Well, it's a question of finding the right balance between brightness and contrast.
Well, it's a question of finding the right balance between brightness and contrast.
Thanks Mike for all the info and the kind words :-)
I don't know, I think Jaitea's picture is a bit over the top. But yes, what you'd need to do is to increase saturation. Unfortunately whenever I increase saturation over the original value in Premiere, it creates these weird colour artefacts as seen very clearly in this picture (though it affects all the shots to a certain degree):
I'm gonna try and pull the scene into AE and correct it there. Would you guys agree with me that it looks good in the WP until the point where the sand people attack Luke and that it need saturation boost until the wipe top Ben's hut?
Yeah, the 70mm scan is clearly faded and blown out and the GOUT has boosted reds.
And as to looking just as bad as the DVD and BD, I think you need to take another look:
DVD:
DeEd v2.0 WP:
Actually, even in 1977 that line was only included in the mono mix and since my release will offer all three original mixes (albeit in some cases reconstructions) the line shall be in the mono mix.
No, it just avoids automatic detection.
Actually, my main reference is still the GOUT and whenever there are other sources, I evaluate them as well. In that sunlight shot I was trying to get it to look more like in the GOUT.
Puggo Grande should not be used as a colour reference (and I'm sure Puggo would agree) since it's sourced from a fairly faded print.
Done :-)
Yeah, that might also have bothered Lucas. It would certainly explain why he had them change the sky in the SE ;-)
Yeah, free DL from RS is somehow really fast now and upload too, that's why I chose it in the end.
@builditup:
Thanks. I actually just did that and I must say even I didn't realize how much of a difference there was.
Check this out (v1.0 top v2.0 bottom):
I dare say the crushed blacks aren't even going to be an issue this time.
Dude, you'll need to be more specific here. Not much of difference between BD and DVD versions or BD and original versions or what? In picture quality, colour palette, changes?
OK, PMs sent. Let me know if I forgot someone.
It tried once but I remember having some trouble with it.
OK, in the end I decided to use RS. I'm going to start sending PMs.
So I'm uploading the WP to MU now but it's going really slowly, so how about I upload it to uloz.to, which would only take a few seconds and then provide MU mirrors for those who need them?
OK, the WP is encoded and actually even uploaded but I just skimmed through it and already found quite a few things I want to fix, so I decided to fix those things and re-encode.
@ Correlian77: The sunset is already brightened a lot compared to the SE and older video transfers were notoriously overbrightened, so I think this is a good compromise.
As to that 3P0 shot, the whole shot is totally f*cked up in the SE, it took a lot of effort to make it look anything like the other shots from that angle. Luckily it's very brief, so the little difference left is not very noticeable.
Thank you guys :-) I actually had to use animation to achieve the transition. And it is not perfect but I believe it's as good as it's gonna get.
OMG, that is so unbelievably hilarious. Any chance of releasing this as a simple audio track that I could mux with any video I choose?
Thanks guys :-) I'm going to encode the first hour workprint overnight btw. Any takers?
OK, here's a little something for you guys. It may not seem like much but believe me when I say it wasn't easy:

or
We actually already tried that and it didn't look too great. I'm going to try and come up with some compromise/alternative.
Hi :-) Welcome to the forum. Take a look around, you may find other interesting projects around here.
And yes, there's a Despecialized Edition v1.0 currently available and I'm working on a much improved version 2.0 using the BD as one of the sources.
Don't worry, I'm just gonna use the GOUT for that now and if you can get it for me when you gain access to your HDDs, I can just switch the files :-)
Hi, DJ, I'm glad to hear you decided to co-operate with You_Too, like I suggested :-) Sorry to hear about your computer, hope you'll get it resolved soon.
LOL :-)
No, not really. Or rather, not this much - all the stars will be brighter than in the SE simply because the film is being made brighter over-all but they can't be made this bright without rotoscoping everything else in the frame and I'm most definitely not doing that for every shot that has a starfield. I just wanted to restore these super-iconic shots to their full former beauty.
