Think about how many times I've said that since starting this site (one time, including this instance). Think about how much leeway people have gotten here for all kinds of stupid behavior. Then try to think how pissed I'd probably have to be to say that to someone.

If I had to listen to the same garbage from you that I've heard boon yammering about here, there, and via PM for the last few days, you would be told to shut the fuck up. And promptly.

Somehow, I doubt that would be the case.

I think this whole thing comes down to a misunderstanding. Boon claims that he and his "associates" took Jay's offer to host your site as some sort of issue of control. But at the same time, your new forum makes you look like you're trying to compete with OT.com.

To be honest, when Dayv first showed me the site a day or two after it went up, I didn't know what to think. Dayv talked about it as a "sister site" to OT.com, but if that was your intention, why start a large forum with topics about preservations, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Sci-Fi? You can't expect us to take that in any other way than you're trying to compete with OT.com.

Boon, you assume Jay is talking about money as if his only goal is to profit off of this site and fanedits.com. Like Jay's some sort of Phillip Wise TFN mogul who doesn't even know anything about the fanbase and is only in it for the money. This is far from the truth and you know it. Jay throws the money issue into the equation as an experienced webmaster should. By throwing up a web site and a forum on someone else's server, I hardly expect you to know anything about what it costs to run a site with as much traffic as OT.com. But Jay does, and he knows that this site costs hundreds per month just for hosting costs alone. As one of the admins of this new web site, you should understand things like this. It's not about charging people for admission, it's about being able to pay for the privelege of having your web site online every month. Just ask Xavier over on MySpleen how important money is.

This whole situation is rubbing everyone the wrong way. It's unfortunate that things like this happen, but it is inevitable as the evolution of our community comes to pass.

My guess is that this post will be completely overlooked by certain parties because it contains too much common sense and rational thought.

Boon: as far as web hosting costs go, find a reliable host that responds to e-mails within 5 minutes every time and knows what the hell they're doing (rare), then ask them how much it costs to host a SQL Server database approaching 200 megs.

This is what I've been saying to these guys from the beginning. Instead, I get a bunch of lip in return about how I'm sour they "beat me to the punch".

Boon, I offered exactly what you asked for: you keep your site intact minus the forum, and you can discuss the site here openly. I only offered to host it because your hosting costs go to zero and everything is housed in one place. That, I still believe, is what's best for the community. You never would've had a banner ad or anything that made your section of ot.com profit-generating. It would've been YOURS.

I never, ever, ever, would've stolen your content or wrestled it from you using whatever legal means Dayv is talking about.

I think the thing that bothers me even more than the way this all went down is the low opinion of me that seems to have come out of nowhere...people whispering in dark corners about what evil plots Herr Sylvester is hatching.

Just ridiculous.

IT'S FUNNY, BECAUSE NOW THOSE "BOOTLEGS" ARE CONSIDERED FAN PRESERVATIONS OF THE OOT. "BOOTLEGS" WERE NOT TO BE SPOKEN ABOUT ON THESE BOARDS.

When this site was first launched, discussing bootlegs was not its goal. Things change, and the site changed with them.

You also acted like a complete nut when I locked that thread. You went so far as to demand your name be removed from the petition.

THERE WAS A TIME PERIOD WHEN JAY WASN'T AROUND, AND BOSSK, GUNDARK, MOTTI, AND I TOOK CARE OF THE BOARDS BY MAKING SURE THAT PEOPLE DIDN'T VIOLATE ANY RULES. YEAH, I'VE WANTED TO BE A MOD ON HERE FOR A LONG TIME, AND JAY HAD EVEN SAID THAT AT SOMEPOINT HE WOULD "IN FACT" MAKE ME ONE, BUT IT NEVER HAPPENED. IN THE OFF TOPIC FORUM WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM PEOPLE DON'T PM JAY THEY PM ME. WHAT DOES THAT SAY ???

That they don't know who the assigned moderators are. Positioning yourself as unofficial mod doesn't make you one.

Also, please show me where I said I'd give you a mod position. I never promised you that.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I made that offer in good faith, told Boon it was his to administrate, and that it could stay up even after fanedits.com went live. And I would've kept my word.

Whatever articles you write for other sites, I recommend staying away from advice columns.

HELL, I REMEMBER WHEN YOU ASKED EVERYBODY IF THEY WOULD PAY FOR A MEMBERSHIP TO THIS SITE, AND WE ALL SAID YES. MANY OF US EVEN OFFERED TO HELP YOU OUT WITH THE COST OF THIS SITE.

Which I never implemented or accepted because of this site's LLC status. The point is that if this were solely about money, this site--and the fan edit community that sprung up--would not be here. I would've taken it down years ago.

This isn't about competing sites. It's about the way in which it all went down and how the private message system on this forum was used as a marketing tool for another site.

Sometimes, it's not what you do, but how you do it that really matters.

You know why there was no notification? Because it's motherfucking Saturday night and I shouldn't be here right now. I should be relaxing with a beer or geeking out and watching ST:TNG. Not babysitting. I'm not in the mood to explain myself to you.

I've already had more than enough of your tough guy routine via PM.

Shut the fuck up.

