Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

@Doctor M, that's some bizzare interlacing. I keep coming up with theories, but none of them quite fit. I'll see for myself pretty soon, maybe I can get a clue to the cause. Probably won't help get a solution, but the cause is nagging me.

@Gregbert007,
Edit: Oh. Right. Duh. Sorry about that. Yeah, see Ron's post below.

Info & Info Wanted: Star Trek Theatrical versions - question

Yeah!

Sorry, I've been too busy to participate much, lately.

They goofed on the TMP movie, the Director's Edition was the only dvd. Do you have the link to the article? I gave up trying to dig it up.
As I see they are currently re-designing the whole website, that can be the problem. But I probably still have somewhere the articles (I downloaded them maybe a year ago - oops, it's actually 2 years ago now ), so if you want them, I can search for them.

Nah, it's not important, if it would be a chore for you to search out.

EDIT: By the way, I was searching out threads, for the next reply, and I noticed you asked about "The Cage", long long ago. It was released on DVD. Both the color and the color/B&W versions are on the last volume of the 2-episode-per-disc DVD set. Volume 40. I'm pretty sure its in the 3rd Season Box Set, too.

You are slightly right, it was a loooooooooooooooooooooong time ago, but I was actually searching for the complete show aired between season 1 and season 2 of the Next Generation, it had some behind-the-scenes footage plus a hybrid B&W/color version of The Cage, I've seen it only once on SAT 1 and it's title backtranslated from german was something like From one generation to another, it was hosted by Patrick Stewart. Do you know if it was released on some "normal" format ? (NOT laserdisc or something similar, laserdisc is something completely unknown in this part of Europe).
Also, the original series was never released here, and I don't want to buy it from some other country, because it would have no (usable) subtitles and my english is not that good (as you probably noticed from my posts )

I thought there was a VHS, of that special, but I don't find a copy on Ebay or Half. I don't know if it was ever released in PAL format.

According to Star Trek Discs it was on Laserdisc, but only in a Japanese box set.

Yeah, I know, you don't want laserdisc, but it needs to be preserved to dvd, so, maybe, someday... But the Laserdisc would have burned-in subtitles. If a guy could find the LD and also the VHS, then a VHS capture could be used to replace the subtitles (using a compositor). At the very least, the episode footage could be taken from the DVD.

I don't remember noticing any innacuracies in your English. Then again, many people who only speak English, don't write it very well, so any errors might not stand out.

The DVD's have the full-color version, along with the color+B&W version.

Seems the 2-episodes-per-volume TOS were only released in NTSC. You may not want to pay for an entire box-set for one episode, but I seem to recall someone mentioning that the PAL TOS had subtitles for many different languages. Amazon.co.uk only lists English, but they never seem bother to mention other languages. Maybe you could check amazon.de?

You mean the X-Mas as in Futurama? Heh. Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.
Well, that's funny, I was actually watching that episode of Futurama the day you wrote this

Happy New Year friends.

Har. It was that time of year, but still a pretty good coincidence.

I believe the 2-disc set of the director's cut actually includes the original versions of scenes as bonus amterial on disc two. Assuming all of it's on there, it shouldn't be hard to edit together.

Yes, you're right. That's exactly what I was planning to do, that's why I have asked the question if anybody else did it allready (I don't want to waste my time with creating something what allready exists).

Well, there's still the extended version that needs to be recreated or captured.

I seem to remember reading that there was a line of dialouge not present on the First Contact DVD that was heard in the theatre, the line was from Kelsey Grammer as Captain Bateson of the USS Bozeman responding to Picard's order of attack, this was widely regarded as not being true until the line turned up in the HD version.

This can be the truth, I have a DVD with the theatrical version of "First Contact" and it is approx. one minute shorter then the 2disc version. But inclusion of only one line can not be responseable for an extra minute, can it ?

I said that in another thread, but then I couldn't find the line on the HD. Powerdvd remembered where I'd compared the dvd to the Hd... I can't explain it. I can't think of any other source than the HD.

Is your Theatrical Version from an unofficial source? That would be interesting.

I will be running a PIF of the version that CW does once I get a copy of it. If anyone wants to join in on the chain, let me know after I get the dvd.

