Help: looking for... TESB Definitive DVDR fix
Time
Heh....I've got a "method" Huhuhuhuhu...That's cool, Beavis...
Yeah, I got it down to 1 frame, it's still there, BUT is only as bad as a layer change now, which I can live with. I extracted the whole thing as an MPEG2, then edited it in TMPEGDVD. As it has been noted, unfortunetly you WILL NOT be able to get any closer than 1 frame unless you have access to the original, uncompressed footage, OR go back and recapture the whole movie from LD again. You can cut out exactly on the shot change, but cutting back in gives you the last frame of the gap. Whoever did the encoding (TR47 admits it's not his work, he's just selling them), ended up with that last black frame being an I or P or B frame (I can never remember which is which ), so for the file to work as an MPEG2, it HAS to remain. On the whole, I'd definetly say it was worth the little time it took to fix.

So...um...anyone working on the DE-SE DVD?
Time
Are you going to be able to use any of the stuff fom disc 4? It looked like there was some promising restored, UN-Se'd footage in the documentaries. Is there any way we'll be seeing these released at all (torrents, trades, anything?)? Also, are you planning to release it as PAL or NTSC? DVD-5, 2 DVD-5s, DVD-9? Damn, so many questions...SO. MUCH. ANTICIPATION. Really looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with.Keep up the good work!.

I fell to the Dark Side but Redeemed Myself (2004 OT DVD)
Time
The problem with Battlefron is that, while the engine is good, and the mechanics of the game are good, LEC rushed Pandemic to release the thing in conjunction with the damn DVDs. SOOOOOOoooo, what you end up with is a well built game, which lacks every single thing which would make it replayable beyond a couple of days. You cannot alter the conditions of play, the length of games, pit Empire against CIS, rebel against Republic, etc, etc. There's also no strategy involved in the game AT ALL. There's no reason to capture and hold command points, as EVERY game devolves into a deathmatch, usually centered on vehicles. IF LEC and Pandemic get off their asses and release the SDK, the game will be a fantastic play, and enormously rewarding. In its current state, I'd say rent it for a couple of nights.

Well, there was much ballyhooing and talk of taking the DVDs and de-SE'ing them. We've now had the things for a few weeks, anyone actually working on it? I only ask because, well, almost everything they did to further enhance the films REAKED to HELL. I mean, the new Jabba stuff was WORSE than the SE Jabba! I NEED a high quality version of these films that haven't been fucked with.

Idea: About De-SEizing the DVDs... We need to Vote on Changes!
Time
Well, if this is a discussion about doing a "Best of Both Worlds" version....I could live with:

The digitally darkened skies

The cleanup on the landspeeder shots

ObiWan's new house

Buisier distant shot of Mos Eisley (#9)

The more interesting path of the falcon leaving Mos Eisley (#20)

The new digital matte of half of docking bay 327 (no one notices that? It's really quite a nice touch and fixed a pretty bad perspective problem)

The new detention block hallway

New lightsabers throughout, including the fix of ObiWans saber in the dissapearing shot

All the new sounds during the Falcons' escape from the DS

The Falcon LANDING on Yavin 4, not the approach shots, just that one with the rebel trooper

The new temple

To emphasize, there are some cuts I feel particularly strongly about needing to be made:

Obviously Han shoots first
NO Jabba.
NO extended entry into Mos Eisley. THAT was piss poor work by ILM, no question.
NO rings on the planet and DS explosions.
NO "close the blast doors!". The line is funny, the ORIGINAL reading, which I remember from '78 was funny. This is a crappy read.
NO conversation with Biggs and Red Leader. The Biggs conversation is stilted, but okay. The big problem is that it leads directly into theconversation with Red Leader, and that god awful wipe to eliminate all reference to Anakin. If the entire scene existed somewhere, I'd say use it, but as is, no.
NO "Buy the Toys!" shot of the fighters rising out of the forest

Seemingly overlooked tidbit from AICN
Time
Just saw this on that festering pool of crap that is AICN...

From another review of the DVDs:

"There’s lots of great behind the scenes footage that we’ve never seen before and some DVD quality transfers of shots from the movies that have been cut and replaced in the Special and DVD Editions."

Now, it doesn't say how much is there, but there might be a begining of the "ultimate edition" which has been batted around here lately, assembled from the official DVD transfer, and inserting original shots where appropriate. Something to get our hopes up for, I think...

The OOT on DVD - then what?
Time
"The OT wasn't filmed on 70mm, was it? I was under the impression that was 35mm and blown up for 70mm."

I'm pretty sure ANH was shot 35mm, and blown up, but that the others were shot 70mm. Might be mistaken though. In any event, I've certainly noticed detail in the theater which is simply mush on a DVD. In any event, the format doesn't have enough resolution to accurately convey the information in a theatrical print.

So, you were against issuing "Citizen Kane" on disc? "Casablanca"? "Birth of a Nation"? Those were all previously avaialble in one format or another. Yes, technology moves on, but there's no reason not to bring these works with it. As for the OT, the technology of home theaters hasn't even really gotten to the point where we can view the picture in the same detail as the original 70mm prints, so any further improvement in the FORMAT and TRANSFER would be welcomed, by me at least.

An article of lies and disgust - George Lucas talks re the 2004 OT SE DVD release...
Time
Luke, your comment, I believe was about him dying a lonely man with no fan base. That's what I was commenting on.

