George ruined the drama in his own stories.
Time
i had also thought about that some time ago and then tried to figure out how they could have done the prequel without spoiling the OT and this is what i came up with:

the PT could have shown the careers of two jedis who are friends, their names would not have been revealed (you could make up an explanation that when you enter the official jedi orders you lose your name or something like that).
at the end one of them turns into a sith but it is not clear which one (this could be done by the bad jedi already wearing some kind of mask when he does the killings). in this way you would start the OT without knowing who Obi Wan and Darth Vader truly are. the fact that one of them had children would not be mentionned, maybe only a couple of scenes where one of them is shown flirting with a girl (Padme) could indicate in retrospect that this was Luke and Leia's mother. also, Yoda would not appear in this trilogy, so that his foolimg Luke on Dagobah still keeps its effect.

i came up with this in 5 minutes so i guess there can be continuity problems with it, but if developed more i think it could be made to fit with the OT.

Remember when everyone hated Return of the Jedi?
Time
another thing that bothers me is how much aunt beru and uncle owen have aged. they looked just over 20 in the PT but in ANH they are at least sixty, even if only 18 years have passed. moreover owen talks about anakin as if he had really known him, and not just seen him for 5 minutes in AOTC
and obiwan ages a lot as well. you could say that maybe it's the conditions on the planet that do this but Luke has lived there all his life and he does look his age.

but to go back to the topic, i saw the trilogy first when i was in my teens and for a long time i really didn't like ESB. only wathced it as a bridge to ROTJ, which i liked best because of the uber happy ending. then the ewoks started getting on my nerves and i noticed how much more stuff there is in ESB than i noticed before, and it quickly became my new favourite. guess a lot of people go through this evolution.
for the PT, i've seen phanytom menace only once, attack twice and sith twice as well, and i'm planning to leave it this way. i've seen the clone wars cartoons, which i thought where not that badm i liked the character of the evil sith woman-alien (can'y remember name) and the sequence where anaking goes trhough a ritual and has a vision of his arm destroying everybody. really foreshadows what will happen (maybe even too explicit...) but still, the only ones i watch over and over again are those of the o-ot. watched the SE once, still trying to forget that experience...

Why all the negative coments about george lucas?
Time
from what you write i sense that you would agree with the "auteur" theory, which says that the director is the only creator of his/her films, and that only in such directors can one find a consistency of themes, imagery and mise-en-scene in the movies.
but, those who disagree with this theory say that it does not apply because a director, unlike a writer, is NOT the only person working on a movie. they need a screenwriter, a set designer, a cinematographer, actors, effect coordinator, costume designer and so on and so on.
so, what about those people? do you think they are happy about those changes? they have been working hard on the original fils and then have to see how Mr. Lucas thanks to CGI destroys most or maybe even all of their work, because he his not happy with "his" movies? the most blatant example is Sebastian Shaw being replaced by Hayden Christensen. or contardicting Harrison Ford's interpretation of Han by making him shoot only in self-defense. or Rick Baker whose puppets were obviously not good enough for Mr. Lucas that he had to add CG cartoons to a lot of scenes.
It's not only disrispect of the fans, who liked the movies just as they were and who brought Mr. Lucas where he is now, it's disrespect for all his collaborators who helped him out a lot since his involvment in most of the original trilogy was kept to a minimum.

i do think that some of the comments here are a bit harsh towards him, but for me it's just because i am deeply disaapointed. it gives me the impression that the greatness of the OOT was only a fluke, just random circumstances related to the fact that the SFX were not "good enough" back then.

(sorry for all the theoratical blabla at the start but i have a film studies exam on saturday, thought it would be a good oppprtunity for some revision )

End of SE ROTJ...
Time
Originally posted by: Yoda Is Your Father

In my imagined backstory that I made up when I was about 8 years old and it was the nineteen-eighties, this is what I came up with:

"A young jedi named darth vader killed and murdered your father" - this makes me think that obi-wan's student, Darth vader, was young and inexperienced, and he fell to the darkside before he finished his jedi training, and therefore did not know that when somebody is truly one with the force, as obi-wan was, they disappear at death. Vader thought he was pretty hot shit, but he was a rank amatuer compared to Obi-wan, who truly understood the force, the universe, the way things are. Vader on the other hand gave in to evil and took the quick and easy path.

