Dragonwyck (1944) – A rewatch. I loved this movie when I first saw it last year, and had the opportunity to see it again with the release of a new Blu-ray. Vincent Price adopts the persona he’d be associated with for the rest of his career for the first time here, and Gene Tierney realizes the difference between dreams and reality. First time director Joseph L. Mankiewicz directs for the first time, and makes a strong first impression. Splendidly gothic fare!
The Greatest Showman
Sounds bad. But everyone I know in real life has only said great things. I can’t imagine why, but then again none of them really care about movies.
What I want to know is what he’s doing with a bundle of sticks.
Did that one have a built-in stylus?
It did/does!
I know a guy who knows a guy who makes their own soap.
Why do people find this to be good news? Disney monopolizing the industry isn’t good.
Superheroes.
Warb, let me draw you a map as to how terribly thought out this was.
MAP:
R O A D
[CASINO]–[JAIL]–[BASEBALL STADIUM]–[FOOTBALL STADIUM]
This stupid half-finished jail in the middle of Detroit is finally being torn down, after sitting there for most of the decade. It was a physical monument to the incredible mismanagement of the city (the thing was built before Detroit filed for bankruptcy). What a relief.
I must be old fashioned to be shocked at hearing a young girl drop about a dozen or so F bombs at a companion passing outside in the street tonight. Used to only take one to get the soap!
Yeah, that gets on my nerves too. When the word is used in between every other word, it kind of loses its effect. Like, it’s supposed to emphasize something, but when you overuse it I kind of just tune it all out.
All of the parts. The whole.
Wow.
Indeed. Still, that was due to incompetence and negligence, not as some kind of terrible plot. I don’t think this guy would’ve handled it any better, and he doesn’t seem as, uh, sane.
The deaths from the crisis were originally reported as around 19, but this says it could be as high as 119.
Flint is a mess, unfortunately. The fact that the problem has gone on for over a year, let alone four, is a disgrace. Michigan’s governor can’t run again, and the seat is up for grabs this year. I’ve looked at the candidates and most of them are not great. One of the Republican candidates, and a popular one, wants to increase spending to fix roads. That’s all well and good, but he also wants to eliminate the income tax entirely. What? A bit contradictory, I’d think. On top of that, he is pushing for a Pro-Life license plate, something Snyder vetoed “disgracefully”. This guy might win!
$5,625 for film stock
And thus, the end of the digital v. film debate.
I’ve always liked this poster for the way it credits the two main stars.
m_s0 gets it. That’s what I meant. The writers of the show need to be confident in their own ideas, not worry about the fans, and not worry about how to target some demo. Discovery, from everything I’ve seen, does not seem very confident, especially with the very different tone I’m getting from the S2 trailer.
This is very different from TNG, which also had a shaky few first seasons, but those were as a result of someone (cough Roddenberry cough) perhaps being a little too confident in their ideas. The issue there was that it created an environment in which the really good ideas were not able to grow and be fostered on the show. I’m not convinced there’s a similar situation here with Discovery at all. It feels far too cynical.
maybe.
I’ll also take this opportunity to remind everyone that when moderators post content, they’re posting as themselves and not as representatives of the site.
By content, you mean opinions and such, not “Let’s get back on topic”? Obvious question is obvious, but I’d like a little more clarification on this point if possible.
Pixar’s last masterpiece.
But why call it Star Trek then, if you change so many things that it doesn’t ‘feel’ as Star Trek anymore?
That’s not what I said at all. But good things don’t come from a committee.
Ever heard of a writer’s room?
Ever heard of focus groups?
Suddenly, everyone who’s on the opposite side is at best potentially a commie/toxic, or at worst guilty by association.
That’s always been a fear of mine.

Eh, I don’t know. The only way to truly be creative and tell new stories is to stop listening to the fans and go your own way. The only problem is the people in charge of this show didn’t have a clear vision, and it felt like a desperate attempt to be “edgy and cool”, at the expense of the source material. When that failed, of course they would look at the other show and try to ape its success. This show is a joke.
Full disclosure: I have not watched a single episode of either show, lmao. And from everything I’ve seen, that doesn’t look to be changing soon.
