Nope. Sorry to disappoint you.
Nope. Sorry to disappoint you.
Saw it. It is a nice documentary but the info is kind of generic - it would be interesting for someone who has no idea about the NFR and film preservation but most people here wouldn't learn much new from it.
Not much about SW in there either. In the short time they do talk about SW in the doc, they do use some footage from GOUT rather than the 2004 version (eg. the DS explosion), though the stardestroyer fly-over clip for example is the 2004 one and they don't mention anything about the necessity of preserving the original version in the doc itself, it's only mentioned very briefly in one of the extras.
This is pretty cool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0z_TU4Gw5o&feature=g-vrec&context=G2dc41f8RVAAAAAAAAAQ

The photo at the bottom has really horrible compression applied to it. Just sayin.
Yeah, I know, which is exactly how I got it (the whole shot not just that picture), so at this point I'm sticking with upscaled GOUT for that shot.
At least it has a decent BD release.
Not really, just that here's the latest advancement in upscaling the GOUT (top) compared to the latest advancement of the "higher quality source material" CatBus was probably referring to - already cleaned up quite a bit (bottom):
So I'm just saying that higher quality source for SW and ESB is still a problem at this point.
Here are some more of the jedi1.net scans retimed to look like the IB Tech print:

I don't think higher quality source material is a problem anymore for SW and ESB.
You'd think so, wouldn't you...
I'd have to start from scratch if I was to do it at 1080p.
That quote is very old and a lot has changed since, so yes, I am using BDs now and the reason I'm only working with 720p is that my computer simply couldn't handle After Effects and Premiere work at 1080p. And there is also the thing of scaling the SD elements to 1080p being a bit counter-productive.
I think it's just light polution from the telecine, which is only confirmed by n1's screenshots.
EDIT: Oh, right, it's there in n1's as well but there's no feathering to it, so probably what TServo said :-)
There definitely is some amount of blurring, it's just there's much more done than just that.
Reel 4:
Actually, while generally cropped less percentually, the BD is cropped more than the GOUT on the right side of the frame in many shots (but that much less on the left of course.)
I absolutely agree with this sentiment but this is a projection print, so it's got at least 3 extra layers of grain compared to the original negative.
LOL, didn't notice that. Though to be honest, I usually prefer to stay in when indulging in such activities ;-)
Well, not necessarily. I think what DE did there is just about perfect, because it gets it much closer to what it would have probably looked like on an earlier generation print.
Cool.
Yeah, I'm aware of all of the problems you guys pointed out, I'm gonna be able to fix some, but some will have to stay the way they are (the shaky background in the "door is locked" shot for example).
And yeah, I made the look and compositing of Falcon in the shot of it leaving Mos Eisley closer to the original.
Here's this shot from Jedi1.net...
...corrected to almost exactly the way it looks like on the IB Tech print (it was much easier to do with this than with the 04SE):
Yeah, while there is a surprising amount of green in the Death Star sequence, it's nowhere near as much as some of these shots on jedi1.net.
Thank you guys, you're awesome.
About Campbell, as far as I know, Lucas using his stuff when writing the first SW is a bit of a myth, actually I think Lucas hasn't actually read Campbell's works until after the 1st SW came out.
Great, thanks :-)
Awesome, thank you!