Of course, that was just a logical backstory based on the info we are given by the OT characters and has no relation to the actual backstory we were given in the PT. My imagined backstory had no 'jedi council' or any of that stuff. The jedi were more like wanderers, travelling around doing good heroic deeds.

exactly what i thought before seeing the prequels. that is why i dislike them so much: because they destroy my image of the original trilogy. all that midi-chlorian crap demistifying the jedi myth (it's only biology now...), the jesus subtext (making anakin special and not just a young person who turned bad, which happens also in the 'normal' world and hence is easier to relate to) and what i hate the most is Padme dying at child birth. totally destroys the emotional impact of the scene in ROTJ when Luke asks Leia about he rmother. now i know that it's not padme she's talking about, it's just Mrs. Organa, so Luke is not hearing about his own mother but just a random stranger with no direct association to him.

but to get on topic again: imo hayden as ghost was just a gimmick to anticipate ROTS. what does GL care that it does not make any sense if he can make more money out of it. again it destroys my personal theory: i thought that every jedi could do that, but then again, i also thought jedis were rare.

also, i don't agree that he looks young because that is when anakin died. anakin made the conscious decision to go to the dark side when young, so he shouldn't look like that as a force ghost. he managed to join the good side again when old, after becoming aware that the dark side ruined his life, and thus he gets rid of his darth vader persona and becomes an old jedi. that is his final image of himself and so that is how he presents himself to Luke (i like to think that one can choose one's appearance as a ghost). why would he like to be reminded of the moment when he made that fatal decision?

What scene in the (O-)OT do you hate/dislike the most?
Time
i don't think anyone as mentionned this yet, and it's just a detail but i think it was wrong to add the tentacles to the sarlaac pit. for me it was much scarier to imagine the people falling in there dying by being slowly digested whilst still alive, must be an agonising and very drawn-out death with no hope of escape. now with the tentacles it just looks silly, making it more aggressive.

also, when R2 falls into the swamp: why oh why did they feel the need to change Luke's line from "you're lucky you don't taste good" to "you're lucky to get out of there"? the latter is so bland, dull, boring and OBVIOUS. of course he's lucky to get out of there, or would you prefer to rust away into mud for the rest of your existence?? the original line was a bit cheesy, granted, but it is funny. and it shows that Luke has a sense of humour.

and of course, the han shoots second, the extended musical scene at the cantina, the new song at the end of ROTJ,the silly sound effects (which are also too much ised in the prequels, i know star wars is supposed to not be entirely serious but those sounds are just too stupid...)

What are you going to do with your SE discs?
Time
please guys don't start bashing each other! what i always liked about this forum is that the bashing is relatively mild here (and for an internet forum it's rare!) so let's not go there.
i really like the idea of sending back just to see the headlines in the newspapers, but i can see how it seems like a waste and that better things could be done with it. also, it is true that it could make GL hate the original trilogy even more...

BUT releasing it only as a bonus is a sign of disrespect. they might as well give it its own release, since they are going through the effort of transfering it to disc and of packaging it anyway. this seems like an arrogant gesture, like the people at Lucasfilm are only throwing a bone at us to keep us in check. that is why sending the useless dvds back would show him. still, it's better than nothing at all...

Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park'
Time
I know this is probably only between you, Jaster, and Chaltab, but i'd like to put my two cents in it:
first, you put a lot of emphasis on chaltab's comment that his family should disown him. now, in my forum "experience", i've noticed that people tend to exaggerate when they feel strongly about something, so i do not think that he meant it in the sense that if he could sell his soul to the devil he would wish for Hayes' family to disown him. i could be wrong though, it's just the impression i got.
second, well it is blatant hypocrisy on Hayes' part, even if it's true all the facts are not known. South Park is a show that satirises EVERYTHING. not only religions, but also celebrities, politicians, ways of life etc. Hayes has worked long enough for the show to know this. Many many many groups have been offended by things South Park stated, Hayes is not the first one.
BUT I agree when you say that he might have been blackmailed into doing it. Still, he could just have quit the show, giving other reasons maybe. and if scientology demanded he should say openly why, then he could have toned his comment down.
I think this discussion maybe started to focus too much on the cult, and not on the actual news, I understand that is what makes you angry.
Although, I have to say that it IS weird that he waited a couple of months to resign...I don't know what to make of that, maybe his scientologist friends started to ostracise him and make him feel guilty.

if i remember correctly, The Simpsons did make fun of a religious sect once in "The Joy of Sect". it wasn't really about scientology but the cult leader pretended he was building a space ship and then he ran off with it with all the money he made from the followers but the space ship (which was only a bicycle i think) broke down and he got caught.

and the trivia bit on www.tv.com says that "It's very ironic that Bart would make that "Church, cult, cult, church" comment, since he's voiced by a member of the Church of Scientology (Nancy Cartwright)."

that episode has some really good quotes:

"Rev. Lovejoy: This new so-called religion is nothing but a pack of weird rituals and chants designed to take away the money of fools. Now lets say the Lord's prayer 40 times, but first lets pass the collection plate."

