wants the additional format for an archival release.

Do you mean VHS Hi-Fi?

Of course, if you’re using a mono VCR for capture, it won’t matter much.

Unless a video label was super cheapo in it’s tape duplication, even a SLP recording ought to have Hi-Fi tracks.

So you’re saying it should be stereo and that a pcm capture would be fine? LOL

What I am thinking of doing is making ISO’s of each disc and then making them available to those who may want them for projects. If PCM audio is needed I could do that but it wouldn’t be right away.

Is there any interest in this idea?

Secondly, does anyone know what audio format is used for VHS tapes such as this? These 5 I did are all SP mode. I am waiting on my Godzilla Vs. Megalon SP VHS so I can cap that one as well. Is PCM audio worth doing for all of them?

Cheers!!!

All I can say as a supporter of archiving film is that this is a great opportunity to capture yet another piece of fine celluloid history that can be watched by many like me as it was seen by us when it was released originally. I fully support this effort and others like it for this reason.

Keeping the past alive helps us understand our future better.

Odd that Walmart would offer Betacam transfers, as it’s not a consumer format. Are you sure it’s not Betamax they’re talking about?

And did you ever get a quote from any pro transfer house?

I did not search out any transfer houses yet. I found this today …

As for Wal-Mart … I guess I got confused. They do Beta but it doesn’t specify Betacam, 😦.

I am capturing this set as I type. I should be finished sometime tonight. I will drop an update once I’m done.

😃

JEDIT:

I am burning directly to DVD-9. Audio will only be 256kbps. If needed, I could probably run and capture audio through PC, and go with PCM 2.0. I am unsure as to what audio quality these VHS tapes have. They ARE all corded in SP mode on VHS and in SP mode from the Panasonic DVD recorder I use.

Is there even equipment for transferring Betacam footage onto other mediums?

There is … it can be pricey depending on how far one is willing to go. I know we have people in the wild who have done it and I was hoping someone might want to pitch in and help. Wal-Mart actually does transfers of this medium … I will probably have to remove all indicators on the tape and take a chance that they’ll do it without scolding me once they see whats on it, LOL.

As I said, try for a Burbank SP release if you can’t find an Anchor Bay - according to Toho Kingdom, the AB VHS was a direct port of the Burbank, down to having their logo at the start. (Burbank was apparently a subsidiary of Video Treasures, something I did not know until today.)

I will try to track it down. It would be nice to have with these others. Thanks for the info TServo.

Alas, Anchor Bay started out as one of those bargain basement video labels.

Do the spools on the tapes in this auction look “fatter” than yours?

Yes, they do.

😃

It appears the Godzilla vs. Megalon had an SP counterpart as well but it will have to be purchased separately.

Back to the drawing board, LOL.

I purchased this set finally. It will arrive within a week. Now to find a Megalon SP VHS.

Cheers!!!

Huh ?? I did not get you.

I was being humorous about all your obvious passion for what’s happening. These projects are in good hands and the people doing them have the knowledge to do them proper justice. When I read your posts, and I’m not saying anything bad here, all of your requests for things you want to see are a little overwhelming at times.

I’m not saying anything mean, I’m just saying I think these folks know what you know and have already considered the options you’re requesting when they took on the projects. They already know what they and the fans want to see.

I jut think your obvious knowledge would be better served by answering questions from those who may not understand the process as you and the project people do instead of requesting everything you may want to see from these projects.

No disrespect meant or intended, just my opinion as a reader and follower of these wonderful projects.

Cheers Papai, keep sharing the knowledge, it helps people get a glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes.

Ok. Good to know. But how does this colour chart work? I want to learn, that’s all.
The other thing here is that the print is faded. So it’s not colour accurate anyway. What other sources will you guys be using to find the proper projected print colour and brightness?

I have seen a Telecine (not telesync) of a 35mm release print of Interstellar which is completely different colour-wise to the Blu Ray or DVD. The telecine has a warm yellow-green look with more sunburnt skintones which is very similar to how most photochemically timed prints appear when projected with warm bulbs, while the DVD and Bluray has a cooler blue-ish tone. The telecine looks absolutely gorgeous colour wise, and now when I look back at the BD or DVD, I find them uninteresting to look at.
The gold-toned image is what we’ve come to associate with photochemical prints and 35mm screenings. And as I said earlier, even the Blues in the prints look somewhat violet/purple shifted.
