The issue is unequal treatment of equal male and female characters.

But are they (Rey and Luke, I assume) the same? I hardly think so.

At the risk of continuing a debate that I have to keep pointing out has been debated endlessly on this site for two years now, I never said they’re the same at all. And I have no interest in whatever that video is trying to say.

Okay, then why are we arguing? To use your own argument, those statements are at odds with one another. And I’ll dismiss anything you say to justify it.

Cool story, other than the fact that I don’t even know what you’re trying to say. But that’s ok because I don’t care. For the millionth time, the Mary Sue debate is endless, pointless, and worthless.

You said they were being unequally treated based on gender alone, which I disagree with. If you didn’t want to bring up that debate, then you shouldn’t have said that. Easy. But this is hardly the thread for serious discussion.

Go back and read what I said again.

"The issue is unequal treatment of equal male and female characters."
If Rey and Luke are not equal, if they are not being unequally treated based on gender, then that statement has no relevance.

Go back and read the whole conversation now, including everything I said, not just focusing on the one sentence.

I don’t want to touch a debate revolving around what terms are offensive to some and not to others. There’s nothing to gain there.

Does the Darth Sidous reference annoy anyone else? I wonder if there is a take with Mark Hamill saying “The Emperor” instead.

It annoys me too.

Where Sith are concerned does one refer to them by their public disguise name, their true Sith name, or the title they bestowed upon themselves as they crushed the galaxy for two decades? Luke calling him the Emperor now that he’s dead and gone would be honoring a despot.

It’s a prequel reference, and I don’t like those. The line would have made just as much sense without it. Also who told Luke? It’s weird coming out of his mouth.

Holy shit guys, will the Mary Sue debate never end?

The ST is clearly more interested in Rey’s internal and emotional journey of self growth, than in her physical development of powers. Some people are okay with that, some aren’t. Mary Sue doesn’t have anything at all to do with it.

How do they show such a journey?

I am not going to explain these movies for you.

Thanks.

“There has been an awakening.”

Why does it have to come from her parents?

It is kind of lame storytelling to just have things ‘appear’ out of the blue. - Why is Rey so powerful ‘cause she is’ is not very satisfying.

Agreed. Setup and payoff. We have the setup, but no payoff.

Kind of like in ESB where Han is frozen?

There’s still another movie to go.

No, not like that. I’m not talking about unresolved plot threads, I’m talking about how the Last Jedi takes things that were set up in TFA and resolves them in a way by saying it doesn’t matter. The twist is there is no twist. Snoke’s role makes no sense and is unsatisfying, Rey’s force vision makes no sense and is unsatisfying (I like that she’s random but I don’t like its execution), and so on.

The Last Jedi doesn’t even really leave much to look forward to. Everything that was set up to be important in TFA is resolved here, and leaves nothing but Kylo Ren either being killed off or redeemed or both for the finale.

I left this film feeling very conflicted about it, there is some great stuff and some not so great stuff, but as time goes on I find less and less to like about it.

I agree with most of these changes except for why remove the mention of the emperor

As people who enjoy the prequels they get a nice reference

As for the people who haven’t seen the prequels it adds more back story to Anakin and the emperor

I don’t like the prequels, and I don’t think Luke referring to the Emperor as “Darth Sidious” makes one lick of sense. I don’t even remember him being referred as that in the prequels themselves, only in promotional material like action figures and video games. It’s the only explicit prequel reference, and I’d rather not be reminded of them.

In regards to the Phasma fight, I thought it was another unnecessary prolongation in a film with too many unnecessary scenes. I’d rather Phasma be killed off in TFA than randomly reappear here only to do nothing of consequence. Sure, as Dom (I think) pointed out, it’s important to show Finn fight his literal past, but we got that already, and he does it again 20 minutes later anyway. Phasma is a useless character. I like the idea of their fight being repurposed in a TFA edit (not sure how it could be accomplished, though).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - The Dark Cut (* unfinished project *)

You make a lot of cuts I’d rather not make, but bring up a lot of things I’d like to get rid of too. You wouldn’t mind if I borrowed some elements of your cutlist? I had forgotten a few of these. Our edits will most likely be completely different otherwise, as I’m not planning on reordering the scenes and cutting all humor nearly as much.

I’m willing to help with some VFX stuff (like fixing the crate or splicing shots that almost but don’t quite cut together, etc.).

That would be invaluable, thank you.

I’ll be cutting these. Currently developing my cutlist. Expect a dedicated thread pretty soon.

I look forward to it. As Phasma will be gone entirely from my edit, those lines are too.

I’m considering this cut as well but haven’t made up my mind yet. How you would you execute it?

As far as I can tell, her only important scene is when Hux is talking to her about DJ, so maybe I’ll just alter the dialogue and have Hux talk to someone else, like Finn, or cut it completely. As you have repeatedly demonstrated, you have a much better memory of the film than I do at the moment, I don’t recall anything of hers that can’t simply be cut or cropped or painted out.