I guess with "PIF" you don't mean the windows shortcut for dos programs Is it the system "I'll send you it for free if you send it for free to someone else" ? If yes, I would be interested.

PAL version is done.

Heh ? Did I miss something ? Or better said : how can I get a copy ?

Faustus would be the guy to ask, in Europe. But you probably already know that.

Here's a tip I haven't seen mentioned...

When I was ripping an extras disc, with DVD-Decrypter, selecting "demux", each time, it got to be quite a pain in the ol' carpel tunnel.

So I poked around and found you can set demux as the default.

Tools -> Settings -> Stream Processing Tab

Put an asterisk in the "demux" box.

(IIRC, you have to clear an asterisk from another box).

It's been a while, but I know DVD-Decrypter forgets one of the defaults, every so often, and I think that's the one. So you have to check up on it, each time. But that's still less clicking than setting it for every fraking one.

By golly, I was going to put this tip into ADM's thread, but forgot. Saved me some carpal tunnel syndrome when ripping extras discs:

Change the default to Demux:

Tools -> Settings -> Stream Processing Tab

Put an asterisk in the demux box.

(IIRC, you have an asterisk to clear in one of the others).

It's been a while since I ripped, but I think that's the option that it forgets to obey, every so often. So you have to check to make sure.

Daredevil - Spence (Released)
Time
I got this the other day. I skipped around, through it, last night, and found several of the edits. Very clean, seamless, if I didn't have the cheat sheet I'd be thinking "I don't remember this scene moving along this well." I caught one of the flashbacks, too. It's a real improvement.

It's going up in the newsgroups, now - a.b.dvd & a.b.dvd5, with the nzb also in a.b.nzb.

I am slowly posting this to the newsgroups - a.b.dvd, a.b.dvd5, and the nzb is also crossposted to a.b.nzb.

I love Darksaber's and Kracker's covers! (I, too, need a decent borderless printer). I added a Dvd-rom folder & stuck 'em in there.

I'm looking forward to watching it. If they stop having new tv shows for a year, or so, I think I'll catch up.

@Cassius76: Of course, I should've thought of that. My client doesn't q them up, it's 1 instance per torrent, I might switch.

@Boon: Awesome!

@Sojourn: Their server is back up. I'm seeding a little bit, but I'll have to stop soon, to post to the newsgroups.

I was originally going to have 24 posted by now, but the torrenting dragged on, and I changed my upload list. It should be next, between Spence's Spiderman and a certain Superman edit.

WooHoo! I was hoping you'd be posting to Usenet!

Here's a pretty good PowerPost Tutorial with screenshots. If I recall, it's the one that got me started.

I've seen problems with par sets generated by PowerPost, so it's better to make the set with Quickpar.

Also, since you wouldn't be posting FTD's releases , it would be better to post the nzb to a.b.nzb.

The .nfo should come first, but A&A 11b wants to put it last, unless I click "Sort .PXX" under the File Order tab.

You should put your handle in, instead of using the default of PowerPost-blahblahblah. (I hate seeing 20 or 30 guys named A&APowerPost). Thats "nickname" in the headers tab.

Edit: LOL! Ya beat me Arnie.

I'm throwing 5 kBs at it, all I can spare at the moment. If anyone else can help out...

I started a few hours ago, and my software saw another seed & 3 more peers, with a total speed of 64 kBs. Now I'm seeing 1 peer & no seeds, but 22 kBs, so there's someone else there (BitTornado often misses other seeds, when I'm complete.

This is probably the last time I'll have it on the hard drive, folks. So if you need it, this might be a good time. But I'm going to put it on the newsgroups one of these old days.

Info: Re-Emergence of Star Wars on USENET
Time
Star Wars: Return of the Newsgroups!

(A boring dissertation).

Many ISPs offer newsgroups (check their faqs for "Usenet") - but they usually fall into 3 catagories :
1) Run their own servers, which have lots of incomplete parts & probably missing groups.
2) Give their users some number of Gigs from a premium newsserver. (Usually 1 Gig / month - not enough to get you anywhere).
3) Give their users access to a crappy sub-premium newsserver (missing groups, missing parts, erratic performance).

Roadrunner cable used to do #1, pretty well, dunno if they still do. And they did it fast. Made me want to move to their region.

