After 25 years…
Time

You can say what you want about the prequels, but they do reflect Lucas as a filmmaker and all his strengths and weaknesses are on display.

Every director has their style and eccentricities. I just don’t get how people don’t notice the same issues in his earlier films maybe because they are better movies?

Or maybe he had help with the screenplays.

The whole digital cinema and we’ll fake it in cgi and fix it in post, is almost every major comic book or fantasy or science fiction film now.

Question about GOUT's, Opening Crawl, etc.
Time

The actual state of the negative and whether or not there are sufficient good quality sources to restore the film to its original state lie within Lucasfilm itself.

Of course, we can’t leave things up to chance seeing how since 1997 the entire point of Lucas was to erase that the originals ever existed. They were a rough draft, a work in progress he was forced to release, and he was unhappy with them and so, and on.

It’s completely unconscionable to leave it up to Loc and BFI to have to rescue these movies, as is 4k77 wouldn’t even exist if George had done the right thing.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.
Time

I like to think of Palpatine as the evil Kenobi, I don’t know what George’s plan was, one is the evil father and is the good father. The best aspect of the prequels is the story it tells visually and with music, the dialog and acting are often the things that pull it down. You do have standout moments like the opera scene but they are few and far between.

I also think Ewan did a good job with you were the chosen one speech.

I actually like some of the derided goofier moments in Attack of the Clones, they bring levity and fun to a very wooden movie. And yeah the duel between Dooku and Anakin and Obi-Wan is mostly good. But then you have cartoon Yoda fighting Dooku.

The 2006 is quite a strange facsimile, as its not at all the theatrical cut. Its just the Definitive collection with worse more compressed audio of the 1993 mix, with the 1977 crawl tacked onto the beginning.

Still its pre–Special Edition if not quite the real deal.

Earlier releases did have the theatrical 35mm mix the Dolby Stereo, so they must just have been incredibly lazy. Seeing how fans could retrieve the audio off of laserdiscs. Or even VHS.

I’m getting up there in age and even I haven’t seen the pre 1981 cut on 35mm in the cinema. It hasn’t been shown in over 40 years. Nobody has seen it since 1980. Beyond an odd screening here or there, but not more wide and broad, no restored print exists.

Best Pan and Scan OUT release?
Time

I think it is personal preference. The only THX Pan and Scan on laserdisc is the Hong Kong release.

But there is the quiet reissue in the 90s with the same catalog number of the first issues in CLV all with digital sound, likely same video master. In the USA. and there was Pan and Scan reissues in Japan the Evergreen releases, all with burned in Japanese subtitles.

And the Faces Pan and Scan VHS, and the only perseveration I ever had was Dark Jedi’s Pan and Scan Faces I haven’t been able to source new copies.

I bought Megalopolis two months ago, today i go into my library the film is no longer available because it was pulled due to contractual reasons. No refund and i can’t watch my movie just because i waited a few weeks.

This is the first time I’ve bought something, and it wasn’t on the server after it left rental or purchase.

What a crooked thing to do, oh well we sold the rights to Peacock. Why sell me something and then take it away.

A kindred spirit from 1995
Time

I wonder what happened to the site admin that site hasn’t been updated in ages. Also, they suspended and apparently deleted the forums that used to be there unless they are archived somewhere.

I never got too heavy into CED i have the Star Wars trilogy and was looking at getting some other ones but players are expensive. And it’s about equal to VHS quality so it’s not worth the money sink.

I did want to get the Hobbit Rankin Bass to see which version it was.

My Mom’s aide gave me attitude and accused me of things i’m not even doing, she gets paid an enormous amount of money to work 5 hours a week. I put in that amount daily and I don’t get paid.

Twice today I had picked my mom’s recycling off the ground because she put in bin with no lid and its blowing, blowing around.

And her aide gets angry at her for being in a wheelchair, but my mom likes her she would sooner fire me.

