4K restoration on Star Wars

Yes, I think people will care. Most people want to see the original films, but enhanced for modern home theater entertainment purposes. What Disney should do is release an OOT set with with two options for each film:

1) Cleaned up OOT ... basically what the SE versions should have been all along. No Greedo shooting. No rock in front of R2. No CGI Jabba. No CGI inserts AT ALL. No Boba Fett mugging. No Luke screaming. No Jedi Rocks. No Hayden Ghost. etc. But with the new composite look above.

This is what I think most people want. Just an up-to-date modernized HD home viewing experience of the original movies.

2) OOT Theatrical Release

For the purists, who should absolutely have the option to watch the theatrical versions, matte lines and all.

Kind of like how the 2006 release had the SE as the feature and GOUT as an extra bonus, purists' best shot is to get a cleaned up OT as the feature with OOT as an added bonus. jmo

Kind of like what they did with the Star Trek TOS Blu-ray sets!

I was just now watching the duel, and when Darth Maul ignites his lightsaber, the audio for the blade on the left comes out of the right channel and the for the blade on the right the left channel. It seems that you may have your channels backwards.

I just watched it to confirm, and from what I could tell, the blade audio was coming from both channels. Perhaps it is a problem with the source? I have no idea how the channels could be backwards, but LucasFilm made the same mistake in 2004 for the DVDs...

The discussion is pertinent to the topic and there are other threads if you don't have anything to contribute or don't find reading what is being contributed to your interest.

Some of us come into this thread expecting a discussion on Star Wars stereotypes and instead find a discussion about Kahn.

And some of us are actually furthering conversation in general instead of filling the thread with complaints. This is what real conversation does. It weaves in and out of a topic as other similarly relevant topics are brought to mind and subsequently mentioned.

I think TV's Frink just hates Trek.

Looks like the torrent is 720x480 MPEG-2 with PCM sound

That is correct, it is showing up like that. However, when I play it the resolution is closer to the standard 640x480, so I have no idea where that number is coming from.

What I meant is that each of those six images have not been upscaled or manipulated in any way. Though, now that I look at it, it looks like that website has indeed resized the image, even though it said it wouldn't.

Here is the crawl, showing off the shortcomings of my capture:

Here is the duel, sometimes cutting off Obi-Wan or Qui-gon:

And here's one thing I thought was weird, Qui-gon talking out of frame. Just another consequence of P&S:

While that may be true I defy anyone to watch TPM and not see those ethnic stereotypes.

I think George in his eagerness to evoke all things Buster Crabbe thought he could use them if he transfered them away from the original human model and onto an alien.

Jabba was the sort of fat sultan that Frank Thring used to play, Yoda was the oriental sage and martial arts trainer, the Ewoks were any generic African tribe from a Tarzan movie so George thought he could give us Stepin Fetchit, some shifty trade grabbing Japs and a Semitic child slaver in much the same way.

The world had moved on (even from the 1980s). Sir Alec got into trouble for browning up in A Passage to India where nobody really cared in Lawrence of Arabia.  Episodes of Doctor Who are routinely branded racist for using yellow face (ignoring the limited number of oriental actors available to the BBC at the time).

So come 1999 one would hope George would have realised there are some things you just cant get away with anymore. It doesn't stop the depiction of women and ethnic Sikhs in Star Trek Into Darkness as being equally behind the times.

Cumberbatch Khan was supposed to be Sikh?

The character of Khan is, and due to all the fun timeline things, he is still technically the same Khan from Wrath of Khan, who was Sikh.

 *puts on glasses/cue nerd voice*

Well, actually, the same Khan from "Space Seed", since the Khan from "Wrath of Khan" had it out for Kirk, while STID Khan didn't even know who he was.

Getting back on track, here are some images from the P&S VHS. Let me know if there are any specific parts you want to see. They are presented in their native resolution. The first image is... ironic?

If you guys know of any way to get a better capture of the video, let me know.

Handman, there's a cap of the Jap widescreen LD on the spleen if that interests you, it's the theatrical cut and has japaneese subtitles throughout (subtitles are in the borders not the picture). It's pretty close to DVD quality.

Thanks for letting me know. As ray_afraid pointed out, the Pan and Scan release differs a little from the original theatrical cut, and the Pan and Scan-iness offers a possible nostalgia factor. I'll still offer this to anyone who wants it, though there are other options, as you said.

If it's deinterlaced, I'd be interested in seeing it on the spleen.

Tell you what, that'll be my Christmas present to you guys. I won't have time to mess with the video until the end of the month. As is, I don't think the interlacing is too noticeable.

He said "OT" not "OOT."

but he also said "bait-and-switch". Marketing the SE as an OT isn't a bait-and-switch, marketing the SE as the OOT is.

I think what he was trying to say is that the BDs contain nothing to suggest that they AREN'T the originals. He was also referring to Ep. 7 hyping up how it's being made more akin to the OT when he said "bait-and-switch".

Hey! Finally , the one thing I know about the PT may be of some use!

The P&S version of TPM isn't the theatrical edit! Some shots are missing. The only one i remember is Obi-Wan and Liam Neeson jumping a gap during the fight with face-paint-guy.

Hmmm... very interesting. I wonder why that is. The title of the thread has been updated to reflect this.

Can you share some details of your capture, like vcr/capture setup/ audio source?  Did you ivtc or is it interlaced?

Thanks for posting, btw.

I'm pretty new to this sort of thing, and this capture was initially for my own personal use, but I decided to share it.

The VCR model is a DAEWOO  DV-T8DN. To capture the video, all I did was use some thick, gold plated composite cables (S-video is not available) and plug it into an analog to digital converter from Roxio.I was able to extract the stereo soundtrack as well.

I used Roxio's own software, and did absolutely nothing to the file from there. I left it uncompressed, interlaced - whatever was there is there.

Thanks for asking.

Hello all,

I’ve got the pan & scan VHS of the Phantom Menace, in it’s original theatrical cut. I know this will probably interest very few people on this forum, but I figured it could be used as a source for other fan projects.

This can be found on the usual place. I appreciate any and all feedback.
