Much appreciated!
Much appreciated!
For those who are curious about the colour correction – you can check my work out here.
The 81 crawl should be able to be swapped in via MultiAVCHD if you’d prefer it.
I haven’t downloaded this set yet but plan to very soon and would prefer to have the '81 crawl. What files (other than the ANH disc) would I need to do this? My apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.
Even after 7 months, I believe THE FORCE AWAKENS still holds up as one of the best SW films yet. What I wouldn’t give for a theatrical re-release with ROGUE ONE. It was the best cinema going experience I’ve ever had – despite the film being letterboxed and on a tiny screen. Only doing IMAX from here on out with SW films.
The ending is still incredible. Curious as to what everyone’s reaction was with the Luke Skywalker reveal? I recall the crowd in the theater being very quiet (and most likely surprised) and not clapping until the credits. All the other returning characters were given a huge reaction.
So there’s the DCP of the first film – are they any HD versions of II and III without the DNR and EE? I was under the impression that there were only low-bitrate TV rips.
Either way, grabbing the proper version right now. Always hated the Blu-ray – even before I knew it was overly processed. When I saw the trilogy in theaters last October, I could easily see how bad the EE and DNR turned out.
This is actually from a broadcast master so that’s a damn good source. Probably the best we’ll ever get.
Wait, really – is this from a 1" tape master? Will have to download this now!
So you’re re-encoding the majority of the movie? What’s the basis for this “color correction?”
I don’t think the resolution of the missing frames is a major issue, considering how short those shots are.
Yes – the whole film is being re-encoded. It’s not as simple as “branching” the two parts together, sadly. Too many missing frames.
I based my colours off the Goodtimes DVD and production stills (colour of shirts, boats, etc). The Blu-ray was overly saturated and tinted blue. Michael Caine’s face and outfit were clear indicators of a botched colour job.
The Goodtimes DVD was not 100% accurate, but it was miles ahead of the faded master used for the Universal DVD. TV spots were also used for references, but only to see if the general look was right. Additionally, I consulted the “Siskel and Ebert” review.
I can post a comparison shortly if anyone would like to check my work.
So – I can render this thing out very soon, just need to finish the colour correction. Considering the Blu-ray was DNR’ed, would preserving the theatrical cut in 720p be acceptable? I could do 1080p, but that would make the missing frames stick out, as their resolution is only slightly about 720p.
I believe Harmy showed that DNR’ed Blus sometimes don’t have a big difference between 1080 and 720.
Thoughts – 720p vs 1080p?
Let me just say as a Thomas fan, I’m really excited about this project! It’s high time the classic series got this kind of treatment! Though I also count seasons 8-11 as part of the classic era, being they still used models and sets (season 12 I don’t count because even though they were still using models and sets, they started adding CGI faces and characters). I just want to point out though, the series has gotten better since Andrew Brenner joined the crew. 😉
Thank you! I’m glad some true Thomas fans have noticed this massive undertaking. I would love to preserve 8-12, but it’s damn near impossible to do right now. Maybe in the future? And yes, Brenner has done a number on revamping the show from a baby’s show to a children’s show.
Just saying, if, IF you were going to include different audio options, I would’ve included all known narrations, but whatever.
I really, really wanted to include the Japanese dub, but I would be pulling my hair out… and that’s a lot of wasted disc space that could be used for the PQ.
Another thing to ask, you corrected/restored scenes like Sir Topham Hatt putting on his hat in Trouble in the Shed and Edward taking Henry’s coaches in Henry’s Special Coal?
I corrected the scene in HENRY’S SPECIAL COAL, but was not aware of the error in TROUBLE IN THE SHED. Will check that out! I don’t want to revise too much, I just want to fix places where the footage just doesn’t sync up or doesn’t use the correct take.
It does, and what little grain is left is further covered up by the terrible compression.
If you look at the video link above (the one comparing the two cuts of REVENGE), I compare the German HDTV and the US iTunes version (which is now the Blu-ray version) and they’re identical. Same scan, same detail, etc. It’s NOT the same scan as the past two DVD releases, though. So either it’s brand new, or something they’ve had since the late 90s.
The Blu-ray forum is also the place where everyone thought the JAWS 2 master was a new scan. Little did they know, and refused to believe, that it was the same master as the 2003 DVD release. Boy were they stumped.
UPDATE: Jordan was able to provide the missing frames and they’re cropped to their OAR so we’re getting very close!

The Bluray is Dnr’ed and from an old master. The German hdtv is supposedly the best one out there as it is from a newer master not shown anywhere else in tge world
The German HDTV is from the same source, just with the alternate footage – all the same scan, etc.
For those who know me, you’re probably aware of my OFF THE CUTTING ROOM FLOOR fan edit of JAWS THE REVENGE, which aimed to reinstate the deleted scenes (in their correct order) present in the AMC cut of JAWS THE REVENGE. This is now finished, and ready for upload. But before I put it on the 'Spleen, I decided to try something else.
