Deep Space Nine
Time

We were lucky to even get Deep Space Nine on DVD. There is never going to be a 2K scan and HD version. And they aren’t exactly hurting because the DVD sets sell well for Deep Space Nine and Voyager. There is a demand for the DVD. Is there for the HD. Doubtful a market exists for 100 dollar per season HD remastering on Blu-Ray disc. Trek fans are stingy they aren’t likely to want to pay like 700 dollars per show for a remastering.

Because i genuinely liked the earlier efforts and i like Steve Carell. But yeah i rented most of them. Its only about 6 bucks for an HD rental. I’ve never really regretted paying to see something recently, except maybe the last Jurassic World but that was dumb but entertaining. Something i wasted money on and never finished. Dr Strange 2.

My niece and nephew keep trying to get me to watch Disney Star Wars. But i’m not interested. 10 bucks a month for that service and you own nothing. I like to own my Star Wars on physical media. Even if it is bad.

The last one i bought tickets for was Force Awakens. I might go see Indiana Jones V but if i do i would be a fool to trust Lucasfilm again.

Added Star Trek Discovery Season 4 Blu-Ray. I have no idea why i keep giving this show a chance, it is something to watch at least while i wait to be disappointed by Season 3 of Picard.

Added Empire Strikes Back 1986 Japan with OBI. Edit: i was outright scammed on this one it was the 84 release with no OBI. Which is worth about 10 bucks and this guy charged me 40, because i mistakenly thought it was new with OBI based on pictures which were lies. He scammed me once but he won’t get repeat business from me. I hate EBay.

Raiders of the Lost Ark with OBI Evergreen
Temple of Doom Evergreen with OBI.
In a lot that also had Regarding Henry with OBI, The Fugitive with OBI. Under Siege II without OBI and a bunch of other Seagal films i’ve never heard of. A lot of junk.

What changes would you make to the Prequels?
Time

I would have liked for them to have been more fun like the originals. To have more adventure and excitement and if they had to be political to focus on the slow seduction to evil of Anakin. Not on trades routes and taxation and trade federations and other absurd things. Maybe those need to exist in a great empire like Asimov, and i know Lucas was going back to them but its boring as hell.

Also maybe something on the Sith philosophy other than the desire to dominate and being pure evil. Like if Lucas made it more interesting than black and white. And the learn the darkside to save padme plot needs to be shot into a sun. It should be Anakin’s desire to master destiny, and bring order to chaos.

If we are talking rewrite of the Saga it should be Luke Lars. Like Vader isn’t going to look for Luke staying with his brother Owen.

Clerks 3. I hated it, such a down ending and i hated how it ruined the second movie.

Edit:

I watched Black Adam. It was decent i was expecting it to be awful. Pierce Brosnan was a letdown though, miscast as Doctor Fate. He looked bored and didn’t sell his performance. The only other casting that was bad was Noah Centenio, the rest were fine. I was expecting the Rock to be bad in this and was pleasantly surprised. He isn’t an actor but he was more than okay playing his role.

Cavill was was wasted as Superman. He was strangely back in his Man of Steel outfit and the Williams theme was bizarre. Its like its in continuity with the Whedon cut and not Snyder cut of Justice League. In it for like 2 seconds Why?

What do you LIKE about the EU?
Time

I sort of liked the Rise of Kylo Ren but i didn’t like the retcon of the Knights of Ren or Hippie Snoke. The Luke Skywalker stuff was good. I also liked the Sith book whatever the heck it was called that had Lando, even if it was a late tie in to Rise of Skywalker. Was it Shadow of the Sith?

There Luke is actively trying to prevent Palpatine’s return and to thwart the darkside. He is trying to find Exegol. He isn’t Jake Skywalker. I liked that Anakin saves him. And that it made both Hayden and Shaw canon.

It actually made Rey’s parents characters.

But yeah it still has to work in the shitty story for the Rise of Skywalker, the Sith Eternal and Occhi and all that garbage.

Anyone else think Empire Strikes Back's Special Edition is actually better than the Theatrical Cut?
Time

My opinion is the 2020 Special Edition is unwatchable. Too much color was taken out, too much dvnr. The audio is at least better than on Star Wars, but i hate all the changes. The Emperor scene is so bad for that alone i find it not fun to watch. I hate the Revenge of the Sith Emperor being in a movie made in the 1980s. I hate Morrison’s Fett. While i find Disney’s version to be tolerable because he is a good actor, here its like he read lines for Lucas over a telephone.

The changes to the score and pacing especially in the alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival are ruinous to the movie.

Wish there was a semi specialized that had all the original effects, a new multi track mix. A cleaned up picture with good colors. And all the stuff that wasn’t supposed to be there like matte lines and garbage mattes removed. Fix misaligned rotoscope. Those kind of things. Remove all the prequelisms.

