RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)
Time

This thing has gone way beyond what I originally planed it to be. My original idea was that this would be basically just an SD version of the PDE Jedi, with a few more GOUT and KGAR shots spliced in but it evolved into an all new project and that is good, but it also means it may take a bit longer than I originally expected, especially with school coming up next week. I'm not particularly fond of After Effects and my work in it is quite slow but at least now I got some grasp of the basics and don't have to consult a "how to" video every time I try to do something :-)

I'm sure Ady is using After Effects to do the comps, but he wants to do it the way it was done in 1980, shoot real physically existing models in front of blue-screen, which is awesome and should look way more authentic and real than CG can ever hope to.

Ady, I'm personally more interested in what kind of equipment will be used to shoot the new models, life action extras and such. Will you be renting real studio equipment and a professional HD camera?

I mean, Star Wars starts with "... in a galaxy far, far away." I think Lucas recognized that even highly-advanced civilizations weren't likely to leave their own galaxy.

I think his chain of thought when writing it was more like: "OK, this is kinda like a fairy tale, so it's A long time ago in a kingdom, no wait in a... in a... a... a GALAXY, yeah a galaxy, that sounds cool, in a galaxy far far away..."

:-D

OK, the workprint's up, Chewtobacca and Erik, you've got a PM.

The main thing that concerns me is colours. I need you to tell me if you notice any sudden colour change from shot to shot somewhere. Or if the colours seem wrong somewhere (although that is based on opinion but I'd still like to hear your suggestions).

Also, although I'm pretty sure I didn't miss anything, please look for any remaining SE changes.

Thanks a lot, guys, I appreciate it.

Anyone else wants to help?

Harmy hows the edit coming on, are you making progress?

Yeah, I actually just encoded a workprint and will be uploading it for anyone willing to help to try and spot mistakes. It's a 1.2GB 576i AVC, so the quality isn't anywhere near the final DVD but it should be fine to check for mistakes. Anyone interested?

Yeah....I'm a bit confused as well. There wouldn't be any wipes at all on the Original-Original negative (meaning: Camera negative).

All the FX, wipes included, would have been done post-production.

Back in the 1920s they did in-camera FX, like iris wipes. But as motion-photography became more sophisticated, that clumsy practice stopped at least in-part for the reason that if you screwed it up, you couldn't undo it.

I'm becoming more and more skeptical about everything that's been fed to us by Lucasfilm, including what source materials they ACTUALLY used for the SEs.

There are wipes and FX on the original negative, it is a completed cut of the film. The way it works is the director chooses which takes he wants evolved and those are then copied to a workprint material, which is what the editor works with. The editor puts the workprint together and that is then sent to a lab, where the same cut is assembled from the original camera negative material under laboratory conditions, including wipes and FX. That is why separate FX elements are (were) usually shot on 65mm or 70mm, because they were then combined in an optical printer to a 35mm film, which became the FX shot's original negative.

Or at least that's how I think it works, I'm sure Zombie could describe bit more accurately...

Ha-ha, busted!*

Frink, how does one sell their time? I'd like to get rid of some (can't wait for next week). Can I do it on ebay or is there some other way?