OK guys, it's pretty clear what's going on here, but can't we all just get along? I don't want Dayv or anyone else to leave OT.com but I also don't have a problem if he or anyone else wants to frequent another site. As Dayv mentioned in a post a week or so ago, there is no reason why OT.com and another site (which I won't name out of respect for Jay) can't co-exist, or even have a sort of unspoken partnership - a sister site, if you will. As far as I can see this whole thing is a non-issue. Having said that, I can totally understand why Jay would be concerned.

Dayv is someone I respect and enjoy talking with. I consider him a friend, and if he leaves I'll miss him. I'm sure we'll still converse via e-mail and possibly 'elsewhere', but OT.com is and always will be my online home and it will be a great shame if Dayv or anyone else started jumping ship. Surely this can be settled amicably without anyone feeling they have to stop being a member of the OT.com community.

I would rather have Dayv here rarely than not at all.

This "sister site" was established without the knowledge of our staff, and its members used our private message system to contact ot.com forum members and convince them to participate. Some recipients of these messages found the situation very suspect and notified us about it. The goals of that site are very similar to my intentions for fanedits.com, which I announced and requested feedback for months ago.

Attempts were made to reconcile the situation. They failed. I requested that no one link to that site from this forum because, quite frankly, I refuse to support it given its origins and the lack of respect showed to ot.com in its creation. Dayv circumvented that request by directing people to another site that links to the site in question, and his posts were edited or deleted because of this.

Dayv's participation here is his choice and it only ends if he decides that is what is necessary.

Warbler: don't demand. It irks me.

New forum software status - updated 1/4/2006
Time
I'm currently working on full text search, which is a huge handicap for the current software, as well as moderation and banning capabilities. My goal is to have a beta that's ready for mod testing this weekend and wider public testing the week after.

I'm sure we'll encounter some bugs, but I think it's important to just get it up already so I can make improvements based on user feedback.

Thank you. I knew someone was going to blow it out of proportion as I was writing it, but then I remembered that I don't really care.

I saw the Budd video many years ago on VHS. One of my close friends was in the police academy at the time, and it was circulating through there. I imagine it came through official channels at some point and made it into the hands of an officer who made a copy.

Pretty gruesome.

Everyone needs to calm down. If I locked a thread every time someone expressed a bit of apprehension towards the topic, this place would be empty.

The genius known as "Whiners" attempted to change the e-mail address he has on file with us to an invalid address so that he could continue to post without us contacting him regarding his trollish behavior. What he probably didn't know is that when you change your e-mail address, a new random password is automatically generated and sent to that address to prevent specifically this type of thing from happening. So "Whiners" can't login now.

I think I'll leave it that way.

Duplicate accounts will be deleted, in case the genius is reading this.

SUPERMAN RETURNS REVIEW

Originally posted by: Invader JennyReally? Are you sure? Because the Superman from the first movie didn't have any problem taking a peak at Lois' pretty pink panties. If that isn't creepyly perverted I don't know what is.

And I don't care that Lois asked "what color underwear am I wearing?" [/skank], Superman shouldn't have looked. Hell, the lead wall was in the way and after Lois moved and had gone on to the next question he then took the opportunity to sneak a peak instead of moving on to the next question with Lois. Really gentlemanly of you Sups. *rolles eyes*

You answered your own question. He was given permission to look as a test of his abilities, and it was a forward way of flirtation that totally fits with the character of Lois Lane as established in the film. Superman is still a guy, after all. I think you're trying really hard to make the "cute" Superman sound less like a creep.

Superman wasn't watching Lois undress and then have sex with Richard. He was eaves dropping, yes, but Lois really wasn't talking to him that much anyway. And as soon as he found out that "she never really did love him" he took his leave and left the family alone. That doesn't sound like a peeping tom to me.

Looking through walls and listening to a private conversation no one else on Earth can hear goes beyond eavesdropping.

I'm sorry Singer felt it was necessary to turn a pillar of strength into a lovesick wuss just so the audience could connect with him. Why is it not okay to look up to superheroes anymore? Do they all have to be flawed or disturbed in some way?

SUPERMAN RETURNS REVIEW
Time
Just got back from seeing Superman Returns. Much like X-Men and X2, I thought it was amazing, okay, and disappointing. I'm just not as impressed by Bryan Singer as most others seem to be.

Superman is now, apparently, an insecure peeping tom who uses his x-ray vision and super hearing to eavesdrop on private conversations. Where's the guy with the strong moral compass and clear understanding of right and wrong? He already decided once that giving up his powers and abandoning mankind for a woman was a huge mistake. Now he's all conflicted about Lois having a life and is actively trying to steal her from another man. Hey kids, Superman never lies...but he'll hide in the bushes and watch your mom change into her nightie. He might as well be the creepy, unshaven Superman from Superman II.

Superman is not an emotionally damaged and traumatized individual. He's not driven to don a crazy outfit and help people because he witnessed his father's murder or was touched inappropriately as a boy. Superman is good personified, plain and simple. Both Jor-El's teachings and the Kents' traditional midwestern values inspired him to be a man of integrity who wants to lead humanity to a better place.

I really don't like what Singer has done with the character.

Superman: The Movie stomps all over SR without even breaking a sweat. Even the mangled Superman II is a better Superman movie. Can't wait to see the Donner cut later this year.

I still rank Superman: The Movie, Spider-Man 2, and Batman Begins as the best superhero movies of all time, and in that order.
