Oh, my uncle. How am I going to explain all this.
Oh, my uncle. How am I going to explain all this.
No, I don’t think they should, it should be avoided. To be fair, the argument that there are fans who grew up with them holds no water. If people were born under a dictatorship, would that justify them prefering the dictator to an elected leader?
If you ask me, future films shouldn’t be afraid to contradict content from the prequels, or even the expanded universe. Only the OT must be considered untouchable.
-Special edition featurette where Lucas and his crew put their feet in their mouths and admit the whole affair is nothing but an ego project, where the original trilogy was used as a testing ground for the prequels.
-Irving Kershner’s cameo in said featurette.
-Convention where Lucas said Star Wars was originally envisioned as “The Trageduh of Darth Vadah”.
-The Star Wars Ring Theory.
-The notion that them prequels were smarter than the original trilogy because they dealt with political machinations.
I’m still not acostumed to Dinseywars, but I’m sure their films will age gracefully.
How come there’s 5 pages of people discussing this change? It is not objetively true that Hayden should never have been inserted into the film?
I liked Rogue One a lot, more so than TFA. Some random thoughts:
-Che Gueva… err, Saw Gerrera is called an extremist but doesn’t do anything worse than the rebels in the OT, or the Jedi in the PT. No, the tentacle monster doesn’t count.
-The comedy mostly worked.
-I don’t think the fanservice/nostalgia factor was as excesive as others suggested.
-I liked how Tarkin basically took the Death Star for himself.
-CGI Tarkin fooled me. Cartoon Leia did not.
-I could have done without Vader.
-“Don’t choke on your aspirations” is an objectively stupid line.
-Connects beautifully with ANH… only in a clinical B follows A manner. I will get into that when I can properly express it.
-As far as Edwards’ filmography goes, this is much better than Godzilla, but nowhere as interesting as Monsters.
Clones and Sith are the worst films of the franchise, period.
The worst film in the franchise is TPM. Clones and its successor are not films 😉.
I don’t think it’s the worst. This one seems more cringey to me:

The SE (mis)places it during the extended Mos Eisley reveal. I think the scene works well without any music, much like the Empire duel I’m used to hearing it like that and wouldn’t have it any other way.
What I would consider a worthy extra is a reel that has the edited cues re-instated and/or scenes that were recut to presented in their original form with their unedited cues (like the Sail Barge assault).
Added Toy Story and Monster Zero.
Added that and Alien. Will add the Toy Story 2 one when such a release is confirmed.
I wasn’t refering to M&E tracks, rather the opposite, tracks that include only the sound effects and dialog.
alexp120, you mean the release on The Alien Legacy?
Thought this might a useful guide for editing/preservation:
Atragon (1963) - Drama LP. Contains all sound effects and dialog in the right channel.
Monster Zero (1965) - Drama LP. Same as above.
Alien (1979) - 1999 DVD has an alternate track with (incomplete) production audio.
Mortal Kombat (1995) - '90s DVD. Center channel on the 5.1 track is devoid of the rock and pop songs. The percussive elements of George S. Clinton’s score are still audible, though. Not sure if the Blu-Ray is any different.
Toy Story (1995) - Ultimate Toy Box DVD, contains SE tracks for the first two films.
GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack! (2001) - Sony DVD and BD. Center channel on the 5.1 has the dialog and sfx almost fully separated from the music. This applies to both the Japanese and English audio.
The Room (2003) - Center channel on the 5.1 only has dialog.
If you know of any other film/release like this, let me know, I shall add them to the list.

The MHD isn’t available in HD. The point is to try and prepare a decent-looking HD copy of the film with as little upscaled SD material as possible.
That’s the thing, though. Toho’s HDTV is less than stellar. The currently available copy of Godzilla 1985 at least has more accurate colors, and at least registers more detail, even if hampered by the compression and artifacts.
It’s so silly. Palpatine ought to have looked in Sith like he did in Clones, and vice versa. That way it would be more believable that he looks the way he does in Jedi.
I don’t think it’s a good idea to use the Japanese version as a main source. Your best bet would be trying to improve the MHD as much as possible, perhaps only using the Japanese footage for the 2 shots that have macroblocking.
The removed mountain from the Binary Sunset. Still at Tatooine, Obi-wan’s new screams baffle me to no end. C3P0’s line “we’ve stopped!” is another one when I the logic behind it escapes me. Also, was that line recorded in 2004 or it’s an outtake?
Isn’t the only reason people didn’t want a lightsaber was because he called it a Jedi weapon in Rotj.
Also in Star Wars, Obi-wan says “this is the weapon of a Jedi knight”. Those are not the only reasons, mind you, but they ought to be enough.
Because it is absolutely critical that we get this right…
It is? I thought the only thing that mattered in this particular thread was to rank the scores, which I did.
Not so much mocking, I’m merely separating those movies from my Star Wars. Sure, they’re considered “official” and “canon” (hate that word), but it’s undeniable they’re material that was done decades after the source and by different people.
"The expanded universe includes books, comic books, video games, toys, television films and other assorted media."
Surely that means films other than those in the OT.
With the OT it’s difficult to decide. Even though Empire has the most consistent score from start to finish, my favorite cues are in Return and Star Wars. If I’d be forced to choose a singular theme to save (not surprising given some of the threads here) I’d certainly pick the entire “Battle Of Endor II” suite, more specifically the cues pertaining the duel and Vader’s redemption.
In regards to the EU scores:
RoTS - What a score. In my mind I picture a completely different movie.
TPM - The score really picks up steam during the third act. Shame it’s so choppily edited in the film.
TFA - Works great in the film, but as a standalone experience I find it dull.
AoTC - Only the main themes appeal to me.
Palpatine should have never confronted anyone physically, period.
It makes it more dramatic. Just take a look:
We may never see Star Wars released in its unaltered form in Blu-Ray and DVD.
We may never see Star Wars released in its unaltered form in Blu-Ray and DVD.
Now, which one seemed the most urgent and heartbreaking to you?
Yes, but why make 100 threads here? If “We need to put them on notice” wouldn’t it be logical to ask Dinsey, instead?
But it was released.