David Lynch is up for doing a directors cut of Dune!!!
Time

I hope he does it. The studio meddled in the movie and the producer. And laying the blame for its failure at his feet. When he wasn’t supported at all in the process. I’m sure he learned a lesson you can’t create art under those conditions only a compromise. Kind of funny since the reason he didn’t do Return of the Jedi was because he didn’t want to direct Lucas movie and thought Lucas should direct it himself.

We don’t know if the order is destroyed. Since the films had nothing to say about the other surviving Jedi Rey isn’t alone or the Last Jedi. Although they sort of were saying she was going to be the one who brought it back, and hinting at Finn having force sensitivity. The possibility of him being her apprentice.

Ahsoka might not think she is a Jedi anymore but i doubt she is dead, and Ezra is probably somewhere and they can’t be the only Jedi in a very big Star Wars GFFA.

The prequels deserve more respect for the professionals who worked on them. Even if the story in the films and acting isn’t that good. ILM, John Williams. The people who did the visual designs from the art department, to the set builders and others. The editors, sound design. They deserved to have making of books on the same level of quality as the original trilogy. I would have liked to have read about how the Young Indiana Jones crew made the transition to doing a big show like the Star Wars prequels.

Added Star Trek II-IX first issue DVD bundled in with directors Cut 2 Disc of TMP. No reused dirty used DVDs, no bootleg cases. Also just ordered Nemesis first issue widescreen DVD to complete the set.

Its too bad TMP theatrical never had an original DVD release and i have to rely on the Laserdisc or VHS for original stereo audio. But i do remember it was Robert Wise who held back the release because he wanted his version to be the only one available. Its also strange the Special Longer version could get a 4K release with original audio but not the theatrical. Which is 7.1 no 2.0 mix.

The Unpopular Film, TV, Music, Art, Books, Comics, Games, & Technology Opinion Thread (for all you contrarians!)
Time

The Hobbit trilogy was one of the most disappointing film trilogies ever. I think Martin Freeman was a great choice for Bilbo but the overreliance on greenscreen and cgi and not shooting on film, rushed production destroyed those movies. I sort of grudgingly enjoy the first two the third was a disaster. They are up there with the Star Wars prequels and sequels as depressingly disappointing when they could have been amazing.

Added My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke Laserdiscs. All Japan releases.

Star Trek III first Issue DVD.
Star Trek IV first issue DVD.
Star Trek VI first issue DVD. Collecting these for the original audio though its less than 200 Kbps.

Star Trek II First Issue DVD this is the DVD 5 not the DVD 9 reissue that came out a year later i still need that one.
Star Trek V First Issue DVD

I’m pissed that Amazon sold me apparently rewrapped used DVD’s as new. Star Trek VI and IV were in non factory cases and missing the security sticker. The discs look like official discs though. Third party seller fulfilled by Amazon. To charge retail for used DVD’s is scummy.

Prequel Nostalgia
Time

I really don’t have nostalgia for them. I do have a soft spot for Phantom Menace. I enjoyed the laserdisc preservation and 35mm preservation. But i watched them once. I also watched the official 2020 versions of the prequel trilogy once. And filed them away. Menace and Revenge are decent sci fi movies, they aren’t even great or good Star Wars films. Attack of the Clones was easily the worst Star Wars ever until Rise of Skywalker.

The prequel era is great. Only for the stuff outside the films like novels, comics and video games. Animated shows. Most of that stuff Disney has said isn’t canon. The sole exception being Filoni Clone Wars.

The People Who Helped George Lucas shape the saga
Time

To me the illustrators and effects artists/ model makers/ creature effects artists are legends. So many talented folks starting with Colin Cantwell and Ralph Mcquarrie. To Joe Johnston. Dennis Muren. John Dykstra. Phil Tippett. Ken Ralston. Richard Edlund. Lucas hired the best people. And what the OT people did was truly magically and special.

If you had to make at least one SE change
Time

In fact the only problem i have with Star Wars is the cardboard cutout scene in the Throne Room, the Speeder shot. And the lack of a definitive multi track mix with all the added changes from the mono mix. And the misaligned rotoscope on lightsabers. The Garbage Mattes. I’d remove or fix those. But not have Greedo shoot at all. I’d leave all the grain that was on the negative intact, not adding or removing anything. Not trying to make it into a new movie for today. I’d eschew almost all cgi.

how did you react to the Yoda Reveal?
Time

I remember being convinced that the little Muppet was the Jedi Master because i was familiar with fairy tales. Luke was being tested. It was far too obvious. Lucas is many things but subtle isn’t one of them. But still it was clever and Frank Oz did it so masterfully you almost believe he is a real living breathing being. Mark Hamill is a good part of that as well though, because if he didn’t sell it in his performance it would have fallen all apart. With one of the very best scores every written for film, and one of Williams finest achievements.
