Fixed.

Not really a bug per se but more of a stylistic thing that I think might belong in this thread. When reading a public profile (at least in the Old Skool scheme), the information appears in a white font that's almost impossible to read on the background color.

EDIT: Yeah, kinda like how this post looks when I read it.

OT Old Skool and OT Lite aren't finished yet. I'm going to finish them tomorrow at some point. Stick with Blue for now.

New forum software - please read!
Time

Believe it or not, the new forum software, which has been a personal project of mine for the last two years, is finally in a state that I feel is ready for public use.

Obviously, topics and posts from the old forum were brought over, along with topic subscriptions, which you can verify under the Subscriptions tab. Unfortunately, migrating private messages would've been a monumental effort, so they were left behind. If you have any PMs that you need to recover, the old forum software will remain available for the next 30 days only. After that time, all content in the old software will be deleted.

This is not to say that the forum software is "finished," because it certainly isn't. There are no emoticons yet, posting requires the use of traditional forum tags (no fancy WYSIWYG editor), polls aren't enabled...the list goes on. However, if I waited until the software was perfect, it would never get out the door.

This is beta software. As such, it's prone to errors, crashes, odd behavior, and other annoyances. Please don't flood this topic with issues and requests; I ask that you post your thoughts in the appropriate forums: Bug Reports and Feature Requests and Enhancements.

One great favor I ask of you is that you report any security lapses to me immediately via private message. For example, if you're not a mod, but you see a link that lets you delete a topic, you're probably not meant to :) These types of bugs are critical and require immediate attention.

Some things to note about the new software:

1. There is now an ignore function. Simply click the "ignore" link under a user's name in a post and select your ignore options. Both your ignore list and buddy list are managed through the User Lists tab (soon to include a Who's Online section as well).

2. Private messages are turned on by default. All members have a limit of 200 messages (this includes items in your inbox and sent items folder). Any of you who had PMs turned off will need to turn them off again (see the Preferences tab). E-mail notifications of new PMs are also on by default.

3. Please take the time to explore the Profile and Preferences tabs to see the options you have available to you for various forum settings.

4. You can save individual posts and personal notes to describe the post by clicking the bookmark link at the bottom of any post. Never hunt for a specific post again. View your saved posts under the Bookmarks tab.

5. Posts can be saved as drafts. If you find yourself having to log out in the middle of writing a post, click the Save as Draft button and it will be waiting for you when you get back under the Drafts tab. No more lost posts.

6. Topic subscriptions are managed through the Subscriptions tab.

7. Full text search, finally! Post titles, post text, and usernames are included in the forum search.

8. Formatting tags that are more in line with modern conventions; I always hated the FuseTalk tags. See the help section for more info.

9. The default color scheme is blue, but I'm working on a color scheme that's reminiscent of the old forum software for those of you who prefer the dark look. You can preview this color scheme by selecting it on the Preferences page. Other color schemes are in the works also.

10. Posts have a Quick Edit feature that lets you make changes, well, quickly. Click the Quick Edit link under your username to activate it.

Things I'm still working on:

1. Polls
2. Emoticons
3. Help/FAQ
4. Save as Draft for private messages
5. The overall user interface (still a work in progress)

Thanks for your patience through all the delays and false starts. The mods and I hope you enjoy the upgrade and continue to make originaltrilogy.com the best place online for open, honest talk about the Star Wars universe.

Soldier Shoots Dog With Smoke Round
Time
The vast majority of servicemen and women take their jobs seriously, I'm sure. Unfortunately, while many soldiers serve with distinction and bravery, many others are in the military because they probably couldn't cut it in a job that doesn't involve shooting things.

I look at it this way: take any number of random people, and a certain percentage of those people will be assholes. For argument's sake, let's say 10% of the general population are assholes--a conservative estimate.

That would mean that 10% of soldiers who fight, 10% of our cops, 10% of our teachers...are complete assholes. And as it has been proven many times recently, some of those assholes get caught on tape.

US Soldier Throws Puppy Off Cliff!
Time
Anyone who can't see the difference between euthanasia of stray animals, killing a turkey for food, and throwing a live puppy off a cliff needs to take a serious look at themselves.

Cruelty to animals is usually a warning sign of other serious mental and emotional problems. The guy should be discharged simply for being dumb enough to let it end up on video.

Funny to see someone with the brainpower of a 10W light bulb wearing thousands of dollars in military equipment whose funds could've paid for a bunch of those wells in Africa C3PX mentioned.