"Lisa: It's great that we can all think for ourselves again.
Announcer on TV: You are watching FOX.
Family (robotically): We are watching FOX"

The worst movies ever!
Time
BTTF is my childhood classic too. ahhh...the memories...
(changing my sig now just to honour it.)

there's only one movie i really hate: "Van Wilder" (sometimes called "Party Animals"). wathced it at a friend of mine and i just cringed through it. so disgusting, immature (and that's coming from someone who actually enjoyed "American Pie" a little) and full of stereotypes.

another movie i can't bear to see is Cronenbergs "The Fly". it's not that i don't like it, but just the thought of slowly turning into a fly, it kinda traumatises me. we had to watch it in my film class last year and i went there but i had to walk out of it after he did the experiment. which is really a shame because it's supposed to be a great movie but it would be torture for me to see it.

BTW, also thought that Animatrix was pretty good. i though that the movies should have been about those stories though, they were more interesting than what they did in the sequels.

hehe, that so reminds me of 'American Psycho'

to get back on track: they also made a sequel of that movie, with Mila Kunis (?) from "that 70's show". haven't actually seen it but must be godawful, a sequel was so unnecessary for that film...Patrick Bateman is not even in it!

Mal does kinda shun her a bit, constantly calling her a whore but it's part of the love-hate thing that's going on between them.

i also noticed that Simon changed a bit. not only from his develpment over time but also from the pre-credits sequence: he almost looks like an action hero there and from the series that's the lastthing i would say about him!
also, i had the feeling in the series that Simon and Mal were becoming kinda friends but their dialogue at the beginning is pretty harsh. and i feel that in general the chracters have been neglected in favour of action, but i guess that they couldn't do much about it in a movie destined for the cinema.
and about the time line thing: from the story - especially if you consider the time Inara would need to settle in the school and Book would need to establish a mission - i would say that at least 3 to 4 months must have been in-between. but i'm not sure, haven't been paying much attention to that when i was watching it.

yeah i was a bit disappointed that the blue hands guys didn't come up in the movie at all. i thought that'd be one of the story lines the movie would complete. same for Book: they implied a couple of times that he wasn't what he seemed (like when he is wounded and the alliance ship takes him to be cured) but nothing was said about that in 'serenity'.

haven't read the comics yet, but i really want to!

greencapt: what happened between the tv show and the movie has already been told in the serenity comics so it's not very probable that they could reuse that timeframe

i think mal is the main one in the tv show, in the cast pics he is mostly in the foreground and episodes like 'out of gas' clearly show that. after all he assembled the crew.
but i can understand how people could think River is more important in the movie, it's probably the marketing's fault (on the cover of the dvd River is in the foreground on the front cover, she's twice on the back cover and she is on the pic on the spine). which is partly true imo, since she does trigger the event in the movie but eventually it is Mal who 'saves the day'. so i guess it would definitely have been about Mal.

as a side note, in the introduction to the movie Whedon mentions the films website and calls it www.cantstopthesignal.com, but now if you type it it redirects you to www.serenitymovie.com. my guess is they wanted to call it that at the beginning but maybe it was too obscure to find on google so they changed to the more straightforward url.

sorry for resurrecting this thread but i only got to watch the movie this week (in UK the dvd came out last monday) and there is something i was wondering about and i'd like to know what you guys think:

MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD

YE HAVE BEEN WARNED

HERE GOES:

so, at the end their big mission is to get that recording aired all over the 'verse to expose what the Alliance wants to hide. to do that they need the help of Mr. Universe. It struck me that you could say that the recording could represent the movie itself and the Alliance Fox. For the internet 'browncoats' Fox is the bad guy because it cancelled the tv show. the movie got financial help from Universal (aka Mr. Universe?? plus he got easily bribed with money...and we know that money is all important to production studios) moreover, Mal could not use the main console (the television medium?) but had to go to another unit (cinema?) to get his message broadcasted.
i'm the first to say that it's a bit far-fetched, but the similarities are striking, don't you think?

what popped in my mind reading the title was "grease 2", have not seen the whole of it, switched channels when they started singing about bowling...BOWLING!
i think what they did with that list is too mention the movies made only to cash in on the original, especially of the original didn't require a sequel or didn't offer a premise for one at all. i mean, Speed 2, how likely is it that Annie find herself in a hijacked public transport twice! (first the buw and then the boat...)

Syndrome Killer
Time
i read in your other thread that you're offended by the bad things Syndrome does. But you say you like Disney movies?? the baddies in there are just as evil! example, in Lion King, Scar gets his own brother killed and lets hyenas chase Simba (his nephew!) AND he makes Simba believe his father's death was his own fault. THAT is terrible. and it's just one example, i could write a whole book about disney villains.
