I think Superman is a perfect film. No superhero movie has come close to matching what defines being what a superhero is since, and it’s been 40 years! To see you rate it so lowly is baffling, to say the least. That’s a rating I’d give to something made by people who had no idea what they were doing, which this so clearly wasn’t. It’s a beautiful film, with wonderful performances, a fantastic score, and a lovely, imaginative world. It deserves better.

But no, it makes Superman look silly, so 2/10.

New 4K releases - but are they any good?

I’m currently working my way through the Jurassic Park 4k set. The original film looks stunning. The second one looks pretty good too. There’s a massive drop off in quality with the third one though, it looks worse than a lot of 1080p blu-rays I’ve seen. Haven’t watched Jurassic World yet, but it’s a recent enough movie that I’d assume it’s original master would yield a fine UHD disc.

The third one was basically a direct-to-video kind of movie that ended up in a theater anyway, right? No one really seems to care about it.

I’ve been out of the loop for a few months, but I just have to say this is probably going to be my preferred version.

I do have a suggestion for you: Is it possible to re-edit the fight to sync the quiet part of the score around 1:40ish, to 1:50ish, where Rey and Ren are both struggling? I feel if it can be synced where the score picks up again when Rey drops her lightsaber, it could feel seamless. Maybe. I am a fan of the idea, but I’m not sure it can feel completely seamless.

I’m glad he posted to assure us he was okay the last time he took a major break. Well, I suppose this is an extension of that same break. It sounds like he’s been really busy with all that moving, finding a new job, all that.

If he doesn’t post for the rest of the year, then I’ll start getting worried.

Retro Gaming - a general discussion thread

I’m not sure if the N64 will get a Mini. The NES classic hasn’t even come back in stock yet. And the appeal of those systems is partly how simple those games are. They’re great for introducing new players to video games. The N64 hasn’t really aged all that well, and its controller… less so. I’d rather the Switch just get the Virtual Console.

I’m glad we’re getting the wood grain back. But Atari games are still dirt cheap. I can get an original Atari and a couple dozen games for half the price of this new one. So, if that’s all it’s offering, I’m not too interested.

What.

It was weird in Star Wars. I don’t expect people to just casually French kiss.

You know people actually do that, right?

And people have sex, shit, and piss, but I don’t want it in Star Wars. Again, I just thought it was weird. It didn’t ruin the film for me.

And if Darth is his title, why his he repeatedly referred to as “Lord Vader”?

Unless I’m forgetting something, no one ever refers to him as Lord Darth Vader.

This conversation should be saved for the ages. I can’t believe I never noticed that.

This was as lazy as I thought it would be.

So, this takes place before Star Wars, which was heavily influenced by World War II, right? Uhh… what came before WWII? World War One!
But at least they executed it well.

I liked how they incorporated the way Lando pronounces Han’s name.

I breathed a sigh of relief when the comic relief characters died. The rest of the humor from everybody else was dreadful.

Darth Maul is pointless. Also Crimson Dawn, get it, cause Darth Maul is red.

The kiss Han’s mentor got. Why? Seemed strangely intimate, but also casual and forced.

Everything that made Han, Han, happened in a couple months. How he got his name, his gun, were really stupid. But Han doesn’t really act like the Han we know in the OT. We’re expected to believe he’s the same guy by the end of the movie?

Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover were good, not great. When following after Ford and Billy Dee’s iconic portrayals, that’s enough to make it work I guess.

I just feel completely indifferent to it. I didn’t expect anything, and I received nothing. So, mission accomplished?

It was way better than young Indy getting his hat, whip, scar, and fear of snakes all in a few hours! 😛

But that wasn’t what the entire movie was about.

The Place to Go for Emotional Support
Time

Ash, Possessed, my heart goes out to you. You’re decent guys, and it sucks that you’re having a rough go at it, as Jason might say (the phrase felt right). I can relate to both of you, to a degree. So, at least we’re not alone in being alone.

I’m going to have to agree with mfm above, though. If you spend your time seeking the affection of someone who isn’t able to give it, for one reason or another, you’re just going to get hurt. Depending on the circumstances, remaining friends can be feasible, but before that happens, you have to move on.

Sorry if that came off as a bit of a lecture. It just sucks to see you hurt so much.

I’ve tried to get the 4K version running on MPC-HC with madVR, but whatever I do, I get really choppy playback. Any pointers, or should I just download the 1080p version?

I’ve got a new 4K TV I’d love to play this on, and although it’s being said there is little difference between the two, I’d love to watch it in its native resolution.

What are your computer specs?

Windows 8.1
CPU: Intel 8-core i7-4710HQ @ 2.50 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M
HDD: 1TB HGST HTS721010A9E630
RAM: 12 GB

It is a laptop, as well. Is it my GPU?

I believe so. I don’t think it supports hardware accelerated HEVC playback.

Yikes.

Grab mkvtoolnix and remux the file, other people have had success with smoother playback after doing that.

I’ll try this, thanks!

In light of all the comments saying there is no difference between the 4K version and the HD version, I just downloaded the HD version. Perfect playback, and I’m glad I don’t seem to be missing anything.