So were uncompressed PCM, full bitrate Dolby Digital, and full bitrate DTS. A laserdisc's two-channel PCM Dolby Pro Logic mix put through a modern Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoder actually sounds better than most of the Dolby Digital tracks I've heard on DVD. And Saving Private Ryan DTS on LD...WOW.

Thankfully, Blu-ray marks the return of true high-end home theater audio. Missed those days.

Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?

No, you misunderstand. If the keys to a particular model of player is hacked, then all models of that player will be exempt from future playback until those owners download new keys. Future BD+ titles will have keys that won't play on that model, whether it be owned by the hacker, or someone else who has the same model.

This is simply wrong. Please read what the BD+ spec supports. It is security on a disc-by-disc basis. There will be no revocation of security keys across a whole line of players. The security is on both the disc and the player.

Please read this. Note the following key point (emphasis mine):

Basic countermeasures, which can check a player that is known to have had its hardware hacked—for example, a patch to the drive's firmware—and detect and respond to this hack. This allows new discs to disable playback on standalone players that have been hacked, without having to revoke the license keys of the entire model or line of players.

While there are capabilities for "advanced countermeasures" subject to studio abuse, the market has a way of dealing with needlessly restrictive media. Ask DiVX.

Tell me - how many firmware updates is Sony going to want to "give away" in the future?

Sorry, but it is not unsubstantiated FUD on my part. It is a lack of knowledge on yours.

You just proved absolutely nothing about paid firmware updates with that long quote of yours. I've yet to read any mass media article about HD media that wasn't mostly wrong.

They don't get it, and neither do you.

If you hack your player, then yes, playback will be prevented for specific titles. That's the whole point. BD+ allows the disc to identify a player that's been hacked and disable playback for that specific title on that specific player. BD+ is effective because it's security based on the disc, not on the player.

Simple solution? Don't hack your player. Enjoy the show.

Please stop repeating that nonsense about people being charged for updates. I've seen you post that repeatedly also. It is FUD. No basis in reality.

And root kits on my Blu-ray player? Somebody call the cops! It's an emergency!

I'm amazed at how people have turned a shiny disc that plays movies into a collection of conspiracies. No surprise that Bush has managed to wreck the country if this is the stuff we're all worrying about.

Again, if you don't like evolving specifications, don't buy today. Wait a year or buy a PS3, which has been upgraded to Profile 1.1 via firmware and will be upgraded to Profile 2.0 the same way.

Those 20 gigs give me uncompressed PCM 7.1 audio on shorter films and room for lossless Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA on longer films where PCM won't fit. Totally worth the extra space.

BD+ doesn't disable players. I've seen you post this before, and it's simply not correct. BD+ launches a virtual machine inside the playback device that ensures secure communication between the disc and the player. Should the security in the playback device become compromised, the device manufacturer shares its security key with disc authors, who enable a workaround on the disc that allows secure playback for future titles despite the hack. It does not disable playback in any way. Discs issued before and after the hack will continue to work as expected; BD+ merely provides a way for content authors to secure new releases after a player has been compromised. This won't help older releases, but it protects new releases.

Blu-ray Disc or HD-DVD?

Blu-ray is no more glitchy or incomplete than DVD was when it was introduced. Lousy non-anamorphic transfers, no component video outputs, lockups, layer changes that took several seconds...did you expect something different this time around?

Anyone who bought into the format this early and complains about not being able to play some lameass interactive "game" a year from now should stay away from technology in general. Buy another player if it means that much to you. Besides, which is worse: being able to watch Lord of the Rings on Blu-ray but not access the special features, or watching your HD-DVD copy of 300 for the 300th time because the format died and you can't buy any new movies?

Personally, I'm happy that the finished, but inferior, specification lost to the beta version of the superior format. Even if I hadn't purchased a PS3 and opted for a Panasonic BD30 instead, I would've replaced it in a year or two if necessary. That's the price you pay when you jump in early.

Welcome to cutting edge A/V

The 30GB limit of HD-DVD doesn't just affect the video quality. Rather than count the number of Blu-ray titles that have video encodes that go over 30GB, let's count how many have lossless PCM soundtracks and compare that to the number of HD-DVDs with PCM.

Video quality comparisons between HD-DVD and Blu-ray are usually bullshit because films released on both formats tend to have the same encoding (capped at 30GB), so the image quality is identical.

Blu-ray is the technically superior format and its potential will be realized, just as DVD's potential was realized after a few years.

There has been no firm announcement from Universal regarding their plans. Paramount issued a weak "we will continue to support" statement. MS has said nothing. The format war is over.