In the #1 & #3 cases, you'd pay for a limited account on a good server, and get the missing pieces from there. Astraweb is a favorite.

Then of course, there's the ISPs that don't give you any.

Newshosting is a great server for $10 a month, unlimited gigs. About 30 or 40 days retention, last I checked. A month of Easynews, at $10 a month for several Gigs (10?) (and the unused Gigs roll over) is a great way to learn the lay of the land - because they have a web server. Giganews holds onto stuff for about 90 days (if you have a good memory for what you want), but unlimited is closer to $25.

The alternatives?

A new alternative to newsgroups is Rapidshare, where fanedits & stuff are currently going up at a great pace. If that trend keeps expanding, it'll really be something. That's about $9 or 9 Pounds, I forget. I'm gonna go on there for a month or three.

And there's trading. Maybe $10 a month postage...

Torrents are great, if you have plenty of upload bandwidth. Perfect for folks living at college - their internet is free, $10 a month is hard to justify, and the upload is insanely fast. Youth at home, with little or no income, favor the torrent thing too. And, heck, anyone with a budget and some patience. (I have a budget, but no patience).

But for folks paying $50 a month for broadband, (on top of their Cable/Sattelite bill), and only getting 30 or 40 kBs upload, versus their several-100's kBs download, another $10 for newsgroups can sound pretty attractive...

Why newsgroups?

There's tons of almost everything on the newsgroups. But it's only good for fanedits/preservations if people upload the goodies there... which brings us back to the topic. Segaflip used to post a dvd a day. Mostly SW. Life was good. Sigh.

We've still got posters for SW, and I'm starting up with the non-SW fanedits (many of which I'll get at Rapidshare). But it's still pretty thin in the SW group, compared to what we were used to.

Of course a whole lot of SW was movie LD transfers, which aren't in as much demand as before the GOUT (until X0 comes out). New stuff is coming in, but most of the SW would be reposts. But hey, it's been long enough that reposts would be welcomed. (I wont do reposts until I run out of new stuff. But if a new SW comes my way, I'll be happy to post it).

Thanks to MoveAlong, I just got Puggo's SW and ESB in an hour, instead of 3 or 20 days. And I didn't have to upload a thing. I love newsgroups! (I upload voluntarily, but I'm uploading something different each time, unlike when I upload to torrents).

24 The Game - Cut Scenes Fan Edit (by daveytod) (Released)

@Kaine23: The aforementioned Rapidshare links and Mutantmovies, et. al., info pages now proclaim "PAL".
If an NTSC version, or conversion, is made, I'll get you a copy, if you need me to. (You might have to remind me). Thanks for seeding this, in spite of your dissapointment with the format.

@All : I'm gonna do some torrenting for a day or two, then post this to the newsgroups.

I need to simplify for a short time, anyhow. Normally, usenet posting takes very little of my time (winrar & quickpar on another computer, network to an antique for powerpost). The nfo requires more thought than the rest of it. But I've got some (tech-related) going on that would get in the way.

@Davyetod: Meanwhile, I'll watch this bad boy on my computer, so I can give my thoughts. I'm itching to see it, I'm gonna dig it.

I *will* find a set-top that'll play PAL, since I have a fair amount of PAL material, but for now, it's via the computer. We NTSC-landers get screwed on SD picture quality (tho' we get normal speed audio, in most cases), and given our proximity to certain powers-that-be, ahem, we have a little tougher time with some technical, and other, barriers.

This stuff is fun for me (unless its my machine, then I'm frustrated, going in). Hope it helps.

Computer-related forums (or newsgroups, which aren't as as useful, for it, as they used to be) can be wierd. It's hard to predict when they'll just ingore you, or why. Don't wanna tack your problem to the end of a solved thread, though - your problem is gonna be different, and they've already finished with the thread anyway. But, yeah, sometimes you won't get helped, no matter what, and meanwhile they'll swarm all over the guy next to you.

What you want is a single bios beep, right at the beginning. No beep means the motherboard ain't working (might not be permenant). Multiple beeps mean something is up, but you can probably fix it. Helps if you can google up a chart for that BIOS's beeps.

Since you're in the troubleshooting phase, it's best (data safety) to leave the drives-with-data out of the loop (unless all the data is backed up). On the other hand, if you fix a problem elsewhere, you could put everything together and just try it.

