"New" notification

An unread topic is a topic that has received a reply since you last read it. Once you read it, it's marked as read until a new reply gets posted. Along with cleaning up the topic pagination on forum pages, I'll also be implementing a link to the first unread post.

Right now, each user's topic view time is saved as a timestamp--one for every topic that you view. In order to mark an entire forum as read, I'd have to save a timestamp for your user account for each topic in the forum. That would mean hundreds of superfluous records.

I guess I'm not seeing the purpose of the "Mark Forum as Read" function. I've seen it on other forums, but I never really got the point. Can you explain why you want it?

Let's see...

Clicked on the "FORUMS" button in the upper left, and clicked "Star Wars Fan Edits and Preservation Efforts". Then typed "adigitalman" in the Search field, kept the drop-down set to "This Forum", and hit SEARCH.

Results come from pretty much all forums.

That's because ADigitalMan posted in the new forum announcement topic, and that topic is posted in every forum.

Firefox login issues?

Here you go. I actually don't see a domain in the referer comment. This is what shows:

<!-- Referer: -->

That's the problem. For security purposes, the login form processing page checks to make sure the referring page is a page within the forum's URL (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/ in this case).

I'd heard that IE sometimes has issues reporting the referer, but never Firefox. I'll have to look into this a bit further.

Star Wars Prologue - Epic Prequel Edit (Released)

Completely deleting the first post was uncalled for, really. It ruins it for newcomers here who aren't involved in any "drama," and that causes decreased interest in your project, which hurts you. If you have problems with individual members, just use the ignore feature.

That's the kind of thing that has me mulling over locking all first posts by default. It's just bad form.

Regardless, good luck with the project.

Let me get this straight. By abandoning post count and user rankings--two of the most useless gauges of user contribution and value ever introduced to forum communities--we're disregarding "everything from the old forum" and pretending "that the old forum never existed?"

That doesn't say much for the quality of the actual posts, does it?

No forum I visit outside this one that's worth anything uses post count or user rankings. It's all custom titles and post counts in the user profile.

Like I said, get a majority vote of the ~4700 members here and I'll reinstate post counts and user/useless rankings.

Jay, 5k was okay for the smaller avatars from before, but isn't it a little small for the new larger avatars? I had trouble getting an image under 5k, hence why my current one is black & white.

Would 10k be feasible?

Photoshop > "Save for Web"

Plenty of us have full-color avatars under 5K.

10K @ 25 posts per page = 250K just for avatars. That's a bit unreasonable.

Problems staying logged in....
Time
Apparently, I never closed my browser while testing, because once I did, I was logged out also despite selecting "remember me."

I looked around a bit and found a really dumb programming error that would cause this behavior. Basically, selecting "remember me" wasn't actually doing anything because it wasn't passing a value to the login script.

I changed the code, tested it out, and now I stay logged in even after closing my browser and reopening it. Please verify that it works for you also.

Firefox login issues?

I've tested it extensively in Firefox, Safari, IE6, and IE7 without any login issues. Without more details, it's difficult to help out.

So you fill out the form, hit the login button, and what happens exactly? Nothing at all? Do you get a login confirmation, but then still see the login prompt at the top when you're returned to the page you were viewing?

I like the new look - I am having problems with images though! It seems to drop them off my URL - any ideas or am I making a mistake? Thanks man!

Not exactly sure what you're saying here. You're having trouble posting images? See the help page for the new forum tags.

Also, please keep the bug reports/feature requests in the appropriate categories. Thanks :)

I kinda liked having certain titles that you could only get with post counts.

I know this is popular with some people. Unfortunately, it encourages garbage topics like "Rankings" in the off topic section that exist solely for jacking up post count.

As AWK proved, post count is entirely irrelevant.
