Here’s a tiny delayed Christmas present 😃

Here’s a tiny delayed Christmas present 😃

When I want to watch a BD movie with subtitles, I usually play it though my PC and add srt subs, because most BDs have really awful subtitles, not in terms of quality but in terms of size and placement - they are usually way too big and with 2.35:1 movies the first line is usually in the picture, while the second line is in the black bar, which IMO is the worst placement of subs you can have, because it totally breaks the cinematic feel - either put them in the picture, which is the way subs would appear in the cinema and it also makes them easier to read while also watching the movie (provided they have a black outline), or keep them in the black bar, so they don’t intrude in the image.
That’s weird - I’m assuming you got the large MKV, since you’re talking about DTS-HD - it definitelly shouldn’t be doing that - it could be a bad download. You could also try just re-muxing it using MkvMergeGUI or maybe making an m2ts file with TSmuxer.
I was thinking that when watching the movie - the light reflections from the sabers looked really natural.
Not sure if you’re being intentionally thick but on the off chance you really didn’t understand the comment, let me explain - Team Negative 1 is creating a digitized version of 35mm film, just like the DCP of Star Wars TFA you saw in the cinema was a digitized version of 35mm (and 65mm) film, so if you’re expecting this project to be closer to the projection quality of 35mm than the DCP, you’re going to be disappointed, just like you must be disappointed with all Blu-Rays and other digital media.
Just to clarify, I too regret the near-loss of film as a projection medium (I’m actually thinking about driving 6 hours to another country to be able to see The Hateful 8 in 70mm) but if I can’t see the movie on actual film, good digital projection is the next best thing - I actually keep a log on projection quality for all projection rooms I visit and I can tell you that the quality of digital projection can vary greatly, so if you only have a couple of experiences with DCP and they were so bad, you may just have stumbled into bad ones - the projection of TFA 2D I saw looked amazing and it was very film-like.
Just saw it in 3D - the CGI space-ship stuff looked much better in 3D and some shots were greatly enhanced by the added depth, like all the wide-shots at the beginning when Rey is scavenging the stardestroyer, or the scene where Han faces Kylo Ren. But over-all, I think I preferred the 2D version.
No, actually, v2.5 has always been my original vision - until v3.0 comes out, then that will have always been my original vision 😄
Cool - it seems like it will be at least a couple of weeks before v2.0 is ready, because the subs will take some time and I won’t have time to work on it until after new year, so I think it’s likely that the new mixes will be included 😃
Also, I think the question about the '97 DTS mixes wasn’t about using them instead of the '93 mix but instead of the BD, so it was about the LFE channel only - correct me if I’m wrong but I think the DTS tracks don’t have a discrete LFE channel, so they probably wouldn’t be the best sources for LFE.
As for the '93 mixes having to be upmixed, during my pre-TFA marathon, I watched Despecialized on a 5.1 setup for the first time and I must say that h_h’s 5.1 up-mixes have better spatial definition than many discrete-channel 5.1 mixes I’ve heard on other movies.
We’ll see - v2.0 will definitely have DTS-HD tracks but they may not be h_h’s latest updates, depending on how fast he and I can get things done.
You definitelly should get the updated versions though - v1.0s are pretty terrible in comparrison and the new ones are also available as DVD9 AVCHD. Your choice though, I’m not gonna George Lucas you into it 😄
Exactly - the yellow flashes have always been there and they look way worse in the SE.
I don’t think he’s screened it yet. But I know for sure that he’s busy working some really awesome job right now, so I doubt he’ll have time to get me references any time soon but maybe in time for v3.0 I could get them, yeah. I’ll probably work on all three 3.0 movies at the same time, because ESB and ROTJ should almost be there in their v2.5 versions but SW will have to be done pretty much from scratch, so I can work on that and leave the final color correction for last.
Well, I would match the cropping to the DeEd, of course.
Oh, damn, I totally forgot I was gonna have to do the subtitles. I’m not at my PC right now - Please send me a PM to remind me - I don’t have any of the subs done yet but I can send you a screenshot from the 35mm scan I’ll be using for the subs.
Great news - these new mixes will be awesome additions to v2.5.
Yes, that’s right - they may have seen a version where a member here fixed a couple of the worst bugs but there’s no official v2.0. But the official v2.0 will essentially be the same as the workprint with just the most jarring bugs fixed, so if you’ve seen the WP you have a very good idea of what v2.0 will be.
Instal some kind of codec pack - KLM or CCCP.
No. There’s still a couple of GOUT sourced shots.
Yes. Step one: read the first post or the ABOUT section on the FB page. Step two: follow the step by step instructions there.
Technically he didn’t shoot first, ONLY han shot, greedo didn’t get a chance to do anything. 😛 There was only one shot.
I’m so tired of hearing this semantic argument - Han Shot First sounds much better as a phrase than Han Was The Only One To Shoot and it’s not semantically wrong at all, because when two people are about to do the same thing, one of them has to do it first and whether or not the other one does it second or doesn’t do it at all, the first one still did it first.
@Moviefreakedmind: I’m sure you wouldn’t be breaking any rules by posting the link if you clearly said that it may contain TFA spoilers 😃
Hearing how beat up that print you saw was, I think it’s entirely possible that this was at a time when the prints started falling apart and reel 6 of the print was quickly spliced together from two different prints and had that part of the final battle repeated twice.
Well, I always say that it’s great for multiple versions of movies to coexist in the same quality, while Lucas only wants one version to exist in the latest format, so I think it’s actually anti-lucasian to think that way 😃
Possibly - I’m actually considering doing multiple color-versions for v3.0 - an I.B. Tech version, which would keep the colors similar to v2.5 (and the I.B. scans) and a more balanced natural looking version (I’d need a more snappy name for it - maybe, since it seems like the Eastman prints were more like that, I could call it the Eastman version), so maybe I could also make a home-video version with colors closer to the most common VHS relases and the '81 crawl but I’m not making any promises 😉
That works just fine. But did you use that animated poster background I sent you?
Very much looking forward to hearing what you thought of TFA as well, Mike 😃
