Jackie Chan Hong Kong restoration project UPDATES (Released)
Time

Just my two cents on the Japanese Blus of DM and SITES.

The image quality on both movies is excellent. They do however have the credits in English rather than Chinese. It also looks to me like the titles were digitally recreated, and are not actually on the print itself. DM's Cantonese track is more complete than on previous Sony releases, but it's still not 100% complete. All the dialog has been restored, but there are a few moments during fight scenes where it switches to the English dub (grunts, screams, etc.) The music in the opening scene is also timed incorrectly. The sound quality is decent, but I feel like it could be better. The sound quality on DM in particular varies greatly. Does any Laserdisc release of DM contain the full Cantonese audio? Of course, there are no English subtitles. The subtitles from the old Sony DVD sync up nicely, but they are dubtitles, unfortunately.

Great to hear! I recently re-watched Drunken Master 1 (in HD, no less), and I'm really looking forward to re-visiting DM2.

I've been wondering, did anyone ever capture the HD version of Dragons Forever that was up on Netflix? It had the Miramax logo at the beginning, but it was in Cantonese with English subs, and as far as I remember, it was in real HD, unlike the Blu-rays. It's not available anymore. Would be a shame if no one capped it.

The final fight scene in Police Story 2 is particularly bad in terms of audio sync. If you sync up the sound effects, the dialog falls significantly out of sync and vice versa. What software do you use when syncing audio and video?

Also, does anybody know if the 1080p versions of First Strike and Who Am I? on iTunes are OAR and have decent image quality?

The German Blu-rays mostly use the upscaled Fortune Star transfers, but at least 'Heart of the Dragon' and 'City Hunter' are true HD. A lot of them have original Cantonese mono, but not all of them do. Some include alternate cuts. I also think they're releasing some films that haven't been out on Blu-ray before, so who knows what those look like.

I have an observation about subtitles. I noticed on your Police Story custom that the subtitles were placed on the black bar below the 2.35:1 frame. Of course, this is just down to personal preference, but, personally, I prefer to have the subtitles placed inside the frame (at the bottom of the frame). Maybe it would be worthwhile to have two subtitle streams, one below the frame, and one inside the frame?

DVD authoring - aspect ratio
Time

I'm having some problems authoring an anamorphic PAL DVD. I'm using HCgui to encode the MPEG stream and I'm using a trial version of DVD Lab Pro to author it. It plays fine in PowerDVD and Windows Media Player, but VLC player displays the wrong aspect ratio. It outputs 2048 x 576 resolution. I can fix it by selecting 16:9 in the aspect ratio menu, but what is causing this problem? Any ideas?
