What changes would you make to the Sequels?
Time

Some things that I would change were things that I believe were pretty clearly being hinted at in ‘The Force Awakens’ but were not picked up on for VIII and IX. Rey was clearly being touted as a Skywalker, possibly Luke’s daughter. Finn and Rey had romantic feelings for each other, and Finn had potential to be a future Jedi. The are lots of other tweaks I would’ve made (the biggest is bringing Palpatine back, truly the ‘jumping the shark’ of the SW universe), clearly the movies suffered from not truly having the entire story mapped out, but letting each director kind of ‘wing it’ as they went along

DUNE (2021) Minimalist (Audio) Fan edit idea(s)
Time

This post is more a sharing of my ideas for a fan edit of Denis Villenueve’s Dune, thoughts that I have had while watching the movie (many times). As I have no time on my own to implement any of these ideas, I thought I would share them in this forum. I generally really love most of the movie, and would leave it mostly the way DV presented it (as no deleted scenes have been released, an extended version would not be possible), but the only things I would try to improve upon have to do entirely with the audio aspect of the film. Here are a few of my ideas;

  1. Remove the Sardukar dialogue from the beginning of the movie when the ‘Dreams are messages from the deep’ subtitle comes on the screen. Personally, I feel the dialogue does nothing for this scene, and doesn’t really make sense within context of the movie, as the Sardukar are clueless to Paul’s dreams.

  2. While I love Hans Zimmer’s score, I personally feel it is mixed a bit too loud in certain places within the movie, mostly when there’s anytime one is straining to hear dialogue over the score. I don’t have specific scenes to point out right now, but I may update this post in the future with thoughts on that.

  3. While I don’t think this is possible, if there are ways to somehow improve Rebecca Ferguson’s dialogue (enunciation) on scenes where she’s whispering, that would be something to address as well (I realize short of having the dialogue re-recorded, there may not be anything that can be done with this).

Thanks for taking the time to read this post, let me know what your thoughts may be with these suggestions. And if anybody actually takes the time to implement these ideas, I would be anxious to check out the results!

Help: Looking for... "Dune" extended TV edit with original aspect ratio
Time

There are laserdisc and DVD versions of the cropped extended version out there, but as the last poster stated, the 2006 DVD Extended Version is only cropped for the Prologue, the rest of the movie is in the 2:35.1 native aspect ratio. Personally, my wish is the the Widescreen Extended Version would be released in full HD, not just the theatrical parts like the Japanese Blu ray, where all of the Extended scenes are upconverted from SD to HD (though they did a decent job of it)

David Lynch's - DUNE - The Third Stage Edition (Released)
Time

Hi,

this thread is rather old. However the Third Stage Edition is my favorite version of “Dune”.
Since 2014 a German BluRay of the TV version in widescreen is available.

So if Phineas is still reading this he might be interested in doing a HD 1080p version of his Third Stage Edition.

Please respond in the thread or by PM and I could help out sourcing the TV version on Bluray

Thanks.

If the German Blu ray you are referencing here uses the same master as the Japanese Extended Blu ray, then the Extended scenes are just upscaled to 1080p and are not true HD. They are spliced in with the scenes from the theatrical version, which are true 1080p HD. Do you have a link for the German Blu ray?

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

I just displayed them the way they were originally released when they came out. In 1980 and '83, the movies were simply released as ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Return of the Jedi’. They were not originally marketed as ‘Episode 5’ or ‘Episode 6’. So for me, that’s how I remember and associate them. I did edit ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ in my original list though. YMMV

If George Had Made The Sequel Trilogy...

Lucas would never have collaborated like JJ did. So no Kasden. He couldn’t have gotten the performance out of Harrison Ford that JJ did.

What performance? Harrison was rather at his average in TFA. Even in ROTJ, when he obviously didn’t want to try too hard, he seems amazing compared to TFA.

I found Harrison Ford to have put in a better performance in TFA than he has done in a long time, certainly better than Crystal Skull. It was Han Solo, not grumbly old Ford like so many of his recent performances.

Lucas might have convinced him to come back via the method of “truckload of money”, but Harrison would have half-assed it. Of course Lucas would have half-assed it as well so it would be consistent.

I remember reading back in 2007 that George had offered Harrison close to $40,000,000 to do Episode VII. Harrison’s response was something like, ‘There’s no way in hell I’m going to let you put me back in that cockpit with Chewbacca again!’ Harrison was excited to do TFA because he thought the script was great and Disney hired the right people to do the movie, and it showed in his performance.

Idea & Info: Amadeus - Original 1984 Theatrical Restoration
Time

I am also a fan of the theatrical version over the Director's Cut. Many of the added scenes in the DC take away from the flow of the movie for me. I had thought about trying to do some kind of edit of the Blu-ray at some point to try and recreate the theatrical cut, but I simply don't have time to dedicate to such a project. I still have the flipper DVD, but obviously the PQ or AQ are not on par with the Blu-ray

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Harmy,

Not sure about how to replace the single frame, but as to encoding each reel seperately, once encoded you can import them all into tsMuxer. Add the first reel, the hit the 'append' button to sequentially add the other reels. From there save your file to whatever file format you choose. This will give you one seemless master file that won't have to be reencoded. From there you can just demux the video or add it as is into whatever program you use to merge files to a .mkv file
