Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

The latest AVHCD's m2ts file's date is Sept 11th 2012. There's only one version of ESB and ROTJ so far, so you don't need to worry about those.

So, anyway, the new version is almost done and having just successfully finished my last exam this semester, I'm hoping to have all the changes finalized soon. Now, here's how it's going to go down from there:

First I'm going to render out the AVCHD and watch it (it takes much less time to render due to the lower bitrate). If everything looks fine to me, I'm going to release the AVCHD and start working on the BD Authoring which could take some time - meanwhile, the AVCHD will serve as a bit of a workprint, so it'd be great if you guys could check it out even if you're going to get the BD eventually. For this reason, I'm going to stick with the v2.1 numbering for the AVHCD and if there are no problems found before the BD relase, then the BD is going to be v2.1 as well - if however I do do some fixes for the BD version, I'm going to call it v2.5 and release a new v2.5 AVCHD as well to avoid confusion.

Now, for the BD, I'm going to make the m2ts file downloadable separately from the rest of the BD structure, so those who want the whole BD can just download the rest of the BD structure and put the m2ts file in the right folder within the structure and burn to disc. Those who only want the mkv will only need download the m2ts file and remux it to mkv - I will put clear pictorial instructions on how to do these things in with the release.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

I didn't notice any adds but I only use torrents very occasionally, when I'm not at the school dorms.

Anyway, just for fun, I took a look at ESB v1.0 after not having seen it for ages and man is it bad; not only are the black levels pretty bad and there are some color issues but I think I'll have to redo all of the despecialized shots from scratch. Looking at it brought back a lot of memories - some of the shots that seemed so difficult back then would now take me like ten minutes to despecialize and make them look a lot better than they do in v1.0 - some of course will still be difficult but I'm confident I can do a lot better job on those too. I can't wait to get cracking on v2.0 of Empire. I have my last exam of this semester tomorrow and after that, I expect to be done with SW v2.5 quite soon and then I can start on this :-)

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Really? That'd be interesting to see. To be honest, I have serious doubts that a 16mm copy of a film could be less grainy than a BD sourced from 35mm (likely earlier generation than a release print) but I'm open to being surprised :-)

All I can say is that I enjoyed the movie on BD and didn't think the transfer was bad (it reminded me quite strongly of the Close Encounters BD transfer) but having no frame of reference for it I can't judge beyond my initial impression.

Edit: Oh and sorry about being off topic here. As for THX, I'm really looking forward to seeing msycamore's LD transfer, as I've never seen the film before and don't want to watch the butchered 2004 version first but at the same time I'd like to watch it in some at least decent transfer. But I of all people understand that real life comes first and sometimes this type of work can get really frustrating and it's hard to keep oneself motivated, so I just wanna say, msycamore, that your work on this is greatly appreciated and you just take as much time as you need! :-)

So, the BD version isn't the theatrical cut? And as for the transfer, I'm looking at it right now and while the blacks do look a little crushed, it sure as hell doesn't look DNRed - it's very grainy. And the contrasty blacks seem more like a part of the original cinematography, because while you can't see much detail in the dark areas, you can see different shades of black in them and a lot of grain. But having never seen a different version, I could of course be wrong.

So what do you guys think about this:

I think if done right it could be quite cool. Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan was one of the best (or more like least embarrassing) parts of the PT and with a good script this could be a cool SW western :-)

Yeah, no. All my Star Wars related clips on YouTube got deleted for copyright infringement and they threatened to block my account - imagine what would happen if I uploaded the whole film. And I'd prefer that no one else uploads it either. Plus the video quality on YouTube is seriously horrible, so even if it could be put there safely, I wouldn't really want it to be.

[fill in the blank] Just Died!
Time

OK, guys, you know what - this thread is so depressing - every time I get that email that someone posted in this thread, I'm like OMG, who died now? And usually it's someone I've never even heard of before. I was just gonna unsubscribe and go back to traditional media for my obituaries but then I read the linked article about Mr. Vlahos and found it so interesting that I decided to stay subscribed.

That wouldn't be bad actually. I'm almost through all of my blank BDs backing up other data, so I'd have enough space for the editing and I still want to backup the work data from v2.0 and v2.5 for possible later use. Right now this amounts to around 500-600GB, though if I go through it, I'm sure to discover a lot of duplicity and a lot of unnecessary files but at a guess, I'll need to back up at least 200GB and I'd prefer to back it up twice to make sure nothing is lost. So to do this I'm gonna need a hell of a lot of blank BDs. I can buy some of course but they're still pretty expensive, so some blanks would be a great help.
