Info Wanted: Question about 1980 uncut Empire
Time
A snippet from a new article over at T-Bone's site:

As a bonus, I'm including another question/answer that briefly mentions Mike Matessino. It's from the Cut Scenes Yahoo! Group I'm a member of. This one was answered by Mike Coate from widescreenreview.com:
Q: Anyone know of any differences in the opening day versions of ESB or
RotJ?

A: Many differences, picture and sound, between 70mm and 35mm versions inn TESB. Some of the transitional wipes are different (wipe vs. straight cut, etc.)... When Luke falls to the snow after tossing the grenades into the Imperial Walker, the background Scout Walker element was recomposited for the 35mm version... A few extra shots and extra line of dialogue in final scene... Medical Center scene has a closeup of Luke in the tank in the 70mm version and a long shot of other characters watching Luke in 35mm version.... there are others... Extensively documented by Mike Matessino in FILM SCORE MONTHLY magazine (Jan/Feb 1997).

I am now trying to locate this article. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Info Wanted: Question about 1980 uncut Empire
Time
During my research for 'Building Empire' I came across several mentions that the 70mm version was different to the generally released version. Whilst not as different as the version mention by this threads author, there are some differences.

"Also of interest to some may be that the 70mm prints of "The Empire Strikes Back" differed from the 35mm version in that some editing differences, additional shots, alternate takes, and extra dialogue can be detected through a comparison of the two versions. It is understood that when the movie was considered "finished," the elements were turned over to the lab and sound facilities so the desired 70mm print order could be prepared. The filmmakers, however, elected to "un-finish" the movie and make a few, albeit subtle, changes that, considering the expense and time involved in re-striking and and/or re-sounding 70mm prints, were reflected only in the film's 35mm prints. There is a bit of irony in all of this trivia: the majority of the public and media who saw the movie in its first month of release saw the "less complete" version."

At the time I hit a brick wall in my research, but I may soon be able to shed some more light on this issue.

I will soon investige this fully.

Right, here's the situation:

- There is now some additional effects work to do. Estimate 2 to 3 weeks.
- QC copies without effects work will go out as soon as possible.
- I have a lot of real work on at the moment (some last minute) and I must commit my time to that.

I will avoid posting here for a while, I don't want to get your hopes up prematurely again. I get a little excited each time I think I'm near the end.

Thanks for your patience.

There will be a DL version (there won't be any cash or the moon on a stick though).

There won't however be any DVD-ROM content. Unless I get some completed cover and disc art before I ship the discs out.

This thing is taking over my life and to be honest at this time of year there is so much more to be done.

Thanks for your continued support and patience though. I have a day this week to get it as near to completion as possible.

My PM inbox is full so I am unable to reply to individuals, sorry. Though here are some answers to some of your questions:

- I didn't end up using the Wonder Column CD directly, only for research purposes. No, it won't be included on the DVD. I got it on ebay, so that's the best place to look.

- 'Returning to Jedi' is not finished yet. I am away from home until the 2nd Jan 07, but will work hard to get it released asap.

- I will be making an initial 20 or so copies of 'Returning to Jedi' and sending them out to those that have helped during the process of making it. I will then pass it to the usual channels to get a torrent up and running. I may even make it available in Xvid segments (though that might be later) or on youtube.

- I will not accept any money. Please read the FAQ on page 1 of this thread before asking me any questions.

- The DVD should be single layer compressed using DVD2oneX.

- No official cover/disc art has been completed. I am still waiting until I see my favourite design.

Thanks, and a Happy New Year to you all!
JD

Ell, very cool cover. Where is that poster art from, I don't think I have ever seen it before?

I will be sending out 20 copies of 'RTJ' when it's done, you will be one of them Ell.

The bad news is, it's going to be delayed slightly (again). I am now away from home on my Christmas break and will not be home until the 5th January 2007. I will beaver away in that second week and get the discs out.

Rest assured, as soon as I am able, I will be getting it finished. In the meantime, if you have some spare time, I would love to see some covers and disc art.

Anyone know who's list this is? I tried contacting him but got a bounce back.

Here

He has a copy of something I searched high and low for, 'The Risk Business'. It's a BBC doco that visits the ESB set and has some great shots in it. I would still love to get a copy somehow. Can any of our German friends here translate anything that might be of use to finding this person?

Thanks

Ok well I have encoded the whole thing. Now only one problem... I need a recommendation on which Dual Layer DVD-R to use please. Anyone in the UK found a good brand?

In the meantime for the QC Team I am compressing the DVD to a standard single layer disc using DVD2oneX. I hope it works! So your job is to spot mistakes and errors rather than judge the quality of pictures. Thanks!

Agreed! I haven't watched them since ROTS was in the cinema. It is all slowly fading from memory.

So, I have decided to create a v.0.5 disc for my QC group (if you guys are still willing?) to look over. In
the meantime I will try to overcome the corruption problem when I use that
particular filter.

So in the next 3 days I hope to be sending out discs to:

Sluggo
meedermow
THX
Rebel11_38

This discs are not to be distributied any further, so please don't ask them to do so!

If you guys can look over the DVD for errors and speeling mistooks. Once again, any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Guess what I am going to ask for now.. that's right, could you PM your addresses to me (saves me delving into old emails!)

For the rest of you, I've posted a few photos to wet your appetite.
