I started watching Return of the Jedi at about 6am, and its issues outweighed the good for the first time. Honestly, it gets worse each time I watch it.

I have been going through a similar experience with ROTJ but I don’t think I’ll ever see it as being anything less than okay. What was the one aspect of the film that caused you to change your opinion?

Nearly every character is misused and flat compared to their dynamic counterparts from the previous films. Han has nothing to do and is stupidly jealous, Lando’s betrayal is not addressed, Leia could be interchangeable with anyone, the sister plot twist has never sat well with me, Vader goes from wanting to overthrow the Emperor to being fine with having Luke kill him to prove a point that doesn’t make sense, the “I can turn him to the good side!” is incredibly naïve and sounds very childish, “A certain point of view?!”, Boba Fett didn’t need to be in the movie, the Ewoks ruin the film’s pacing, I could probably go on. These issues just got to me where the parts I usually enjoyed couldn’t save the film anymore.

Damn that was a good dissection of the films issues. You actually are the one of the first people to be able to fully articulate most of my issues for me. Nostalgia has partially blinded my vision 😉

Coming from a guy who’s gone out of his way to fix most of those issues, I’m very flattered.

What pornographic companies advertise to youth? As for violence, if you’re talking about violence in media, I don’t care about that at all; there’s no evidence that it is harmful at all.

The ubiquity of porn particularly in the internet age and the ease of its accessibility to youth (and everyone) is the problem. We have an existential porn problem in our western culture, there’s no question about it. On its face, there isn’t anything wrong with adults indulging in a little erotic material, and it’s important for humans to have healthy sex lives. However, without checks and balances, over-indulgence can lead to serious psychological and physical maladies. There is empirical evidence that increased pornography use has lead to sexual dysfunction in a growing number of men. Studies have shown that boys and girls exposed to pornography have very unhealthy views of what constitutes normal sex. There are now record amounts of women who are spending insane amounts of money on things like labiaplasty because they have become addicted to watching pornography, and suddenly don’t think their bits are as attractive as a porn star’s. Meanwhile, when you read a stat that labiaplasties are up 100% in the last two years and it’s suddenly a billion dollar industry, remember those first world problems and compare them to the starvation and disease that often runs rampant in those backward countries you were just complaining about.

Yes, what America needs is to regress it’s views on sex and porn even further.

I actually think Alderaan is onto something there, it’s at least worth thinking about.

I know that a lot of fans who talk about the prequels as though they’re the worst films ever tend to watch them from time to time. I actually don’t think the prequels are among the worst films ever, but I don’t enjoy them at all and I plan on never watching them ever again. If any of you are here, what exactly is the appeal of revisiting and somewhat frequently rewatching films that you can’t stand?

I had no choice.

That a documentary made in 2004 wasn’t shot in HD, (if only to future proof it) is weird.

Are you kidding? There were tv shows back then not filmed in HD, nevermind a silly documentary.

Which ones? Star Trek Enterprise was in HD, and it went off the air by 2005. Spielberg was talking about HD content in the 1990s, so it’s not like it would be crazy to shoot HD in 2004.

JEDIT: Above post reminded me there’s a big difference between TV shows and home video bonus content.

We had Force Awakens with us, but by the time we were done with Return of the Jedi it was 9 in the morning, and we started at 4pm the day before. Everybody was dead. I suggested we not waste six hours on the prequels, but it wasn’t up to me. At least I was rewarded with the Despecialized Editions, if they were the SEs I don’t think I’d have even shown up.

Martin Luther King Jr. was an FBI target under surveilance, he committed treason? They don’t just go after “the bad guys”.

There is a big difference between putting someone under surveillance, and assassinating via remote controlling their car.

I mean, I didn’t even mention anything about assassinations, but we’ll have to wait until 2027 before all the info on MLK’s death is out. My point was about surveillance.

I said I like visiting it, but I’d never live there. I don’t know why I need to be more specific than that? Haha, I never thought my little side remark would cause a need to create a whole new thread.

You said you wouldn’t want to live in California for the same reason as Texas and Florida, and you keep refusing to elaborate. The more you do so, the more suspicious it sounds.

Oh.

I had a long response written out, but I decided against posting it. So all I’ll say is this;

This does not have to be a Trump or Russia issue. We should be having a conversation about what is in the leaks rather than the motive behind them coming out when they did, or who sourced the information. Maybe “rather than” isn’t the right phrase; both conversations can exist and should exist, but the conversation about the content of the leaks should take priority. There is worrying shit in there, but it’s being drowned out by all of this Trump/Russia nonsense. The CIA have or are working on having the ability to hack into people’s cars and remotely control them, that is a power that can only be abused, it’s something that should make everyone uncomfortable.

I’m not uncomfortable because there is literally zero reason for the CIA to target me.

Didn’t you guys quote the “They came for the Socialists and I did not speak up” thing when you guys thought I said something like, “It’s not my problem”? Very applicable here.