God forbid her aide follows the rules on putting recycling in the recycle instead of the trash dumpster. It was just as suggestion not an accusation.

Trash and recycling it doesn’t matter, well the environment matters to me lady.

And the attitude I have to the work the day after new years. so did I every single bleeping year, you deserve a medal.

Me storing stuff at mom’s place are you kidding me, I have boxes of her pictures and glassware and god knows what else in my apartment.

The last 7 months moving 3 times and dealing with the new owners who took over the apartments who want to run it like a Condo has been hellish. Lets hope 2025 is better. Though accusing me of not paying first and last when I know I paid I have to go the bank and get statements to prove it. Accommodating to the disabled and elderly hardly, they no longer have covid as excuse to mistreat us. You call there no one ever answers, and the office doors are always locked and they are only open twice a week 9-12. But maintenance is there 6 days a week. Moved me into a new unit with no room, paying more rent less freedom, no back yard, can’t make noise. Crazy neighbors. I could have done without the entire charade. Plus I always have neighbor’s false complaints and following me and taping me with their phone. Years ago you could cook hamburgers outside or run a garden hose without someone tattling. Now god forbid i put up my tv loud enough to watch a film, forget about it.

'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread

They were concerned more with corporate synergy than telling a story, they treated the sequels like toy commercial. A way to move other merchandise. I mean come on its Disney they are about the theme parks and merch.

I would love a Rey standalone or episodes 10, 11 and 12. If they can outline them and have an actual story and worldbuilding. And not have to have tie ins fix it for them later or tv series. I think they haven’t learned a thing from the Clone Wars or prequel situation, if anything they’ve made the same mistakes Lucas did and more. Because at least the prequel had progression and world building.

And the EU gave developing character arcs for Han, Luke and Leia that sequels failed at. And Luke successfully passed on what he had learned, became a husband and a father. His Jedi order lasted over a hundred years. Lukes in Disney lasted 6 years or something like that.

And the New Republic and Empire are never even addressed in the sequel trilogy at all. They created a First Order and Resistance just so they could do Rebels VS Empire again. They did the Kylo thing because they wanted another Vader.

I’m not in that group of people, excited to go out and read 3 comic series and several novels to fix someone’s bad movie.

Even the merchandising and Disney EU consumed the movies under Disney, the all one canon nonsense, just make a good movie forget about that stuff. Don’t MCU Star Wars so people have to do homework. Do your exposition within the film.

Retcons can only get you so far. I almost feel bad for the story group, because there is supposed to be a canon they follow with these movies, and nobody believes in it anymore. Not when Filoni changes something every five minutes, they got themselves into a fine mess and unlike the old canon they can’t push it into legends and say this was never canon.

What is your personal canon?
Time

Depending on my mood it might just be the original film, radio drama and books and comics from the 70s and 80s.

Or might extend to the entire Star Wars trilogy but nothing before 1997.

Some of the EU books are in there not all, i have to give it a thought, but the Zahn books the original ones not Disney.

Dark Empire I and II but not Empire’s End.

Tales of the Jedi, the X-wing books.

Basically, nothing prequel or Disney. Though I will say how much i enjoyed those prequel era games, comics, pre Filoni material.

I do like Young Jedi Knights and for me Jedi Academy trilogy is a mixed bag. But i wish there was an alternate EU after Vision of the Future which isn’t the Vong Invasion, so no New Jedi Order, and no Legacy of the Force, or Fate of the Jedi. Jacen doesn’t become Hayden Skywalker 2.0 .No New Sith of week and if there was way to do so, I would have limited the Superweapon of the week in Bantam and Dark Horse.

Anakin isn’t killed because George was confused over two Anakin’s. Mara isn’t killed. Boba Fett doesn’t do what he did in those books training Jaina.

Han, Leia and Luke retire gracefully and the new generation takes over. They aren’t slaughtered for shock value, die for completely no reason. Or lie down and will themselves to die.

