I decided to forgo a DVD ROM in favor of a better case and power supply :-) I have an external BD-RW, so I have no need for an internal DVD-RW.
BTW, what were the tests someone suggested I ran on the HDDs? And is there a tutorial on how to do it?
I really don't know exactly. Will "pretty soon" be enough of an answer?
So, a little update - everything is ordered and we should be building the beast tomorrow night :-)

Well, I think that if it's not dcp and is the same source as wowow, the most logical assumption is that it's from the master used for the hdtv broadcast.

Sorry about the lack of updates about the new computer - the friend who's helping me with it is on holiday (skiing in the Alps - I'm green with envy). We should meet up on Sunday and order all the stuff and then build it during next week.

Yeah, especially in HD, I watched the scene now in a small 360p window on YT and it looked ok but I just skimmed through the BD of Ep II recently and the CGI in that scene looks really bad at that resolution.
When you look at this video, when he switches between the normal scaling and the "detail preserving upscale" you can see, that all this new function does is it pretty much just blurs the image to get rid of pixelation and then it applies an unshrap-mask kind of edge enhancement to the blurred image.
It is also clearly visible in the sample from emanswfan - the edge enhancement is pretty horrible.
As to Spaced Ranger's link, for me the clear winner is the "SAR DataDependentLanczos" which seems to strike the best ballance between sharpness and unnatural edge smoothing (and apparently it's freeware) - some of the filters make the image look really sharp without applying edge enhancement but they turn the whole image into large sharp colored blotches, so it starts looking like a painting. I'd say the second best is VideoEnhancer, which preserves the most detail but has some pixelation and some mild edge enhancement.
Edit: Actually, looking at it again, the VideoEnhancer may actually be preferable in many cases, since it really does preserve a lot of detail - the SAR DataDependentLanczos would totally rock for upscaling animation though.
It would be interesting to see what AntcuFaalb's method would do with that image.
And another edit: Before, I only looked at the image from Panasonic4.avi and now I looked at some of the others and the SAR DataDependentLanczos actually seems to create some really weird artefacts, which would probably look really bad in motion, so the VideoEnhancer totally wins.

That's probably it - the audio tracks are adjusted to GOUT, so they are a bit shorter than the video but I've never experienced the thing you describe, so it must be a VLC bug.
EDIT: I just tried and on my computer, VLC doesn't do it either.
I don't know what else would you want - the gallery shows every single change that's been fixed in v2.5 and the text in each picture describes in detail not only what was changed but also how it was done.

The influx has slowed down considerably after the first few days but a bit more did arrive after I last reported, though I sort of lost count, because I'm transferring it to my bank account (most Czech shops unfortunately don't support PayPal, so transfering to my account is a necessity) but I think it was around $70 more, so I may still go for an SSD on top of the 2 HDDs but we'll see how much it will all come to in the end.
