JasonN's PT FanEdits (Attack of the Federation, Twilight of the Republic, & The Black Knight Rises) (Released) ** Revised V3 Cuts In The Works
Time

Here's a few new updates for my list of cuts/edits of EP2:
- flipped the starfield and opening scene of the film so now that the camera pans down into the scene, just like every other SW film opening
(seriously, Lucas, why the hell didn't you do this? Is film consistancy/continuity truly not an issue to you?)

- removed Anakin's "You've grown more beautiful... for a Senator, I mean" line to Padme when he meets her again after 10 years.
(now Padme comments on how much Anakin has grown, Anakin that she has as well, and she smiles)

- the scene of Anakin talking to Palpatine in his office now ends after Palpatine says "invincible", then transitions to Padme's apartment.
(so now there's no longer any additional lines of Palp say that Anakin's "so gifted" and that "he'll be the greatest of all Jedi"... and Palpatine, being a politician and non-Jedi, knows this how exactly?)

- R2D2 NO LONGER PRESENT IN THE DROID-FACTORY SEQUENCE & DOES NOT SAVE PADME
(Padme's container now drops before the molten fire comes out)

anyone heard of this guy he did something no other fan edit has done, get rid of jar jar literally http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMsew3DMz44

That guy was once a member of this site (his username was Anti-Matter), but I believe he had a falling out or something with other members of the site, so he deleted his posts in his project thread, insulted several people (including Adywan), and ran of to start his own website dedicated to his Prologue project (which has yet to be completed).

Also, he accused me once of plagiarizing the "Anakin beats up Geedo & Meets Qui-Gon" edit that I used in my Attack of the Federation fanedit from his yet-to-materialize project (which was complete BS, because I got the idea for it years ago from the Phantom Editor's commentary track on his PE DVD).

if that scene was to be a closing shot for the PT then maybe enstead of coruscant of the DS, just have the imperial fleet roaming the galaxy, then maybe an exterior shot of the emperor and vader looking out of the window, then just zoom out into stars as if a reverse of the opening of a STAR WARS film. would mirror the ending of ESB perhaps? (except vader doesnt put his arm around palp)

No, the end of the edit still has Obi-Wan taking Luke to Tatooine - that screenshot is from the last scenes of Vader in the film.

That makes a lot of sense!  I don't see how they could construct one that's 3 times the size in much less time; makes no sense that they started it way back when, right?

Sorry been sittin bk too long now and gotta comment on the death star 2 contruction etc. Death star 2 was only a bigger version of DS1. In contruction it takes longer time to create something the first time round due to resources and design problems etc etc etc. makes sense that DS1 took longer than DS2.

First DS = 17-18 years
Second DS = 2-3 years

I must politely ask: "How the hell does that make sense AT ALL?"

White43 on FE hs informed me that there is a typo in one of Watto's subtitles (in the Pod Racer hanger, when he talks to Anakin about Qui-Gon making bets) - this will be corrected for the DVD version.

EDIT: And ther appears to be another typo in one of the Greedo scenes - again, this will be fixed for the DVD.

Judging from your comments, it seems like you are much more of a purist of the PT than I am or will ever be.... which means that you will most definitely hate these fanedits. :/

However, I'll try to answer a few of your questions/comments (and forgive me if some of them are rather harsh, but I can get pretty vocal over some of the story/plot elements of the PT):

I think I'm more fond of (or less hate filled towards) the PT than many members of this board, but I'm very looking forward to watching your works on these. They sound bold and interesting.

I was actually refering to AxiaEuxine's comments (not yours)

FYI, later today I will start uploading the 900mb XVID version of Star Wars: Attack of the Federation to Rapidshare. ;)

Titles
Sorry for being a bit rude here, but what the hell exactly IS a title for a Star Wars movie?

