George Lucas's Sequel Trilogy
Time

I thought he said after Indiana Jones IV Lucasfilm was moving from the silver screen into television. This was before streaming was even a thing.

George Lucas had this tv series that the working title was called Star Wars Underworld. Did he really intend to do Star Wars sequels or Indiana Jones V. Because i just don’t see it. A couple of pages of notes isn’t a screenplay. He had hundreds of hours of scripts for that unmade tv series.

I would like to see his treatments be fleshed out, that was what i wrongly thought Michael Arndt was doing before the filming of 7 commenced.

George says Disney didn’t use any of his treatment or story and we have to take him at his word i guess.

A Long Time Ago... - Share Your Star Wars Story
Time

I would like to see new restoration prints someday of the OOT, but until then i have 4K77 and 4K83.

As for the prequels and the Disney movies if other people enjoy them who am i to deny them. I’ve at least mellowed some what on Phantom Menace. I’ve never really enjoyed Attack of the Clones though, and my liking for Revenge of the Sith has been at least cut in half since the last time i watched it.

Still would like to see Star Wars 77 and Empire 1980 on the big screen. Looks like its something i will never experience. Wonder if i’ll live long enough for episodes 10, 11 and 12 to happen.

Seeing Return of the Jedi in 1985 was a experience i’ve never come close to again, except for Return of the King in 2003.

I got all 11 Star Wars movie novels for Christmas. Do the Prequel and Original Trilogy novelisations have additional content in them that the movies do not have?
Time

Star Wars opens talking about the old republic and how the emperor came to power. It mentions the journal of the Whills. But there isn’t really all that much in expanded material beyond Luke and his friends on Tatooine.

Empire i i think might have an extended scene but its pretty much a standard novelization of the screenplay.

ROTJ has an extended chat with Ben and Luke. That is now completely non canon because Ben and Owen are no longer brothers in canon.

Phantom Menace has deleted scenes.

Attack of the Clones has deleted scenes.

Revenge of the Sith is written from Anakin’s POV. Its the movie but better.

The Disney movies don’t really have much more material beyond the movie , Force Awakens has a scene of Leia in the New Republic and her aide the one who gets vaporized later when Starkiller base fires.

Last Jedi has more Luke and Leia and Han Solo’s funeral. ROS is pretty much the film except for the reveal that Palpatine is not only Rey’s grandfather but father.

The most expanded versions of Star Wars and Empire are actually the Radio Dramas by Brian Daley.

Discussion: What Star Wars art or posters do you have on your wall? (or would you like?)
Time

I have the episode II teaser poster and a repro of Star Wars, the one where Luke points his blaster.

One of the posters i like is kind of weird though. Its a repro of Revenge of the Jedi but says Return of the Jedi. But its the same Struzan art. I also think i have a Boris Vallejo poster somewhere that is also a repro.

What 'a Star Wars Story' / anthology / spinoff film would you like to see?
Time

I wouldn’t mind a Leia film or show. Its hard to replace Carrie though its quite impossible. I feel bad for what ever actress has to step into this role and will never be able to exist in the same space in people’s minds as Leia did in Star Wars 77. On the other hand i would prefer a new actor/actress instead of cgi.

I watched Cry Macho. It was just okay. It wasn’t anything grand and it is far from Eastwood’s best. But i couldn’t hate it because he is such a legend.

But it wasn’t a tenth as good as The Mule, or Gran Torino.

I also watched both versions of Dune. The 2021 was very good and it ended just as things got interesting. But it was all setup. The 1984 was bizarre, wooden acting/ no charisma for Paul Atreides. It was like two separate movies jumbled together. Still would like to see the version the director wanted. I noticed Chani was played by Sean Young, but if i blinked i wouldn’t have noticed her because she is barely in the movie.

I did notice something i never noticed before though that Paul Atreides was ripped off for Anakin Skywalker, its even more apparent reading the novel. Especially the prequel version of Anakin being the chosen one/savior.

The Wheel of Time
Time

I’m loving both Foundation and The Wheel of Time. But no Foundation is very much not faithful to the books. Its still more faithful than I, Robot with Will Smith which has 0% to do with the book.

The Shannara TV show was alright but they didn’t get the numbers they needed to keep the show running. Also not faithful except in spirit to the books. Most things aren’t adapted faithfully that includes the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. Adaptation is very much creating something anew for a different medium.

Sometimes they stray too far from the source like the last seasons of GOT.

What do you think is the most underrated Star Wars story?
Time

I’ve always had sort of a soft spot for Phantom Menace. I like the underwater city, the pod race and the duel of the fates. I liked Obi Wan. I liked Qui Gon, i didn’t hate Anakin in it like other people did. I liked Padme leading her people in secret as her handmaiden. I didn’t mind the slapstick of Jar Jar or him playing the fool/sidekick.

For me its the most enjoyable of the prequels.

I watched Solo a Star Wars story it was difficult to sit through. Well intentioned but poorly shot and lit. And the movie is all over the place. It can be fun in places. But i still have the unmistakable feeling the leads were miscast. The supporting players are excellent. Still feels like a fanfilm with a kid playing Han. And not actually Han. Should he have played Harrison i’m not sure. But it just doesn’t come off right. Maybe it was on purpose to make him Smug and unlikable.

As many of the targets the film tries to hit and misses i still would have liked a sequel. The film is all setup and there is no payoff.

How many good third movies in a trilogy can you name?
Time

Sequels in general are almost never as good as the first entry and usually their biggest sin is they are a remake of the first film in some way or form. Or they destroy the goodwill of the first entry, do things that aren’t in the spirit of the original film.

Honestly the Godfather 2 and Empire Strikes Back don’t make those mistakes but a lot of franchises do.

I’ve never seen a third entry i thought was better the the first film in a series ever. And almost never better than the second with few exceptions.

Even the best of the third films in franchises like Return of the Jedi, aren’t that good. Fun and enjoyable if you aren’t looking to be critical and nitpick. But great entries in their own right, stand on their own. Hardly.

Return of the King is an isolated case being better than the Two Towers but not better than Fellowship of the Ring.
