OK, guys, here's a very preliminary render of the beginning of the Mos Eisley sequence:
OK, guys, here's a very preliminary render of the beginning of the Mos Eisley sequence:
Thanks, Mike :-) Could you maybe offer some insight as to what the colours should be?
BTW, I think your signature needs a tweak, since OT stands for original trilogy.
Man, I was gonna write a lengthy response, but I'm just seriously tired of this colour argument. It never ends, whenever someone stops going on about the colours, someone else starts.

I think You_Too's version of Tarkin looks far better. The whole warm color scheme is becoming more clear with things like this brought up.
Um, You_Too's curves adjusted pic is much warmer than my original one...
Yeah, the xmas release is going to be impossible now, sorry. I clearly underestimated the amount of work that was still to be done. I don't even want to give another estimate, since it would really be just a wild guess at this point.
On a more positive note, I will hopefully soon post the next workprint within the next few days. It will actually be the first hour or so, from the beginning, because I made a lot of changes based on some of the observations made by you guys, so it's possible I could have made some new mistakes.
Thanks, yeah, that's exactly it. I mean I can see that there's a bit of green in his skintone but so there is in that Senator screening picture and the walls are quite green there and you need to find a ballance where everything looks at least pretty much the way it should.
And I'm really happy with how this particular scene turned out, except for the skintones being too orange in the shots before Tarkin and Vader come in, which I've already fixed now.
Yeah, sure, it looks a bit green when you compare it to that but now the walls are a bit too purple.
I loosely based my colour timing of that scene on this picture:
I know it may not be entirely correct but it seems to be the best reference we've got right now.
They often looked weird in movement, they had a kind of strobe effect, which was totally inconsistent with all the other films. And yeah, the pointy ends were pretty stupid too.

Here's one screencap from the tarkin scene on the workprint to show you what I mean. On my monitor his skin looks too yellow:
That looks like a perfectly natural skintone to me, actually a little too pale perhaps. And much less yellow than for example the current colour of my hand when I'm looking at it under the fluorescent tube light in my room.
Like I said, it's not really a stylistic choice on my part, I based my decisions on different sources and they all seem to point towards the colour timing of the 2004 version being too cold - case in point the Tantive 4 corridor, which generally has a strong push towards cold colours.
Yeah, I mean that I see what you mean and it is actually realistic that the glow would extend beyond the edges of the object in front of it. But that sure doesn't seem to be what Angel meant, since his picture doesn't show anything like that.
Oh, yeah sure, I see.
Oh, right, I've worked with MultiAVCHD before. Forgot it could author BDs, thanks for the tip :-)
RotS is probably most stupid and least realistic lightsabres ever looked IMO.
Yeah, sure, like I said, compared to the detail revealed in the dark parts it's totally minor :-)
Yeah, unfortunately, at the same time this resulted in even more white clipping (look at the reflection in R2's dome). But it's just a little and I feel that comparatively it is a small price to pay for all the detail recovered in the dark areas.
Well, actually, seeing it in comparison, I must agree with bkev that the colours may be a tad too warm (red mainly). The brightness is a whole other issue and it will definitely stay the way it is in the WP but I will consider making it slightly less red.
I don't see any difference at all in that picture Angel posted.
Simple, the 97SE was originally supposed to be SW only and when it was decided that they'd do ESB and ROTJ as well, they were just a little side project and a lot less work went into them. Also it's quite likely that the printing machines got better between 77 and 83, so the original wipes were higher quality in Jedi than in SW, so they didn't feel they needed to be redone.
@You_Too: Yeah, that frame's a mistake and that's exactly what happened, I was missing one frame, so I simply slowed it down by one frame but Premiere is stupid and always interpolates the first or last frame of the shot with the previous or next frame. But it's not necessary for you to render a new frame for me, I simply need to make sure that I cut the middle out and add one frame to that.
@AF: Wow, thanks, that's what I like my WP reviews to look like ;-)
Yeah, it fits together perfectly. I don't think there is a chance in the world that the German HDTV capture would not fit with the BD footage or the transition be even slightly noticeable - the German HDTV broadcasts were the same master and were such a really high quality that the Blu-Rays are hardly an improvement, except maybe in some fast moving shots or flashes and such and even there it would take a frame by frame comparison in order to discern any difference.
Now a different thing is when you start doing some heavy manipulation like You_Too and I did, then the compression that was hidden in the dark starts poking out in the HDTV broadcasts and it looks fine in the Blus. But with the kind of subtle changes you do to the colours, OMEN, I don't think you need to worry about the transition from BD to HDTV and back being noticeable at all.
As to the colours, they look quite nice, though I would personally go a bit warmer. But that is totally up to you of course :-)
To be honest, upon first viewing, most of the fixes were lost on me. Among a very few other things, I did notice that Vader's sabre actually goes through Luke's hand now.
But what is my favourite thing about this clip and perhaps about all I've seen from ESB:R so far is that shot when they're fighting on the bridge and in the original you can see the matte edges. I already loved it in the trailer and it was great to see it in full here. It may not look like anything that spectacular compared to some other shots Ady did but it's exactly the kind of fix that I like, because it's subtle yet it adds so much to the atmosphere and look of the shot. And I can tell you guys, that it must have been a lot more work than it may seem.
Oh, right, I see :-) I literally do see, since I just finished downloading it :-)
1080p? Is ESB:R going to be 1080p now?
Thank you, that would be great. It sucks but I actually don't know anyone who owns a BD burner. BD players and ROMs are finally becoming kind of commonplace in my country now, but burners, not so much :-/
And just FYI, the DVD9 AVCHD and large MKV are still on, but I thought a BD25 with menus and stuff would be pretty awesome too but I wouldn't have any way to burn it - and it's just an idea, I need to find out how hard it is to author BDs first.