Attack of the Federation
Pod Race
I felt that the original Pod Race went on way too long and had two major flaws: a needless (or pointless) cameo by Jabba the Hutt and the worse, most annoying sports announcer that I've ever heard in a film. Slumberland's cut removed both Jabba and the alien announcer perfectly, which is why I patterned my Pod Race after his (along with my own tweaks/edits to the sequence)

Midiclorians/Virgin Birth/Chosen One Prophecy
Sorry, but I don't agree with you (and before you start up on these changes not being in line with the "myth" aspect of SW, note that I have also studied mythology and Joseph Cambell as well and I still don't agree with Lucas's story choices) - these subplots, as they were presented in the PT, were stupid, ridiculous, and a lot of WTF.

Sidious Mysterious Identity
What's the point of hiding a character's face (to conceal his identity) if you can still tell who it is just from the sound of his voice?

Greedo Fighting Anakin
It's never specified as to what it was the Greedo thought Anakin cheated on - the way it's been edited, the viewer thinks its just a child's game that got out of hand. Personally, I feel this is a much better introduction of Anakin to Qui-Gon rather than the previously mentioned "Jar-Jar gets in deep sh*t with Sebulba and Anakin saves his butt" scene.

Planet Core
I removed this sequence because it was, plainly and simply... retarded.

Elected Queen
Sorry, but a Queen is still a Queen in my book and the "different cultures" arguement would've be more effective if Lucas hadn't chosen to put in Earth-based releationships into SW (step-brother, girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, etc...)

Anakin at Jedi Council
For me, I really like PE cut of the scene because he removed Anakin's cockiness and made the boy seem more afraid (which is what the Council is saying), which ties in well with the following scenes where he is turned down to be trained

Obi-wan training Anakin
Yes, I feel that removing this plotpoint puts Obi-Wan more in line with his original character in the OT (we'll just have to agree to disagree)

Twilight of the Republic   (note that I am still editing EP2 and some of the edits previously listed are no longer a part of the edit - I've updated the list of cuts/edits on the first post of the thread)

Dax in Diner/Yoda Training Padawans
The Dax/Diner scene was terribly-written, served no point to the story (again: just have Zam mention the Kamino System), and was an example of incredibly poor visual design that is too "Earthbound" to be a part of alternative society in a Galaxy far, far away. For the Yoda/Padawans scene, I thought Obi-Wan looked really retarded compared to a little kid (who has an EXTREME cause of redubbing, I might add) - also, because I've added the Obi-Wan/Mace deleted scene back into the film, some of the youngling scene's content becomes redundant and not needed.

Jar-Jar's Voice
The redubing didn't go as well as I had hoped, so in the end I just pitched his voice slightly lower (so it actually sounds like he aged a bit since EP1)

Queen & Senator Amadala
For me, I'm perfectly fine with the concept that Amadala could be a Senator for the Galactic Senate and still be the Queen of Naboo. I mean, Bail Organa is suppose to be a king or some form of royalty on his planet of Alderaan (that is the reason why Leia is a Princess, right?) and he's a Senator, so why can't Padme?

Slave-1 Space Fight
To increase tension/suspense of the action and remove poor dialogue from Obi-Wan, Jango, and Boba.

Watto/Owen Lars/Qui-Gon reference
These edits/cuts are no longer in this fanedit as they were described (due to my decision to include EP1 into the continuity of EP2/EP3, which I hadn't decided on when I posted the cut list) - Watto is still a slave trader and owned Anakin/Shmi in EP1, Owen Lars is introduced by C-3PO as Master Owen (but there is no mention of him being a "step-brother" to Anakin), and Qui-Gon is still Obi-Wan's mentor in these edits.

Shmi Skywalker's Death
We're going to have to seriously disagree here, as I see this subpoint as being ultimately pointless to the PT and Anakin's fall to the Dark Side (which is primarily dealt with in Episode 3). The only major change in it's removal is that Anakin now appears to be a genuinely good (if somewhat impulsive) young man with a kind heart (just as Obi-Wan describes him in the OT), until he betrays the Jedi and joins the Sith in EP3.