A SATA->IDE adapter, that makes sense. But it's also a potential point-of-failure, so that's another reason to leave the IDE's off for now. Also, that buisness about setting the IDE drives to master - manufacturer's like to give simple, non-threatening instructions that sound like no-compromise, but which may or may not have a hard reason behind them. If you dug into their faqs, you might find there's a lot of leeway, and it depends on the partiiculars. In any case, if you have a WD alone on its cable, you have to set it as single, or things will get screwy - and the adapter is probably fine with having a single set as single.

I don't normally buy hardware for people, so I'm not that kind of go-to guy. But us go-to guys have a tough time keeping up. Things get past us. So no reflection on him. A single-core would be in heaven with a 400W.

Of course, if the boot is freezing when the BIOS is checking the controller circuitry (long before it checks the drives), then maybe it could happen before the video bios announces itself... (I dunno). In that case it could be, for example, a bad motherboard, low power, or the wrong thing connected to the controller.

Anyway, you've got a lot of stuff to check. Might hit it on our first round of suggestions.

1) That's the way to go on the drives. You might have more than one problem, of course. (Do It Yourself is ever so much fun. )

2) Yes, SATA and IDE need separate controllers. (Unless someone came up with a dual controller) I haven't done SATA, yet, but I wouldn't think they'd have the same connectors. (If they do, then it would be an obvious ploy to make tech support rich. ). Check your manual for a built-in SATA controller on the motherboard.

3) You've got one of those boot analyzer dealiebobbers that plug into a slot? It may not be 100% accurate, in all cases. I wish I had one, though.

4) The video is what bothers me. The video card's bios info should pop onto the screen before the computer bios info, and both should happen before the drives are paid any attention to. (Drives may spin up, maybe click, as soon as the power comes on, but they won't get accessed before the screen lights up, assuming the video is right).

5) But you don't mention the bios beeping. If the video card isn't seated, then you should get beeping early in the boot.

6) See if your dinky little case speaker is connected to the motherboard - its a good diagnostic tool. You need to hear any BIOS beeps.

7) The video card's fan has no relation, whatsoever, to the video card's functionality. They are separate in every way. Sorry, that wasn't supposed to sound harsh.

8) Does the board have a built-in video? If so, try running off of that. Also check your manual. And, in that case, see if you have to change a jumper in order to go from built-in to a video card (I'd think it'd be automatic, but ya never know). You might need to go into "CMOS" (BIOS) setup to change video. Which would be hard to do if you have no video. In that case you'd boot to the hypothetical built-in, go into setup, and change).

9) If you don't have a built-in video, then try another video card.

10) Are you sure your monitor didn't pick that moment to die - just to eff with you?

11) What's your Power Supply? A P4, and all but the oldest Athlons take a lot of juice. Plus, those CPUs load the +12V line - they used to run on the +5 line, and power supplies are still built off of the old design that pumps out a lot of +5. So you need a mofo of a Power Supply to run a modern CPU, more than one hard drive, and a decent video card. A Dual-Core CPU probably draws close to twice as much...

So you may be starved for power.

I'm seeing 550W~600W recommendations. Keep in mind that it ain't the total wattage of the PS, it's the amps it'll deliver on the +12V.

12) Going to one hard drive at a time & built-in video would be the best way to start, for diagnostic and power-supply reasons. In fact, if you leave off the hard drive & boot to floppy, to see if you get video... Also yank the sound card, and any other fluff.

13) Note: If you have a Western Digital, make sure to jumper it for Single, if you run it by itself. Most/all other brands use one jumper setting for single or master.

14) If you can get video, and can get into the BIOS Setup screen, then see if it'll show you voltages. You want +/- 5% on all lines. If you don't get that at any stage up to fully loaded, then look for another power supply.

PSYCHO_DAYV, sorry to hear about the accident, I hope it wasn't a bad one. It's got to be rough on a little kid's nerves, for a while. I'm glad everyone's ok. Stay alert for any problems that anyone might have in the next few days. Sometimes that stuff sneaks up on a person. Don't anyone try tough it out, go back to the doctor, if something new shows up. I've had friends & relatives have stuff show up later. Er... don't mean to worry you. (I'm sure the doc already lectured you, but, you know).