On June 14th, 2016, the Blu-ray for JAWS THE REVENGE was released in the United States. The release used the usual “exploding shark” revised ending, but featured the original theatrical ending (although missing a sequence) as a bonus feature, and in 1080p HD!
For those who don’t know the difference between the cuts of the film, check this handy guide out – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iSZ0PTriHA
The problem is, the Blu-ray special feature is missing the theatrical version of “Jake’s demise” which features 3 alternate shots. I am in possession of said frames, but they come from a 720p Deutsch HDTV rip of the theatrical cut (which is incredibly rare to find in HD and OAR) with a channel logo burnt onto the video.
Here are the frames in question - http://imgur.com/a/y9V4s
I have, however, been able to reconstruct the integral pieces (i.e. shark’s demise, pre-dubbed plane sequence, etc), which you can see here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TN44G2TNR18
Other than the missing sequence, the project is virtually complete and in full 1080p. Does anyone perhaps have access to a rip that contains these frames? Now, I could just forget these frames and call it a day - but in the end, it’s not a TRUE theatrical reconstruction without those three shots!
I wanted to include the Ringo Starr’s US dub, but being that it’s incomplete for both seasons 1 and 2, it was hard to preserve it, and the fact that 99% of it is only on VHS.
I have a soft spot for Jaws the Revenge yet its widely regarded as one of the worst movies EVER!! Pffft please I’ve seen worse.
You’re not the only one, pal. Personal favorite.
It looks like all the remastered US episodes were recently added to Amazon Prime:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FYLYOYM?ref_=aiv_dp_season_select
This is exactly what I have been waiting for, although it is my understanding that some of the remastered versions lack audio cues.
Did you use any of this in your edit?
I used a lot of it, but much of Series 1 and Series 2 was out of sync and had drop outs. Fixed 'em all, thankfully.
Not trolling, sadly.
Sorry for the lack of updates. Recently, I acquired all the unreleased narration I needed. This project is virtually complete, but I’m having a few others (and myself) beta watch it to check for errors. 15+ hours to watch!
Series 1: audio synced / US titles added.
Series 2: audio synced / US titles added.
Series 3: audio synced / US titles added / color corrected.
Series 5: audio synced / US titles added.
Series 6: audio synced / US titles added.
Series 7: audio synced / US titles added.
You can see a preview of the Series 2 episode “The Deputation” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpvUuhXUUTU&feature=youtu.be
Thank you all for your patience; this will be hitting the spleen very soon!
Well, she has a line there in the CAM bootleg version, so…
Seconded. There are two different main cam sources with different audio tracks with differences between the two that I’ve noticed. She does say a line in one of them.
The cam videos come from non-English versions of the film, from what I’ve seen. Is the audio a sort of patchwork from multiple sources, or is it a straight rip of the English audio?
Out of the 5 times I saw it I remember no line.
Could someone maybe post a soundbyte of the line? I’ll analyze the centre channel from the Blu-ray and see if there’s anything to be heard.
What does she say? Out of the six times I saw the film in theaters, I never heard anything.
There is another change reported on the German Cinefacts forum:
0:58:11 - 0:58:14
In the theatrical version, the woman (First Order spy) is talking audibly to the large alien. In the BluRay version, she is shown talking, but you can’t hear what she is saying. Is this supposed to be a change that’s specific to the German dub?
I don’t recall hearing her in either version of the English dub, but I could be wrong.
edit: another?
You could never hear her in the theatrical version.
Here’s some more of everything - from IV to VI with the effects applied.
Is it me, or are the shadows inverted? The lights and brights seem to be very flat now. Check the image of Tarkin in DS1 in the first link – also look at Luke’s lightsabre core. They’re flat?
I like it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with simply grading the film(s) to look decent rather than striving for perfection or matching certain references. You’ve gotten rid of a lot of that awful magenta. Though I think it’s still a bit too dark. Not sure if you’ve done anything with the luma/contrast.
When you say 97SE, do you mean you’re actually striving to replace Jabba with the old model and lengthen the Greedo shooting sequence again, as well as the many other little changes? Or just the color timing?
I have done some lighting curve adjustments, but can adjust it further. I have the project settings in 32-bit, but in 8-bit it doesn’t look as dark nor pop as much with the colors.
As for the 97 SE, I was mainly looking to match some of the color timing, but I also want to downgrade the '04 edition to match the original SE – and then do a custom SE from there.
Being that there aren’t any real sources to base the official STAR WARS look on, I decided to take it into MAGIC BULLET’S LOOKS software via Sony Vegas and make something close to what I’ve seen from LEGACY and the DESPECIALIZED editions – while keeping it purely the SE (1997 based).
There are some clear artifacts as you can see by looking at the crawl and the shot in the trash compactor. Other than the occasional issue, it does look pretty good on my end.
Warning: My monitors are not the best calibrated, so let me know if there is an overabundance of any color.