Sometimes a non-negative review or middle of the road review will be scaled as a rotten. If it’s not a glowing review that entire system is flawed.

A lot of movies are going to hit that middle road from an excellent film to the worst movie ever made.

But the aggregate is being used to promote Fresh and Rotten. And they’ll be rotten film you’ll enjoy but the critics hated, and they’ll be 90% fresh films you see, you will absolutely loathe.

Cinema Score can also be misleading there are some atrociously bad films that get an A rating.

I suppose you can see critics as being the first influencers, before youtube personalities and social media stars. Or even in my day pop star idols, you were told what music to listen to, how to dress and so on. and it was all about corporate and capitalist ventures.

Make up your own mind, and have your own identity is a maxim.

I thoroughly dislike review bombing, brigading and gatekeeping. If that is what you referring to SuperWeapon.

RT is simply supposed to take reviews from other sites and be an aggregate. But they treat them like the new Siskel and Ebert or something.

And I didn’t always agree with them either. Or the Peter Travers of the world, but at least they had some journalistic knowledge and knew movies.

Are you glad Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney or do you wish he hadn’t?
Time

I agree in spirit with what you are saying nobody should be mistreated for liking Star Wars. Or harassed.

For me Star Wars is the first three movies. And only first two are good. The third is mediocre. They are fundamental Star Wars, the prequel is supplemental. Disney is almost elseworlds, in fact some days I consider the Sequel trilogy to be Infinities, despite having Mark, Carrie and Harrison in them. Despite disappointment, I don’t want those films erased.

The artists and creatives who worked on them deserve to be respected, if not lauded critically.

But what one considers canon to them personally and what is official Star Wars are two separate things.

Your worst or risible scenes/sequences in any Star Wars tv or streaming series?
Time

The Speeder Bike chase is horrible the entire background and city looks cgi generated and badly at that. It seriously looks worse than Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

I don’t mind Joan Jett in Star Wars, but the other costumes look terrible, and the bikes look like nothing Star Wars. The blue bike is especially gaudy looking.

I liked how plucky and heroic and idealistic Rose was, to almost a foolhardy degree. Everyone was screaming at me when I said I liked her character. And I very much disliked when JJ made her a nothing in episode 9. She was all but written out of the movie, in a seeming desire to erase The Last Jedi, and all the elements people complained about, were reversed/retconned. So Rise of Skywalker was a sequel to Force Awakens but not the last Jedi making a sort of duology and no trilogy, I feel like this was a huge mistake.

How do they move forward in the next movie, I have no idea where the story can go. But I’m sure that is why writers get paid to be creative.

This still isn’t going to save this franchise.

The Franchise is 46 years old and includes 12 films, 16 television shows, 110 video games, 380 novels, and nearly 1000 comic books (maybe more, I’m not too sure about my arithmetic). This far in, there’s something for everyone regardless of story preference, age, format, etc. No one thing can save it or sink it at this point. It doesn’t even need saving. It’s a product now, like potato chips. Sometimes they release a Lobster Roll (vile) and sometimes it’s a Salt & Pepper (delicious).

As has long been my thought on the matter - watch what you like, ignore the rest. I can’t fathom why some fans still do battle with a franchise.

Oh, and one awesome 6-hour radio version of the original story. 😉

47 years, you could even say 48 if you are talking about the 1976 novelization. As for the Radio Drama, fantastic. It’s a pretty great standalone story, same with the 1977 film.

So far this series is enjoyable.

I hate M. Night Ramalamadingdong!
Time

I mean I liked the Sixth Sense and I used to like Signs but I don’t now.

But After Earth and The Last Airbender are two of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. And the village was just very, very weird.

I know I hated Unbreakable, but it was when the DVD first came out. I can’t articulate why when i don’t remember the movie it was a very bad comic book movie.

I guess he is an acquired taste as far as filmmakers go, like if you hate a director’s style you aren’t going to like any of their movies.

Or very few you might like one or two out sheer novelty.
