But as far as I know, all the modern Batman films have had large and successful toylines. I still have dozens of figures from Tim Burton's Batman and Batman Returns. Apparently, however, they couldn't get the rights to use DeVito's face or maybe they thought it would be too scary, but the figure of The Penguin was the comic-book version.

That's probably part of why filmmakers and toymakers love Batman so much - Batman's vast array of gadgets makes it easy to mass merchandise him. Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Captain Marvel, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter lack those accessories and I wonder if that works against them.

Actually, I really don't think that Bloom is that talented an actor, although with a bit of refining andtraining, he could easily become an exceptional performer. The fangirls do grow annoying, but that is no reason to hold it against him .

I think if Bloom really wants to prove himself he needs to get away from the big costume adventure films for a while and do some more contemporary stuff - and that's coming from someone who loves the big costume adventure films.

At least the costume didn't have nipples.

Very true.... but did you know that the 'texture' on the blue parts of the costume are actually little laser-scribed 'S' symbols? They paid some ridiculous amount of money etching little 'S's all over the suit and of course, other than just adding a scaly look, it does nothing for the image on screen. Go figure... gotta spend that budget somehow!

There's only superhero who can get away with a scaly costume, and his name is Aquaman.

Y'know, we actually have action figures for Superman Returns at GIANT, but no one's buying them, nor is anybody buying any of the Superman DVDs out on display. The only piece of Superman merchandise I've seen get sold (not counting the Pepsi boxes with Superman's image on them) is a rubber ball. That makes me feel kind of sad.

Having just watched Superman III, I'm amazed at just how much the new suit looks like Bad Superman's suit in that film. That's the worst part of the magenta. It just looks like Bad Superman.

I love how virtually every poster and promo shot had his suit color corrected to the more traditional red. The marketing guys knew this color was a bad idea.

I don't get how Singer continually says "If you're making a Superman movie, don't be afraid to make a Superman movie." He specifically talked about not overly modernizing the character or the classic elements. Then he screws up the suit. I, for one, found the suit to be the #1 biggest detractor of the film. The Super-Stalker scene was probably #2. Parker-Posey-Should-Have-Been-Lois was #3. After that, I thought the film was good enough.

Edit: Though I have to say, the superboots would merit not even needing normal shoes. They'd just look like cordovan loafers under a business suit. I wanna know how Supes hid the good ol' red boots all these years.

I'm with you ADigitalMan. Not only does the SR costume resemble Bad Superman from Superman 3, it resembles the post-Crisis Bizarro costume.

Yeah, Parker Posery would have been a better Lois.

True, but Superman Returns has grossed a total of $244 million world wide (plus domestic.) I don't know what it is for Pirates, but I'm sure it is high too.

Sups is definantly going to make back the $250 million it cost to make. Superman Returns 2 here we come!! Woo! And I just love the new Superman suit. He looks more like a Superhero and not songbird.

A not so interesting PS note - I had a dream last night that I took my aunt to go see SR and it was the "edited version" and was missing about half the movie. I was soooooo pissed this morning when I woke up. But the thought of owning the DVD with the deleted scenes made my breakfast all that much tastier.

His new suit is a rubbery, washed out piece of garbage covered with scales, very anti-heroic. Superman's costume isn't supposed to be that dark. He's not an unhinged vigilante like Batman.

And then I want you to say, 'I hate house elves. They're coarse and irritating, and they get everywhere.' And then I want you to fart really loud and mug the camera."

Well I just got back from watching Superman and I thought it was just great.
It had everything for me. Action, emotion and a pretty good plot. Brandon Routh IS Superman. I think he pulled it off perfectly.
Even my mate who I went with loved it, and he's a fussy git when it comes to films. He hated Spiderman 2, thought it was shit. Though Batman Begins was just meh - which I did too really. Superman kicked ass all over BB -imo of course.
And don't you just hate it when your sitting next to the nerdy bunch. I know we're all nerds on here when it comes to Star Wars, but to see it from a different point of view is quite amusing. They laughed at all the 'in' jokes that not many understood, (I did but didn't laugh) but bless 'em.

Great film...I was all excited when the title credits started. It just wouldn't have been the same without the good ol' Superman theme. I also thought the suit looked much better, so much better than the bright Red and Blue...and no Bridget Jones style Big pants.

It's just a great ride of emotions. Loved it...now I have to take the missus to see it next week. Yay!!

So with Pirates 2 and Supes, that makes two out of two good blockbusters this summer so far.

It's 'Revenge of the Sith' repeat phobia. Revenge of the Sith, most of us loved it the first time...

Then, we see it again, and we don't like it as much, and it gets less enjoyable after the first viewing. Maybe the entire movie-going public has been conditioned to just avoid second viewings.

Revenge of the Sith was the last movie I saw in theatres twice.

Maybe. I've had that problem watching Men in Black 1 and Pirates of the Caribbean 1; they're still entertaining but they don't feel quite as fresh and funny with re-viewings. Men in Black 2, well, I just couldn't stand that film period - it felt like an overextended sitcom. I haven't seen POTC 2 yet, but I hope I don't have the same feelings towards it that I had towards MIB 2.

Don't forget outrageous ticket prices.

I watched Braniac Attacks, I actually have the DVD, and I honestly didn't think it was that bad. When I read a lot of customer reviews on like Amazon.com the biggest complaint was mainly that the voices of Lex Luthor & Braniac were different from The Animated Series. I thought that the storyline was good and all. The way Lex Luthor acted though was kind of like, I don't see Luthor actually acting like that. Just my two cents, I know there are people that don't like it for better reasons then two voices being changed.

Basically, yes, the decision to replace Clancy Brown with Powers Boothe and then have Lex act like a goofball was a horrid one.

Anyhow, it was good hear to Tim Daly doing Superman's voice again, even if it wasn't the best material, and it's always good to hear Dana Delany as Lois Lane. I recommend renting it for the giant Superman VS. Mecha-Brainiac fight.

Spielberg was approached to direct the first HP movie but he wanted to hire american actors for major parts and have Haley Joel Osment playing the part of Harry, but he was American and had blonde hair. J.K. Rowling refused to have the films stripped of thier British heratige, and I can't blame her. So Spielberg refused to do it unless he got what he wanted. Small article about Haley playing Harry Potter

I'm torn. I respect Rowling, but I would have loved to have seen Spielberg's take on the franchise. Then again, I'm not British. Ah, well. What's done is done.

I wonder if it would be better for Americans NOT to be involved with the very British Potter film adaptations. Clash of styles and ideologies and all that.

I'm hoping Richard Curtis will do HBP.

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with Richard Curtis. What's on his resume?

He's only directed one film so far, Love Actually, but he's written a host of films and TV shows. Mr. Bean, Black Adder, Four Wedings & A Funeral, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill.

He interviews the cast on the GoF DVD. He's a brilliant writer and Love Actually showed he can direct the hell out of character actors in an ensemble setting. He even made Alan Rickman likeable. I know he'd nail the humorous parts of the books that have been sorely lacking in the films without sacrificing the emotional textures.

Edit: Oh, and he wrote "The Girl in the Cafe" which was David Yates' last film.

Interesting.
