GOUT, Automated Theatrical Colouring, and a Reference Guide
Time

rockin said:

Has anyone actually thought of recolour timing the 1997 SE versions ? They don't seem to suffer the crushed blacks as the 2004 SE, and the Flunk/Reivax and other broadcast sources seem pretty good quality wise to work with. If we could change the colour timing of those and then convert them to the theatrical versions (like Harmy has shown) we could be almost there.

Not saying this is the perfect solution (far from it) but certainly there would be more colour and detail to work with over some of the GOUT sources.

I don't know, I've just finally found and downloaded Reivax ANH to use for my project (I'm still missing the other two and really really need them :-( ) and while it does look like a proper DVD compared to GOUT and the colours are way better (e.g. the death star colours are really close to what the technicolor print shots show) it's DVNR'd to hell, worse than the GOUT in some places. In fact from what I have seen all the 97SE broadcasts have heavy DVNR smearing, so while they can be useful for other edits and should be preserved for completeness' sake, I don't think they would be a good main base for a whole edit.

Harmy's STAR WARS TRILOGY "Partly Despecialized Edition" HD. !!! These version are now obsolete - Look for Despecialized Editions instead!!!

@ Jek Porkins: It was just a mockup, it would look better when done properly, but I'll be using the original one anyway.

@Murry Sparkles: I'll be doing Empire 1st, because I don't have to wait for DJ's V3 for that, because I'll be using Ady's reconstruction for it.

Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)

No, his 1997SE set is sourced from the european broadcasts.

So is it what this thread is about? If so, it might be a good idea to edit the first post, because there it says that it is a LD transfer.

I seriously hope it will be released to the public as well, because I have been hoping to get my hands on the 97SE broadcast versions for ages and I couldn't find them anywhere. Getting them corrected by DJ would be absolutely awesome. Also, I would be ecstatic, if someone could maybe point me towards the original DVDs of those broadcasts, as DJ's, while surely improved, will probably be converted to NTSC and thus lose 20% of resolution and I want to use them for an HD project.

Thank you for all your hard work, DJ!!!

RETURN OF THE JEDI 1983 THEATRICAL VERSION RECONSTRUCTION DVD by Harmy (MKV, NTSC DVD5 AND PAL DVD9 AVAILABLE)
Time

Wrong thread mate, you're clearly talking about the PDE Trilogy. But yeah, I'm sorry, I noticed that the last time I watched the PDE and I had to add delay in MPC. It happened now with the audio "fixed" version :-( I'm not sure what went wrong and it pisses me off to no end :-(

It's interesting too, because this ROTJ reconstruction should be the same frame count as the PDE ROTJ and the reconstruction seems to sync fine with the same mixes.

But to be honest, I can't really be bothered to do anything about it any more because I'll be doing a new version soon and I just downloaded higher quality encodes of the 2004SE in HD and in comparison, ROTJ PDE v1 is pretty badly plagued by compression artefacts (also because the source I used already was) and quite a lot of detail is gone due to that, so it would be polishing a turd really.

Just to make sure that nobody gets confused by this being in the wrong thread, the sync on the ROTJ Theatrical Reconstruction is fine as far as I can tell, it is the PDE where it's a bit off.

EDIT: OK, that's really weird, I just checked the ROTJ PDE again and it seems to sync just fine. Mysterious!!! But I'm quite happy about it :-)

Adywan's reconstruction uses colour corrected 2004 version. He only used the 97SE footage to reinstate the original emperor and even for that he used rotoscoping. But the overall quality of the 97SE broadcasts is quite low compared to the 2004 version (not talking colours here but resolution and artefacts) as they were likely captured through an analog receiver.

Also PM sent.

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time

I just checked the Empire of Dreams but A) It's not there from the beginning B) It's an alternate take from a different angle C) The quality isn't great.

But, man, I totally forgot how great the footage from the films looks in the EoD, I wish the DVDs looked like that. I wonder what the source was. It's possible they used the same source files as the 97SE broadcasts but I don't know...

Probably not, because when you up the contrast a bit, there's not that much difference in the starfields, it's more about the fighters and the DS backgrounds, and there are almost no shots in which the background would be just stars and it would be really hard to do, so I don't think it would even be worth the effort. I checked all those shots for how possible it would be to do some other tweaks but most of them would be really difficult to deal with.

Yeah, that will be a bit of a pickle :-) I'm probably just gonna use GOUT V3 for those shots, I used GOUT for it in the previous PDE and I think the results were quite satisfactory. It works the same as it did in theaters in the original - they are quick shots with a lot of movement, so you don't really have time to notice the quality. Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

If they decide to release the originals, they will just use the GOUT again. Imagine: letterbox Blu-ray!

They couldn't possibly do that. While the GOUT was shite, it still fell within DVD standard (although the lowest border of it but that's what the 1st DVDs were - direct ports of old LD masters).

What they could do though, is they could use some shitty old prints and just scan them at 1080p (or even just 720p) without any cleanup or anything, which would have the same effect as the GOUT: "Here you go, here's what you wanted, the OOT on Blu-Ray. Look how shitty the original versions look compared to the SEs!"