To reiterate, I'm not defending the re-fucking of the films, I'm CERTAINLY not defending keeping the original versions unavailable (and to those assholes snidely quipping that those of us who WANT to watch the originals go and watch our VHS, Lucas hasn't made those availble for YEARS!!!!!! Literally, if you want to watch the originals, there is no current supply EXCEPT the bootlegs). However, read the articles on the restoration and digitizing of the films for this release. What was done, as I pointed out, was to start a brand new restoration on the existing prints, clean and repair them, and prep a new HD digital master copy which will never degrade the way celluloid does, regardless of how well it's treated. Every frame of every film was done, not a few scenes. It IS an expensive process. I agree that any expense incurred will be recouped ABSOLUTELY, in probably the initial week of sales. Not the point. You can't fault the man as lying about that part of the process, it happened.

I've also wondered about this whole "milking" of the films. How much of what's gone on (and, to be honest, the films have been released an APPALLING number of times in different editions) is Lucasfilm, and how much is Fox. While I'm sure Lucasfilm okayed the various releases, I have a hunch it was something more like FOX video driving a dump-truck full of cash down Lucas Valley road to the ranch and asking permissions to re-issue the films. It's entirely Fox's style to keep flogging a sure thing, and, honestly, if it were your company, wouldn't you be tempted to say "Oh, alright...make the cheque out to 'George'"? Additionally, how much of this current release is Lucasfilm's idea, and how much is Fox's begging and pleading in a year they don't have any huge holliday sellers? Just some stream of conciousness thought....

To be fair, "remastering" is not about the new footage. It's about taking each film, in its entirety, scanning each frame, cleaning up the damage done by the years, and creating a high definition digital master. It is expensive, and labour intensive. And, seriosuly, if you think the measure of a mans' life is how many rabid fanboys are at his funeral, you seriously need to rethink your priorities.

Laserdisc/Dual-Layer DVDr (And "hello" from my first post!)
Time
In terms of quality, remember also that the LD sources for the original versions of the films, are themselves transfers from unrestored footage. While superior to VHS (obviously), they seem a bit muddy, and certainly show more damage than either the restored '97 footage, or the FURTHER restored and repaired upcomming DVDs. And since any transfer from LD to DVD (9 or otherwise) will have to be compressed somewhat, I wonder how much of a difference the extra filesize really will make. Is it going to be noticeable?

An angry Review of the 2004 OT SE DVD's
Time
"Ben was killed off because Guinness refused to do any sequels after Ep 4. All of the scenes that show Ben as a ghost in the later 2 movies were shot ahead of time (probably right after SW was released), which is why some of the shots are a little miscued"

Nooo....actually, that's kinda not what happened, in a not even close kinda way. Original script, and the one Guiness signed to-Ben lives. Halfway through shooting, Lucas changes the ending as far as Ben is concerned, and Guiness, who had been pretty much all that held the U.K. crew together, is so pissed he almost walks. The nonsense over his hatred of the franchise and the fans comes up MUCH later, after the thing blows up to global proportions and he can't walk down the street without being accosted by some fan boy. Guiness films bluescreen scenes for Empire when Empire shoots, not "ahead of time". In fact, has to come back and do ADR at the end of production on some of his stuff because he was sufferring from a horrendous cold when the footage was shot, and the diologue is unuseable.. He returns for Jedi, this time INSISTING that ILM find a way for him do do his scene with Mark Hammil on the Dagobah set, and NOT against a bluescreen (which, incidentally, is why you will notice he NEVER crosses in front of Luke during the scene, AND why the camera is locked during the scene (so ILM can go in and roto the glow in, and composite the transparency). Just thought I'd clear that up.

Question to the DVD-R authors in the house
Time
Thanks, guys! It actually looks like Tmpenc was just reporting it wrong for some reason. I've got the gap down to about a single frame (no way to do it any closer than that without the original, unencoded capture as there's either a B or I frame right on the last frame of black), and it's much less annoying now, not any worse than a layer change on a DVD-9. Did a couple of captures from the "original" torrented files, and my newly snipped version, and it doesn't look like I lost anything at all!

Question to the DVD-R authors in the house
Time
Hey, maybe someone can help me with a little project I'm just finishing up. After getting the TR47 version of Empire, I've gone in and fixed the little 4 second gap error. This was done by simply extracting the VOBs back out to MPEG2 files, loading them into TMPEG DVD, and performing the neccessary cut. The odd thing is, once I go to output it all as VOBs again, I'm getting a massive filesize (well, somewhat over the 4438m allowable DVD-R size anyhoo), and warnings about the combined bitrate being too high. Now, as far as I know, I just plainly pulled the MPEG2 (which is what it would have been to begin with) out, and it should go back exactly the same way. Obviously, I don't want to have to re-encode the thing again, as it'll reduce the quality a generation. Does anyone have either an idea of why this has happened, or, alternaticely, a way to frame-accurately edit a vob directly, or some other way of not losing video/audio quality while making this cut?

Episodes 7,8,9?
Time
Soooooo...just to throw a little fuel on the fire....everyone HAS heard that a bunch of department heads at ILM have been required to sign NDAs regarding episodes 7, 8, and 9, right? This is a sad, sad day. It really should just be left as done, finished, kaput next summer. I grew up with these films, they were the first movies I saw, they moulded most of my expectations and preferences for adventure films ever since. I waited stunned and anxious for TPM, and was disspointed (though not appalled, as some people have been with the PT). But it's over now. We see how things came to be in the OT, and next year is my last year of interest in the saga. No more cash to the ranch...SW has to be stopped before it becomes just another crappy SF series,
