I would prefer we not have any ads at all, but the reality of the situation is that we need money to pay for hosting. The ads are performing better in their new positions than in their old positions, so that's where they'll stay.

I suggest that anyone who hates the ads and will never click on them use an ad blocker.

The rules are in place to protect the forum and its members. The advertisers are another matter; they need to police their own content.

That's kind of the point :)

I'm playing with different ad formats and placement, as you've noticed. The right column tends to be very ineffective. Left column and leaderboards beneath the nav and last post in a topic tend to be most effective.

Looks like it might be an ebay ad causing the problem based on a review of the source code. I've temporarily blocked all ebay ads (it'll be a few hours before the filter takes effect), so let's see if that helps.

Thank you. It's steadily improving by bits and pieces as I find time to tackle issues and implement suggestions, which have been very helpful.

But to answer your question, yes, I can remove the avatars completely if they're switched off. To address your other concern, I don't see how the spacing could get any tighter vertically. If a forum has announcements, they're going to push down the rest of the content. That's just the way it is. Compressing everything so it all runs together results in poor readability and difficulty in navigating page contents. I don't consider the whitespace a waste at all.

If whitespace were a waste, all web sites, magazines, and newspapers would look like a page from a dictionary.

Closing this topic down now since most new posts will probably be more appropriately placed within the comments section.

Titles don't change automatically anymore. In fact, you'll be able to edit your title soon enough. There's something I need to fix to make it work though.

In my PC days, I used NOD32 on every box I had, including a dedicated server that hosted multiple web sites. Very little overhead and great virus detection. Highly recommended.

I finally experienced this problem for the first time the other day. Unfortunately, without knowing what ad is causing the problem, I can't block it, so if anybody happens to see the ad, please let me know.

I'm exploring other advertising options, so Google may be gone soon.

Which ad are you seeing when the freeze occurs?

Different ads get loaded at random, so viewing a topic page won't necessarily show me the ad you saw at the time.

Some bugs were identified with the forum script, so I made slight modifications to get around them.

From now on, to turn a URL into a link, do the following (without the spaces):

[ url ]http://website.com/[ /url ]

The previous method, which was [url=http://website.com/], no longer works. To make text link to a URL, the method is the same as it was previously:

[ url=http://website.com/ ]Web site[ /url ]

This should be fixed now. Pagination for posts in a topic should be working properly. Also, if the sort order is set to display the newest post first, the first post is no longer docked to the topic title bar and the background color is grey (blue is reserved for the starting post in the topic).

The subscription notification engine has been updated so it now sends only one e-mail until you view the topic--no matter how many posts are made in the meantime. I tested it out and it seems to work fine, but please report any issues.

Due to the way the new engine works, you might not get an e-mail for the next update for any topics you're subscribed to. It should work fine once you view the topic though and for any new subscriptions moving forward.

Have you tried deleting your current avatar, then uploading the new one?

Edit: Also make sure you refreshed your browser's cache. I uploaded a new avatar, but saw the old one until I refreshed my cache.

I'll check the code to make sure it's smart enough to delete any existing avatars before uploading a new one.

There are two places to delete a PM. One is in the PM list when viewing a folder, the other is on the PM itself. Can't remember which now, but only one of them was broken. The other was working correctly.

I increased the character limit to 100,000.

Edit: Nevermind. Apparently, the hosting service is clipping input at 64,000 characters. I need to resolve this with them.
