Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?
Time

Only if compression schemes quadruple in efficiency. Ten 30GB HD movies would require a 300GB hard drive to store. A small library of HD content would take quite a lot of hard drive space. You also have to deal with getting that content over a high-speed home network (~40mbps actual throughput, so forget about wireless over any meaningful distance) to your display. Even the vast majority of HD movie buyers--a fairly tech-savvy bunch--don't have the patience or the know-how to set up a home media network. Most just want to watch movies.

Disc-based media will be the standard for HD movie distribution for at least another 10 years unless our networks and compression techniques catch up to the requirements faster than I expect them to.

I was hoping the high definition release would show more of a clearer image with less compression rather than a sharper image.

Those HD screen captures are resized, compressed JPEGs. Trust me--they're not representative of what Pirates really looks like on a 1080p display that's properly calibrated. The actual Blu-ray presentation is smooth and film-like with lots of fine detail, not artificial sharpness.

Would anyone want a Dune remake?
Time
Now that we live in a time when studios have a goal to turn everything into a trilogy or franchise, Dune could definitely get the budget/cast/director/treatment it deserves.

I say give it to Joss Whedon. Despite Serenity's commercial failure, it was a damn good science fiction movie, and I think Whedon has a grasp on the weirdness required to make Dune both faithful to the novel and a nice homage to Lynch's version.

Either him or Stephen Soderbergh. I thought he did a great job with Solaris.

I keep forgetting to fix this one

Since projects can be stored in multiple categories and the category you come from determines certain aspects of the project details page, removing the project from the category you came from causes the output to break.

I'll probably create a redirect that selects one of the other categories and drop the user there.

Safari for Windows
Time
Apple is brilliant at marketing, and this is a blatant attempt at selling Windows users on the Mac experience. Smart move.

What's funny is that many Mac users probably wouldn't rate Safari as the best browser for OS X. I use Camino myself.

Guess I'll download Safari on my Windows box here at work and play with it a bit.

[edit: I see that hyperlinks are automatic if you preceed them with http://]

You can use the following script to add links:

Either...

(creates a link pointing to the URL in the tag and using the URL itself as the link text)

or...

Your link text (creates a link using the text in the tag as the link text)

There are some other formatting tags also. One of the things I need to do is put a full list together detailing the tags.

How about a link to go back to the page that was just edited, then? Right now, I'm not sure how to get back after I've updated the page other than going back to the front page (or the big list). Right now with a dozen projects, that's no big deal, but eventually it will get unwieldy.

Click the "browse" link at the top of the project edit page. It's in the same position as the "edit" link.

I'll come up with a way to make it more obvious.

Definitely need that, don't we? I'll put it on the list.

Also, there should be an "overall" save for adding/editing projects when edit is complete (that is, saves complete edit and returns user to project's main page).

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Most changes after a project has been uploaded will involve a change to one, maybe two fields at a time. Updating the entire project at once after several changes would result in excess load on the server (especially in the case of specifications, which already involve a big chunk of processing) and increase the chances that one user might overwrite the changes made by another user. I think updating one field at a time is the best balance between performance and data integrity.

Unless people really start complaining about the current functionality, I think it should remain as it is.

It's up to the community to monitor their data. If a fan editor is given the ability to maintain their own listings, they have a vested interest in keeping an eye on them and updating them. That's the beauty of wiki-driven sites. They encourage participation, and users are much quicker to sniff out garbage than a handful of administrators who can't monitor the site 24/7.

It's also likely that we'll implement a stability rating system so that when a particular record is deemed "final" or "stable," it's locked to prevent further edits except by administrators and perhaps the original creator. On the other end of the spectrum, if a listing is rated as "questionable" because nobody can find a download anywhere, perhaps we mark the project for deletion unless the creator can prove its existence within a certain period of time. There are always checks you can put in place. We may not have thought of every single possibility up front, but there are always solutions. Building it ourselves lets us implement those solutions as we need them.

Wiki-style sites have their drawbacks, but the strengths far outweigh the weaknesses.

Agreed. I'll put it on the list.

Are the different categories eventually going to split off into their own separate pages, or all stay on the one big index page? Cuz that might get pretty huge.

It will get very large, so I'm working through different ways of addressing it. I might add a kickout menu to the top nav under "Fan Project List" and break all the categories out onto their own pages.

When I entered the name and submitted, it simply didn't add the name the first time.

I think I identified the problem. I was originally requiring both the contributor name and bio fields, so if only the name was entered, nothing would happen. I failed to provide an adequate error message. This occurred on the project details page also. I removed the bio requirement, so now just the contributor name is required. Seems to work fine now.

The word "the" is being counted in the alphabetization of the lists (i.e. The Omen and The Story of Star Wars).

I'll have to see if I can find a workaround for this.

Navigation is key. Everything will be nicely integrated into one seamless site--projects, blogs, forums, image gallery, etc.--all under one user account. Login once and you have access to the entire site.

The other benefit to our setup is that it's built entirely in-house. We can customize it in any way we see fit. That's why we're so interested in getting feature requests from members. We want to build the site to the exact specifications set forth by the community.

Exactly. Anyone can upload new projects and contribute at any time. We're trying to encourage more community involvement and make information availability less dependent on site administrators.

I think the fan editor blogs will be a cool feature as well.
