Harry Potter Extended Editions (Released)
Time

I have lately gotten a lot of requests for and questions about why movies 1 and 2 are not included. I have mentioned this many times, but apparently, people are missing it or don’t understand.

It is highly recommended that you read post #1 in this thread. It amazes me that so many miss that post completely.

There are OFFICIAL extended editions of Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets that were released by WB. These are the same extended versions that are shown on TV during HP marathons. While I made my own versions of these movies, they are not different enough from the official versions to risk releasing. I could easily see issues with these if I released them. There is no secret pool of additional deleted scenes that I have access to that would make my versions that different. Therefore, you will need to buy these (support the people who made the movies in the first place). They are available on numerous digital video platforms (Apple, VUDU, Amazon, etc.) as well as being available on several different DVD and Blu-Ray physical disc versions.

Don’t push me over and over to release them. I’ve had several people do this. Your request will just be ignored.

Did I say the post was being mean? NO! But, Doctor M, you proved my point at the end of your post. There are picky people and this post was one of them. I’m tired of people saying they are disappointed in my work solely because I didn’t give them what they wanted. I just released a new edit and the first thing that is said is that my work is disappointing because I didn’t provide 10-bit vs 8-bit encoding. All the while, someone out there is disappointed that I used x265 encoding because their 10-year-old rig won’t play it properly.

It is hard not to take comments like this personally when it is literally the very first post after issuing a new release. I’ve tried to walk a fine line between those who complain that my edits are too big and won’t run on their hardware and those who complain that my edits aren’t high-quality enough. I’m in a no-win situation. I either provide a high-quality release that some people will gripe about not being able to run or I release a lower-quality release that is just not good enough for some.

While part of me hopes that the last 2 movies in this series get made, another part of me hopes this is the end and I don’t have to release any further versions. The fun was taken out a couple of years ago when my draft clips were taken from my site and were used to create versions not made by me but with my name all over them. I pulled my edits at that time, ready to walk away from the community. I came back after a few months and provided them again. Since that point, it has been a constant set of complaints. It is not fun releasing anymore for this reason.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there isn’t a way for me to not take it personally when that is the primary type of message I get. No one is satisfied. No one is thankful. No one will just enjoy what has been provided to them. I’m not charging for these. They are freely available. If it isn’t good enough quality, delete them or don’t download them to start with.

Short of another FB movie coming out, this will be my final release. Even then, I am not sure I will publicly release anything I create for myself going forward. I’m tired of trying to please everyone and ending up pleasing no one.

I’ve had several people ask whether I’m going to do a version of Secrets of Dumbledore or not. I would think it would be pretty obvious that I’m at least going to consider it. I haven’t answered in the affirmative because without seeing what is on the discs and the quality of the deleted scenes, it is hard to tell how difficult it may be, how much extra work may go into the edit, and whether the scenes will add anything to the final film.

I will be getting my 4k/blu-ray set tomorrow when it is released. I will have a better idea after I have time to spend looking at the content.

For those that continue to post in the public forum asking for my current edits, I wish you would take the time to read some of the past posts, especially the very first post in this thread. You would save yourself a lot of time waiting.

I wish I had gotten some of this feedback sooner so I could have addressed the issues that are obviously present in this release.

I have made the decision to temporarily take down my v2.0 releases due to quality issues. I am rendering out high-resolution h.265 releases, which is what I had originally intended for this version. There were complaints when I first mentioned I was going to do this for v2.0 (“my system won’t play h.265, how could you do this to us, blah blah blah”). I should have stuck to my guns instead of compromising quality for a few people. These will be at a higher render quality to produce a better viewing experience. I will also be adding the AC3 audio track back into the release. Again, I took someone’s advice that the track was unnecessary and only added extra size to the files. I should have not taken this advice and again released what I felt was right.

So, lesson learned. I will release what I think should be released. If your system can’t handle it, that is not my problem. Long ago, I used to get the yearly release of the EA Sports NHL game for my PC. Every year I had to upgrade something on my PC in order to play the game well. I could bitch and complain if I wanted to, but ultimately EA released what they wanted using newer technology. That is what I am doing here. The h.265 codec is more efficient at compression to lower file size without compromising quality. If you can’t play these files, don’t download them. I will not compromise quality again for a few people that will complain.

It will take a couple of weeks to get all of the new renders done since my system renders h.265 at a slower rate. Hopefully the end result will be worth it.

For those that want to complain about having spent time downloading this previous version, just hold your complaints. I don’t want to hear them. All I can do at this point is say I’m sorry for wasting your time. I cannot make everyone happy and in this particular case I haven’t made anyone happy.

I need some honest feedback on these releases. I received a bad review from a user pointing out a lot of things that I have not heard anyone else mention anything about. I need to know if these are legit issues that I need to look into resolving.

First, they indicated issues with the 5.1 audio track only being in AAC and not in AC3 format. For those with 5.1 setups, has this been an issue for you? Have you not been able to use the 2.0 edits because the track was not in AC3?

Are users able to get the subtitles that are built into the video file to work? They are intended to work without you having to have the external SRT file. I know some have asked for the external files, which is why I provide them, but those have mainly been where people didn’t know the subtitles were there already. Is this an issue that users are seeing?

Finally, what are your thoughts on the video quality? With doing higher compression to get the size down, I knew there would be some compromises on quality, but I haven’t seen this. Do others think the quality is poor? The comment indicated that it was “painful” to watch these with the quality drop from v1.5. Are others seeing and experiencing this?

I’m not looking for pats on the back or praises. I need legit honest feedback. If these suck, tell me. I haven’t gotten that impression from anyone that has seen them, but maybe only the people that like them have given feedback.

I have created a spreadsheet for those that have offered to assist to create translated captions for my releases. If anyone else would like to assist with any of the languages that I list in the spreadsheet, please let me know and I will add you to the list. As captions are completed, I will put marks in the columns in the sheet indicating they are finished. If there is a language you would like to translate the captions into and it isn’t listed in the sheet, let me know and I will add your name and that language.

If you volunteer, please know that I appreciate your efforts. I hope you will commit the time to complete them. They will be a very nice addition to the releases.
