Beatles Remastered Albums Due in September
Time

I read in I think it was USA Today about these.  I think the people doing the remastering work will take good care of these albums.  In the article it has a quote from one of the main guys working on it and he said that the only thing they are using in processing the songs is a slight use of limiting to bring them up to a slightly higher volume because a lot of the tapes they worked with were noticeably too quiet.  He said they are aware of how people see that kind of stuff on remasters but they were very careful about how doing it affects dynamics and they wanted to preserve the original dynamics of the sound.

So yeah...here's to hoping we get the definitive copies of these classics.

R.I.P. Michael Crichton
Time

Damnit....He was one of the first authors I ever really got into.  Like many people, Jurassic Park was my introduction to him.  I was maybe 8 when I first read it as I'd only then heard that my favorite movie of the time (6 years old when I saw JP in theaters...god I loved dinosaurs so much) was based on a book.  And not just any book then, a 300 pager about dinosaurs that somehow adults liked to read.  I couldn't fully grasp everything that went on in the book but still enjoyed it immensely and my reward was a newfound interest in literature outside of kid-oriented movie tie-ins and whatever was in those Scholastic book order things they handed out at school.

I was a few years older when I read Lost World and Congo and when I finally was able to conclude that most of the time the book was way better than the movie (tho I still enjoy both films).  Since then I've read Adromeda Strain, Timeline and Sphere but haven't picked a new one of his up since high school cuz I re-read most of those.  The man was truly an excellent author in our time.

As for Westworld, I've never seen it but I fully intend to give it a go soon.

RIP STAN WINSTON
Time
I remember hearing his name a lot around when Jurassic Park was coming out. I was 7 years old at the time and hardcore into dinosaurs and this dino-masterpiece just happens to get released. It was toys, books (was too young for the original book tho) and TV specials at all times and I learned about Stan and the groundbreaking stuff for JP. His name pretty much became synonymous with guaranteed excellent effects in my book...as well as so many others I'd guess.

This sucks tho. He still could have made awesome and original effects for 10-15 years. Damn diseases.

Lucas to sue Star Wars designer
Time
Jesus Christ....

If he designed them and everyone knows it...then they are HIS designs....not Lucas'. If he signed a contract saying after he gets paid they belong to Lucas or Fox or something....then he'll just have to deal. Then again, I'm not exactly sure how shit works in the copyright world because Lucas technically didn't design most of the stuff we see in the movies.

The Power Of The Dark Crystal (The Dark Crystal sequel)
Time
The first was one of my favorite movies growing up. It was just super weird, mysterious, and slightly darker compared to other stuff I saw when I was like....7. Even to this day I'll pop it in every so often and enjoy the overall fantastic oddness of the whole movie.

I'm glad as hell they are using puppets. I trust that they will put the CG backdrops and whatnot in the hands of people that actually give a damn about the first movie and keep the feel similar.

And the soundtrack is nothing short of fangasmic.

Brett Favre Rides into the Sunset
Time
^that was great.

As a lifelong fan and Green Bay (well, Ashwaubenon...the true grounds of Lambeau) I was pretty stunned but not overly WTF about it. It's been a tease every year since around 2001 that he might be done. He's really the only quarterback I've watched since I got into football when I was like....6. It's gonna be weird seeing someone else helm the team.

So apparently Christiansen can't act...
Time
I've seen Jumper, Shattered Glass and Awake (going off the voice work, not much of him doing anything in the movie) and I've come to the conclusion that his SW work is his worst but he's by no means gonna win any awards as of now. I've not given up completely on him though. He's young and still capable of pulling at least one amazing (or at least really good) performance off.

Where as Natalie Portman has made it past being known just for Star Wars (like Harrison Ford), I think Hayden Christiansen might turn out like most other prominent actors in SW movies...if they weren't famous before them, they'll mostly be remembered almost soley by them with a couple movies around that period working off that popularity. Except the prequels and the acting in them pretty much sucked so they won't be remembered as kindly.

The Darth Vader theme
Time

First off, the implication that John Williams has any ego is ...well... laughable. He is perhaps the most humble man in hollywood and far more humble than he needs to be. So no, his ego did NOT get in the way.

As for why it wasn't in A New Hope, I'm sure we all know that the ANH was made to be a stand alone film and no intention of continuing the series was known when the first film was made.

As such, when williams composed the music, he composed it in a lite motif style, but did not focus a lot on how to develop themes. In fact, there's an interview with him for Episode I where he says there was almost NO motivic development in the OT because it simply wasn't something they planned for.

As such, Episode IV has a "bad guy theme" but it's never used again in the series.

Why no Vader's theme was inserted I think is because it's the first film to be re-released as a special edition. If they did a LOT to it and added new music and such, I think Fans would have been put off right from the bat. (Notice that most of the changes are in the other two releases which came months latter).

So I think the real issue is that the prequels were started with the intent on having motivic development, but when Episode I's final battle was re-edited some 5 times, and when Williams could no longer be called upon to rescore it, they simply and barbarically ripped his music apart. He entered the project hoping to use it as a great exercise in motivic development and musical literature. Look at the amount of music written for Episode I! It's nearly 3 hours!

Then look at Episode II... it's less than a single CD's worth of music.

Episode II suffered because Williams was very disenchanted and no longer saw the project as what he was hoping it would be and probably didn't feel the need to compose music that would simply be ripped apart (which he is actually quoted as saying he would not write music for the final battle of Episode II probably for this reason... and the fact that he only ever composes music for actual film. If the Video hasn't been presented to him, he won't compose to it. That's how we know that Jedi originally had a longer introduction and that the scene of Luke Building the Lightsaber exists because williams wrote music for it).

By Episode III, Williams and Lucas must have sat down and talked it out. Certain decisions were made to allow for tracked music into Episode III, but it was pre-planned rather than something they'd do behind Williams back. The score's strength is much stronger because Williams felt more motivated to do it and he wrote a lot more material.

I tell you all this becuase the idea of even having Motifs that develop was something new to the prequels, and really only starts in Episode I but is crushed almost right after because of these events. Williams wrote Anakins theme with the intent of having some development, but because of what happened, never truly used it to the extent he could have.

Episode III did have some development of themes but Episode II almost had none.

So with that being said, asking why Episode IV didn't have the music from Empire included... the simplest answer is it wouldn't have fit the film and Lucas probably didn't like the idea at all.

I know that personally, I always saw Vader in ANH as weak. He was weaker than he was in Empire. After the fall of the Death star and the death of the one "holding [his] leash," Tarkin, I felt that he became a more prominent and stronger character; more free and more important as his relationship with Luke and Leia begins to develop and the Emperor becomes more involved.

I think that because of this, not having a real theme for Vader until then works fine, and having the Imperial Theme in ANH works fine as it is although Adwyns edit of ANH "Star Wars Revisited" I noticed DOES include some tidbits of score from Empire so perhaps you should keep an eye on that edit

You know shit.....a lot of shit. Good shit though.