Count Dooku
For me, the idea that Count Dooku was an antihero waging a war against the Republic in order to stop a mysterious Sith Lord who's gained control over the Senate was the most brilliant concept that George Lucas NEVER USED - rather than being a villain who was acting out of good intentions and in reality was a good guy (making both him and the Separatists more ambiguous and complex to the plot), Lucas instead just made him into a nondescript "bad guy" and gave the audience no explanation as to why he joined the Sith/Sidious (and before anytime tries to tell me that his backstory was completely explained in some EU novel/comic/game/etc, bear in mind that my only interest in SW is in the films themselves)

Dooku's Lightsaber
Ok, how the heck am I "diminishing" Mace Windu by giving Dooku a similar-colored lightsaber? Do all Jedis have "lightsaber color-coding" based on their rank??? For the record, I chose the color purple it was the only other lightsaber color that I've seen in the movies apart from blue or green and I wanted Dooku's lightsaber to be a different color than either Anakin's or Obi-Wan's in their first duel.

Removal of Yoda's Duel
No, this fight is not "badass".... IT IS THE MOST RIDICULOUS F***ING DESECRATIONS OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE STAR WARS CHARACTERS!!!
Most people bitch about "Greedo Shooting First" as destroying their memories of SW, but for me, this is far, FAR worse: I utterly HATE this sequence from both a CG graphics/effect ("Yes ILM, just turn Yoda into a spazzy looney toon...") and what it said about the character of Yoda - as a Jedi Master who's similar to a chi/zen master, why would Lucas make it so that the way he deals with a character like Dooku is through violence? I can understand why he used a lightsaber during the Order 66 (merely out of self-protection), but to make him arrive there to solely kick Dooku's ass... Lucas, you royally f***ed over my favorite SW character...

The Black Knight Rises

Grevious on Utopa
It was removed because the Separatists are no longer affiliated with or controlled by Darth Sidious and to provide some mystery as to where Grevious and the Droid Army escaped to.

Yoda/Obi-Wan Attack in Temple
Because the fight is ultimately pointless (just have them arrive in the Temple to find the dead Jedi and children) and I DON'T want to see Yoda fighting

Yoda/Sidious Fight
No, no, no, no, NO!!!

Padme's "Losing the Will to Live"
Regardless of how much of a "myth" Lucas tries to make SW into (and how much bullsh*t he tries to feed down our throats about it being one), the fact remains that this plot twist was completely ridiculous and ruined the character of Padme Amadala for me:
"So, because her husband chose to become an evil Sith Lord who slaughtered children (oh, wait, I'm sorry... 'there is still Good in him"...), this woman is going to chose to die even though she still has two young children to love and raise? What a selfish bitch."

Luke's Birth
Part of this choice to not show Leia being born is due to my decision to make a fanedit of Return of the Jedi (and judging from your comments on these PT edits, you'll probably commit suicide from my planned edits of RotJ...), but it's also to preserve some mystery to the story and the fates of certain characters for later Episodes (for those people who actually chose to watch the movies in chronological order)

Birth of Vader
Umm... how about the "NNNNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" moment?

Death Star Construction
Said it before and I'll say it again: the whole idea that it takes the Galactic Empire nearly 17-18 years to complete the first DS yet only took 2-3 years to finish the second DS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO DAMN SENSE. Your whole arguement of "maybe they were building more than one at the end of EP3" is also meaningless because according to "offical" SW canon (ie, what Lucas claims to be the truth) the DS present in Return of the Jedi is the second one that they built AFTER THE FIRST ONE IS DESTROYED!

Well id prefer the planet to be bit bigger and less centered. Death worked because it wasnt clear so you had to focus on it.

In my view, the Death Star only "worked" because seeing it at the end of EP3 was such a mindbendingly "HUH??!" moment that your brain had to mentally shut down in order to comprehend the logic behind it being there:

"So let me get this straight, Mr. Lucas... it takes the Empire 17-18 years in order to complete the first Death Star... yet it only takes them 2-3 years to rebuild it after Luke Skywalker destroys it... yeah George, that's complete bullsh*t."

