The Empire Strikes Back "1980 Theatrical version" Reconstruction - Adywan (Released)

...there were about 5 missing frames. I had reconstructed whole this with the missing frames in that shot for ESB:R (and i didn't use the GOUT for the missing frames)

I see you have stripped all of the blue out of that shot in your video.

Lord_Vader:

Where did you get the missing frames then? I tried reconstructing the Wampa scene before and this was always one of the obstacles.

And yeah I did deblue it so it would fit with the rest of the footage.

adywan said:

Now the video on youtube really can't be used to show that you can't really see much of a difference between the low & hi-res sources because of its crappy low bitrates...

...The scene you want to try is the Lando announcement one, but not just place the shots that were blended together in but actually start by using a HD source for the transition. Then you really do notice a huge jump in quality. Plus you will see the problems i went through with trying to match the HD to the GOUT so i could blend in certain element because there is so much frame distortion between the two its just not a simple thing like join the two together.

Lord_Vader:

Yeah, that's true about YOUTUBE, but the shots in the Wampa cave do blend with the HD quite well after some denoising, which of course blurs the detail out of the shot but as there wasn't much detail to begin with it did improve the shots.

And yes, the Lando scene would definitely stand out as it does stand out even in your DVD, not much but it does. But like I said before, if I'm gonna make an HD version for me to watch, I'll only remove the changes that bother me and this isn't one of them.

I haven't seen Ady's Theatrical Reconstruction yet but what shots are in his version that weren't in the original 1980's version?

...

EDIT: Oops, misread the question, Ady's reconstruction is exactly as it was in the 1980 original...

Well..not exactly.

OP:

adywan said:

Now this isn't a 100% true theatrical version as i didn't want to use the low quality GOUT to replace the newly zoomed and cropped cockpit shots that appear in the SE version but all of the SE elements have been removed.

Yeah, sure, I was reffering only to the wampa scene.

OK, did you watch the scene on YOUTUBE? Because if you did, then your question is exactly what I hoped to hear, you actually couldn't tell which of the shots were not HD :-)

And to answer you, it's just two shots: the one of a moving shadow in an empty cave right after Luke wakes up and then the brief glimpse of the monster when Luke tries to pull his lightsabre.

EDIT: Oops, misread the question, Ady's reconstruction is exactly as it was in the 1980 original, it is his AVCHD that keeps the SE Wampa scenes.

OK, I gave the wampa scene a shot at 720p and I think the results aren't bad.

I used Adywan's AVCHD and the THEATRICAL RECONSTRUCTION to put together the Wampa scene as it was in the original TESB, exept for one shot, which I didn't mind in the SE, who can tell which one it is? :-D

You can check it out on YouTube

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Well, I only hope this doesn't end up like the Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray. And I'm of course talking about image quality, not the fact that LOTR only came out in the theatrical version, which we'd love for STAR WARS and which is what LOTR fans complain about (understandably). But to get to the point, the LOTR Blu-Rays are sourced from the same master used for the several years old HDTV broadcast (from about the same time as the STAR WARS HD broadcasts) but they made a new encode for Blu-Ray which actually looks worse than the broadcasts due to an extensive DNR (Digital Noise Removal):

Blu-Ray:

Blu-Ray

HDTV:

HDTV

Click on the pics to show full resolution (I recommend doing so to see the difference)

So we could end up with the 2004 transfers of STAR WARS looking even worse then the HDTV broadcasts we have now :-(

I used the 1080p master file that i used for the SE AVCHD and downscaled this to 480p.

Now unfortunately doing a HD version just won't work. Downscaling the 1080p colour corrected master to 720p still retains most of the detail, but upscaling the GOUT to 720p just really brings out just how bad the quality is when spliced in with 720p video. It just doesn't blend in at all. So the DVD version is all there will be, i'm afraid

Correct me if I'm wrong but IMHO as most people now have HDTVs, that means they will be watching this upscaled to HD anyway, only the quality of the upscale will be worse than if it was done in a computer. But I see your point, the LQ elements probably will stand out less, if the quality of the rest is also lower.

Well, thank you again for doing this, and thank you for trying to fulfil my request and I completely understand that you won't release something, if you're not satisfied with the results.

Oh, well, I'll have to do it myself, then :-) Especially in ESB, there are long sequences where nothing was changed exept for colour (like most of Hoth before the battle, the Yoda scenes, the carbon freezing chamber, the light sabre fight) and I'd feel kind of robbed watching them in SD knowing I could be watching the exact same sequence in higher res. I can just put the whole sequences that were changed in from the DVD and there should be a very few jumps from HD to SD.

I hope you see my point, I don't mind watching something that is better content-wise in lower quality (before the AVCHDs I mostly watched the GOUT) but I do mind watching something in LQ when I know I could be watching the exact same thing in HQ.

Well, yes a large part of this was taken from an HD source (the master files for Adywan's AVCHD) and also a DVD player with upscaling function can hardly have the same hardware as a decent computer and the player has to upscale in miliseconds, computer will take much much longer (time depending on CPU) to do the upscaling even though it has more powerfull hardware, so using a decent software you're bound to have better results upscaling on a computer, than directly from a player.

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW
Time

OK, it seems that my last post ended up last on the previous page and got therefore kinda lost. I'll repost it, I hope this won't be taken as spamming, if so, I apologise:

"And what about the making of documentary? For TESB:R there will be life shooting, model shooting, a lot of visually impresive SG work, I think it would make for an intresting fan documentary. It wouldn't have to be made by Adywan, who will probably want a bit of a break, after finishing his masterpiece, but he could entrust the footage to some of the documentary experts here. A complete supplementary disc would be just awesome."

I've heard a radio interview with Ady about ANH:R and it was really interesting and I think a commentary track would be great. It could be just a low bitrate stream so it wouldn't draw on the video quality or could be available separately to be muxed in at will. The text commentary isn't so great IMHO, it was what kinda bothered me about the deleted magic docs, I think it would have had a lot more of a documentary feel, had the written lines been read aloud.

OK, no matter what I've tried, TehParadox just won't let me register. I must have registered there before (probably a long time ago as I don't remeber it), because it said my e-mail was already being used, so I tried their "forgot your password" thing but it's been several hours and I didn't get the e-mail. So I just tried registering again with another e-mail and it worked but whenever I log in it says:

you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

 1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
 2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
 3. The page you are trying to access does not exist.

And it says this even if I open pages like Forum, Donate or Forum Rules

I'm getting desperate. Could someone tell me what to do? Or better yet, just PM me the links? That would be so great...
