Understanding the Prequels (and the entire SW story)

I can't believe there are people out there who still care about figuring out what happened in the prequels

I love the Saga too much not to care, sadly. Not saying you can't hate the PT, but I enjoy the buildup to ROTS (going from Episode IV-III). It doesn't flow smoothly, but it makes for one hell of a marathon when all is said and done.

Thanks for all the "clarifications", I now understand a bit more of the PT, and yes, I'm aware it was written poorly.

Understanding the Prequels (and the entire SW story)
Time

Having watched the entire Star Wars saga multiple times, I still seem to not understand what exactly is going on in the prequel trilogy (apparently no one else does either). For those who have decoded it, can you explain some things for me? I want to better understand the entire Star Wars saga for my next viewing (December 2015 ;-))

Let's start from TPM and go on: what the hell is Palpatine (Sidious) trying to do with Nute Gunray? Why is this war going on? Why does Dooku inform Obi-wan of Palpatine's evilness, but still work along side Palpatine? Why did everyone suddenly realize that Palpatine is bad right at the end? How does this all connect?

tl;dr - I'm confused about the entire storyline of the PT. The only part I really understand is that Palpatine is trying to lure Anakin to the dark side and that he succeeds, until Luke comes around.

Help me OT, you're my only hope.

Star Wars OT '97 SE - TB Airing SD Preservation (* unfinished project *)

Only thing I've done was to take each side of a Japan set and put it to a DVD5.  Each movie has 3 discs.  I also did the same with TPM.  I don't know if these would be of any assistance in this.

As much as I appreciate the consideration, I'd want to stay away from MPEG-2 before I had the chance to IVTC the rips and such.

I heard althor is going to upload a BD of his '97 SE rips. Maybe that might just have to be the final solution?

If we watch them in order... ...
Time

I just finished watching 4-6 then 1-3. ROTS would have been entirely ruined if a new viewer had watched it before the OT. When Vader's mask is put on and R2-D2 and C-3PO are given to Captain Antilles, it wouldn't have meant as much nor made sense to someone who started with the prequels.

Emotionally and logically, it all works a lot better going from the OT to the PT.

I think I have every Star Wars LD release, including a weird PAL master disc, The Keep, multiple THX1138s, Blade Runner in various versions, the SE discs, TPM, a bunch of Disney discs, I'll have to check and make a list.

But just the SW stuff and Blade Runner and THX would pretty much fill a drive.

I also have the OT on VHD discs, as well as Jaws 3D and a bunch of other VHD titles.

Would be interesting to see some OT VHD screen shots to compare with LD. VHD is the only format I don't have a copy of Star Wars on.

Are there still some 3D titles on VHD that haven't showed up on Blu Ray yet?

I had a VHD player and the resolution is almost up there with LD, if not, equal. I captured JAWS 3D and FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 3 3D. It's an amazing format, but it's prone to many problems that LD doesn't have.

I'd be interested in seeing how P&S SW looked, though.

Star Wars OT '97 SE - TB Airing SD Preservation (* unfinished project *)

Did some capturing today with the Diamond ATI card and I seem to be having a very big problem.

The audio pitch keeps changing throughout the capture, thus, messing up the length of the film and the IVTC. Here's a link - http://www.mediafire.com/watch/x1qe4uorhcyyeyw/SW_LD_ERRORS.mp4

Listen VERY closely to clips within the video. Could this be a player error? I don't know much about the CLD-980, but does it have a belt that could be going out?

==edit==

Turned off resync in VDub and it no longer does that. But, I still have sync issues in the capture. I'm capturing YUY2 AVI. Any suggestions to stop this from happening? It doesn't seem to be dropping frames either, it just says that it "inserted frames".

"Faces" '95 THX Laserdisc Preservation (SW & ESB released. ROTJ incomplete)

For those who enjoyed the EMPIRE rip, I'm doing the SE's now, but with much better capture equipment and codecs. I also plan to recapture the FACES set once more with these new methods.

I've tried using Althor's RAWs, but ESB's rars are plagued with errors, so hopefully ROTJ and ANH will come out just fine.

Did you try using QuickPar to repair the damaged files?

Yeah, no luck with ESB, still getting CRC errors.

As for capturing, I managed to get my USB Capture Device to work with VDub, and I've been capturing YUV2 with 16bit PCM audio. Since I can't really get Althor's rips, I'll just do my own now.

I've also upgraded to the Diamond ATI card now, since I've heard it has a good comb filter. I'm hoping it produces decent results.

If I can get a hold of good condition discs, I can make a good rip out of it. On my last capture of ROTJ (non-SE), it was plagued with crosstalk, so I'm going to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Here was my idea for the process of preserving the discs: Capture in DV -> Remove Pulldown and convert to 23.976p -> Convert to Anamorphic 16:9 DV file -> Render to MPEG-2 & AVC.