Though it might be difficult to do justice to the idea I still think shipyards building Star Destroyers would be better (excuse as always the crudity of these mockups):

Ship Yard 1

Ship Yard 2

Personally, I think the planet Coruscant works a lot better visually than using SDs construction sites - the DS "worked" in the original scene (at least, from a visual composition standpoint) because it was the center of attention (literally, since it was in the center of the scene) and it's shape was smoother and more organic than the sharp/mechanical shapes of the Star Destroyer's interior (if the space background featured SDs being built in space like the examples pics you posted, everything in the scene starts to become too similar in shape and is visually cluttered)

About halfway done on compositing the Death Star out of the final shots of EP3 - the masking on Vader needs to be further refined and I need to remove the DS out of the two opening shots (where the deck officers on the lower level of the command bridge), but I think it's turning out rather well:

Vader-Emperor-Coruscant

Also, for my Twilight of the Republic edit (EP2) I've decided to stick to my original instincts on Yoda, so I WILL REMOVE Yoda from the final duel at the end of the film (so now it's just a lightsaber duel between Dooku and Obi-Wan/Anakin).

Had to fix a scene transition in EP3, so I took the time to look over the edit again in case there were any other major/minor changes that I wanted to do before I call the fanedit "truly completed". And there is one element at the end of the film that I want to change:

I'm going to try and remove the Death Star construction from the final Vader/Emperor scenes. ;)

So, it turns out that I'm not as done with my EP1 edit as I thought.

In watching the edit last night, I noticed a scene which somehow just seemed "off", but I couldn't figure out why that was - it was the scene after the Pod Race where Qui-Gon brings the parts back to the ship, he says he's going back for Anakin, and Obi-Wan makes the comment of "picking up another pathetic lifeform". It wasn't until I closely examined the scene that I figured out what was wrong: Lucas and his editors flipped the footage horizontally so that the left side becomes the right side (or the right side becomes the left side) and LEFT IT IN THE FINAL FILM!

You can see this in the affected scenes in:
- the sun/lighting is facing the wrong direction
- Obi-Wan's "apprentice braid" is on the left side when it should be on the right side
- Qui-Gon's pack is on the right side when it should be on the left
- the pilot/attendent enters from the left side of the screen when he should have entered from the right side

So I've now "re-flipped" the shots back to the correct version and you can now see how the scene was intended to be in my finished fanedit. :)

To give a visual example of what I'm talking about, here's a preview:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WORC8cpvr3o

Scene 1 is the original version as seen in the theatrical and DVD version of SW: Episode 1.
Scene 2 is the re-flipped, corrected version that appears in my fanedit.

In your removing of the Yoda it begs the question why leave Obi-Wan and Anakin alive?

Because Dooku is still a Jedi in these edits (need to rotoscope his lightsaber into a different color in that last preview) and he would not kill other Jedis without serious cause (he just wants to escape the planet, so wounding Obi-Wan and Anakin enough to not no longer pose a threat is enough for him)

And now I'm back on the fence as to whether or not Yoda should confront Dooku in a Force duel at the end of Twlight of the Republic (EP2).

On one hand, part of me doesn't want to see Yoda at all in the climax because the final battle should kinda belong to Obi-Wan and Anakin, whom both lose out to the more experienced Dooku (who then escapes the planet) and I really, utterly HATE the Yoda/Dooku lightsaber duel.

On the other hand, it's also the only real time in these Prequel edits where we could see a glimpse of how powerful Yoda is with the Force (since the only action scene with Yoda in Black Knight Rises is now when he defends himself against the clone troopers).

This is just a quick rough test of what my version of the Dooku/Yoda "Force duel" would look like (and if I do end up including this version into the fanedit, Dooku's lightsaber would be rotoscoped out of his hand for the last few scenes):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSsnxnQiC-4

For a contrast, here is my other version of the final scene where Yoda doesn't fight Dooku at all:
