Info: My Logo Preservation Project
Time

The MGM sourced version of Look Back in Anger, starts and ends noticeably abruptly because the credits and soundtrack have been slightly snipped, in order to remove the opening and closing Warner Bros logo. Whilst I understand that sometimes it is necessary to change or remove logos because an asset has changed hands in the corporate world, they’d rather mutilate the film than let the audience see that it was originally distributed by a different studio? Absolutely insane!

Another aspect of this Orwellian revisionism, is that the history of mass media, especially with regards to consolidation and vertical integration, has in turn, been erased from the audience’s awareness. For example, during the 80s, I remember watching programming by Columbia Pictures Television that featured the following as their end title logo:

CPT

At the time, as a child, it was interesting to see that Coca Cola owned a major media organisation but todays audience can’t make that casual observation because Sony have gone through much of the CPT back catalogue and retroactively altered the logos to this now very familiar sight:

SPT

Is the 1992 UK VHS of The Charge of the Light Brigade the longest version available?

Yes, it would appear so. The 1997 MGM W/S LD, the DVDs and the UK TV broadcasts aired on different channels have been sourced from the shorter U.S. cut.

Blue Thunder (1983) - these releases contain one additional scene not included on the DVD/Blu-ray versions.

More than one scene: 😃

If you mean that one shot that’s shown earlier then your right.

Do all the LDs contain the extended version? I thought it was just the pan and scan releases?

Where did you hear that it was only the Pan & Scan releases?

Another entry for your list is Explorers. The 80s home video releases were re-edited by Dante apparently and they include scenes that are not present in the DVD-Blu-ray theatrical version.

Thanks, did all the VHS releases from the 80’s and 90’0s contain this scene?

To clarify, that scene is from the theatrical cut, which has only ever been released on VHS (CIC) in PAL European countries and that was during the 80s/90s. The theatrical cut airs on UK TV fairly regularly.

Explorers UK VHS

Explorers UK VHS II

The current worldwide DVD release by Paramount uses the Dante re-edited “Special Home Version” that was released in the US on LD, VHS and Beta during the 80s.

See below for a thorough discussion of the differences. 😃

Regarding Blue Thunder, I looked into purchasing the US NTSC W/S LD a while back but the one I saw for sale on eBay appeared to have the theatrical running time. This is why I suspected that only the early pan and scan versions contain the additional scenes.

Another entry for your list is, The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968).

All current DVDs use the U.S. cut, which is shorter by 7 minutes. There was a 1992 UK VHS release that featured the original full length version. Whenever it airs on TV, I’ve recorded it, in the hope that the full length version might turn up but nothing so far.

Idea & Info: The Day After (1983) rough cut preservation?
Time

Likewise, when it was aired in the UK.

Threads, the BBC’s equivalent film that was made during the same period, is even more terrifying.

The original broadcast version, if it can be found would also deserve a preservation because it featured an actor mimicking Reagan’s voice during the final scenes - and complaints led to this dialogue being dubbed over for all subsequent versions.

The title seen during the closing moments of the Scarface Special Edition DVD, “this film is dedicated to Howard Hawks and Ben Hecht” has a different screen position and text colour from the version featured on the 1998 widescreen VHS release. I suspect but can’t confirm 100% that the VHS (and LD, presumably) title text is very likely from the theatrical print and de Palma probably created a new version for the SE DVD. Sadly I no longer have a copy of the W/S VHS release from which I could produce a comparison screen grab.

I have the '98 Scarface DVD which i’m pretty sure uses the same transfer as the laserdisc. I know it’s non animorphic and looks alot rougher than the 2003 Anniversary Edition transfer. I could screencap it for you if you’d like, I’d just have to do a little digging in my closet as I’m not sure which box it’s in at the moment.

That’s really nice of you to offer. Yes, if you can, please do. 😃

Does the '98 DVD contain the English intro text crawl? Universal erased it from the 2003 DVD and they replaced it with DVD generated subtitles, depending upon the language selection. This completely skipped my mind, till the theatrical version aired on TV recently. I don’t know what the case is with the Blu-ray. It’s insane the amount of subtle or glaring revisions that are visited upon films.

It’d lay a lot of rumours to rest, mainly the extra speeders and the Jango Fett jetpack thing.

It’s been a few years since I listened to it but I’m certain the AOTC audio commentary confirms that the jetpack sparks were increased in number for the home video releases, in order to make it clear to the audience that Fett was attempting to escape Windu’s attack but the unit was damaged.

You piqued my curiosity now, as I have never heard about those scenes not available on the theatrical releases. I used to watch those movies as a kid, so I really want to know more about them - as the BDs are lacking any sort of deleted scenes. Can anyone point me to a place discussing what’s been added/removed?

The, “son of a butthead” and, “stinkin’ punk” alterations really bemused me when the BBC aired the edited for television version years ago.

Speaking of which, here’s a compilation from the BBC airing:

Just a heads up for anyone who might be interested: Channel 4 (UK) are showing the entire trilogy over the Xmas period but they’re all in afternoon to early evening slots, so they’re going to be edited for content. Nevertheless, it might be worthwhile to have a look and check out the print, framing etc. in case they’re aired again during a post-watershed slot.

Also might be worth checking if they use the audio overdubs as well.

I suspect that C4 will mute the audio or remove the scenes entirely - as they’ve done with Avatar and Titanic every year. I haven’t seen any overdubbed versions of films on UK TV in decades. Nowadays, they just hack the film to pieces instead of buying the censored package.

JEDIT: I’m away from home and didn’t set my PVR to record them. If you do, please let me know about the quality and the edits.
