The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **

My biggest issue with this whole scene is that, at least in my two viewings, I didn’t notice a single shot fired by the resistance pilots. There certainly appeared to be guns on the skimmers, but no shots were taken. Not at the walkers, not at the ties, nothing. Correct me if I’m wrong, though. I didn’t notice it my first viewing, but after seeing it a second time, this popped into my head right after the scene had ended.

Those things were falling apart. I doubt they worked.

Also I have no problem with the movie having a Chinese character if that character is required for the story and the role is specifically written as having a Chinese or Star Wars equivalent background or more importantly, the best actor for the role just happens to be Chinese. But Rose’s character very much feels like she’s only there partly to put an extra tick in the box of “actor diversity” and that’s a slight to the actress herself who does a good job even if I find the character pointless and lacking in many aspects. It also makes me wonder alongside a number of other recent examples (that are not connected with SW) whether there is something to the talk about an increase in China’s influence on Hollywood due to the amount of money they are investing into it (and therefore a need to appease that demographic)…though in that case, one would have expected Matt Damon’s character in ‘The Great Wall’ to be cast with a Chinese actor, though I’m also sure the choice of Matt Damon was more in line with audience pull than authentic characters for a movie set in China.

This would all be a great point if she wasn’t born in America to Vietnamese parents.

Actually it wouldn’t be a great point, in fact it’s ridiculous, but you somehow managed to make it worse.

This aside, they were not casting specifically for an Asian actress.

Huh, if that’s true, color me surprised, considering how many important people were here for this diversity question.

In other news, I’ve suddenly fallen pretty hard for a guy. He’s probably straight, but even if he isn’t, any relationship I pursue with him would result in my execution and subsequent trip to hell. I continue to daydream nonetheless, and hope God has mercy on my soul whenever I do die.

I wish you the best of luck because you never know, it might come to pass that he isn’t straight. It’s bloody awful falling for someone you suspect doesn’t feel the same way. Part of you wants to be optimistic and not be too hard on yourself but another part of you is just protecting you from humiliation and disappointment.
My advice for what it’s worth is to be a great friend first and foremost. Never expect anything. And one day you will be astonished by someone who wants what you have to offer.

I agree.

I wish you all the very best.

Rose is a better character than Lando was. Barely. But still.

Seriously? Lando was a pretty pivotal character and really set all the events in motion for the 2nd half of the movie. He partnered with Vader to trap Luke and in the process got Han nearly killed and shipped off to Jabba (remember?)

No Lando: no cloud city, no luke/vader duel (no “I am your father”), no carbonite, no Jabba, no reason for rotj basically.

What exactly did Rose do that was so important (besides setting free horse-llama things and preventing Finn from committing an act of selflessness)?

Most of the movie doesn’t exist without Rose.

That’s not necessarily a good thing…

I don’t know if this has been brought up in previous pages. Doesn’t anyone else find it bothersome that Rose doesn’t utter a word of complaint to Poe for getting her sister killed?

Huh. Good point. I guess what’s done is done and she’s more concerned with keeping everybody else alive.

I have been rejected by this wonderful person time and time again. I thought I was finally over her, but now that I can see her every week (in a friendly group), I fear this has reawakened my feelings towards her. There’s nothing I can do. All I know is I like being around her under any circumstances. Goddammit.

Putting this here. I think we’re better friends now than ever, but I can’t get her out of my mind. I wish we had more opportunities to do things together, but if I went and asked her, I’m almost certain it’d be taken the wrong way. Thing is I don’t know many people here, I recently moved, so I’d like to hang on to the friends I have.

When I talk to my 14yo nephew about the Star Wars movies, he’s not really that big a fan and has a hard time remembering which Episode number goes by which subtitle. At one point, he asked me why I don’t just call them by their episode numbers, and I said that it wasn’t until the prequels came out that their numbers even were on the box or that Star Wars was marketed as A New Hope.

Then I showed him images of OT posters and VHS boxes to prove my point.

God those were awful posters.

We haven’t gotten anything better since for an official release.

Almost every official theatrical poster since has been better.

I was referring to those films specifically. The DVD covers were so much worse, and the Blu-rays either had Jake Lloyd or were really lazy.
