Lucasfilm: Beyond Star Wars and Indiana Jones

I feel that “saved in the edit” is indeed a phrase that carries certain anti-GL-credit connotations.

Not necessarily. It depends on the context and how a person use that term to support his argument.

What i remind from the ROTS Making of (“Within a minute” i guess) Lucas emphasized himself that he likes to shape a movie in the editing and post-production phase. His specific quote was something like “Most directors shot the movie. I shot AROUND the movie.” So he knows that he can balance out certain shortcomings he wasn’t aware during prinicipal photography in the editing process hence SAVE the movie.

Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **
Time

I actually like the “Han-gets-his-name” scene because of one aspect: the imperial officer shows a small amount of compassion to Han. Out of pity he gave Han a family name.

During his service on Corellia the imperial officer must have met a lot of miserable people. And maybe because of that he did not became a callousness soldier of the empire, but rather a tender-hearted officer that has to deal with a lot of desperate people who want to join the army of the empire.

IMO that scene adds to the atmosphere and world-bulding of Corellia. It expands the Star Wars universe just with a small dialogue.

Phantom Menace Trailer
Time

As i mentioned in the [Han - Solo Movie ** Spoilers **] me and my friends watched the TPM teaser trailer, which i recorded on VHS from the German TV channel Pro7. We watched it multiple times in a row and each one us was very exycited that a new Star Wars movie will be released in theatres.

One my friends saw the “Darth-Maul-ignites-his-double-bladed-light-saber” scene and he asked immediately:

“Is that supposed to be the guy from Shadows of the Empire, Prince Xizor?”

I remember debunking his question by mentioning that this movie will be set decades before the first Star Wars movie so it can’t be Prince Xizor. We were aware of Shadows of the Empire at that time because i had the novel and another friend had a Nintendo 64 along with the SOTE game.

Back then one of my initial thoughts about the TPM teaser trailer was: Anakin Skywalker is way too young. I never changed my opinion on that matter.

I don’t think Xizor has the recognition Maul has with casual fans and the general public though.

OMG, i remember an incident that happened over 20 years ago!

The Worst Scene/Sequence in Any Star Wars Film

Worst shot for me would have to be this:

Yeah George, let’s put a closeup CGI cow’s ass slowly walk past the frame and block the story which we already have filmed. This adds so much realism.

I always wondered if the texture from the CG Ronto is an exact copy & paste from JP’s Brachiosaurus CG model. Are there any side-by-side comparisions?

Lucas: “Just copy and paste the skin from Stevens film. I asked him. He was worried but i assured him no one will notice. Looks good to me.”

Which one of the Star Wars Movies was made WITHOUT the fans in mind?
Time

The first three are obvious, because the fans did not know what to expect:

Star Wars (1977)
The Empire strikes back (1980)
Return of the Jedi (1983)

Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
–> The story unfolded like no one expected …i mean Midichlorians? No fan-service here, move along.

Star Wars The Last Jedi (2017)
–> Again the story unfolded like no one expected. Johnson did not care about the fans. No fan-service here, move along.

SW Movies, that were developed & executed WITH the fans in mind:

Star Wars Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
–> Lucas did some course correction here in order to please/calm the fans after TPM. More action & light saber fights, reducing Jar Jars role, injecting OT elements such as the Clones (visual similar to OT Stormtroopers), Tatooine homestead and Jango Jett (visual similar to OT Boba Fett).

Star Wars Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
–> Lucas continued pleasing the fans: Scaling back Jar Jar so that he was barely in the movie, again lots of light saber fights, Emperor gets his ROTJ face, the famous Tantive IV corridor, X-Wing precursors and Death Star I being build. In general lots of winks to Episode IV. Some elements were necessary for the story (Anakin VS Obi-Wan) some were not (Emperor VS Yoda, the most obvious fan service element imo).

Star Wars The Force Awakens (2015)
–> Well, we all know what happened here. Unoriginal Episode IV Copy or paying honorable tribute to Episode IV? You have to decide for youself.

Rogue One - A Star War Story (2016)
–> That one is obvious imo. Allowedly, it is linked very close to Episode IV, so there should be some OT elements, but … LOOOOOOOOOTS of them were too distracting & unnecessary. Fan Service everywhere.

Solo - A Star Wars Story (2018
–> This one could have a been a fan service mess too, but it wasn’t. Again like ROTS you need to have some necessary elements if you want to tell a an origin story about Han Solo (like Han meets Chewie). But on the other side: NO Jabba the Hutt, NO Tatooine cantina, NO Greedo, NO Mynoks, NO Ord Mantell, NO Jedi, NO Darth Vader, NO Death Star, NO Rancor, NO Boba Fett and NO Slave I in this film. They could have … but they did’nt do it.

The Sarlacc Trilogy

3-hour runtime per movie. All in all a 9-hour epic tale. Only one camera angle. Highlights: Day & Night cycle, sandstorms and every once in a while a poor creature stumbles into the pit.

And Boba Fett blasts out? 😉

That would be a scene for a Special Edition Cut of the Sarlacc Trilogy along additional digestion sounds. It does burping but what about farting? 😉

General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

fmalover said:

I recently gave the prequel trilogy another try and you know what? My distaste for TFA has rekindled my appreciation of the PT. Now I enjoy, like really enjoy, the PT. Are they objectively bad movies? Hell yes, but I still rate them above TFA. That’s how much I dislike TFA.

Let me get this straight: You use three movies to fuel your dislike for one movie? In Life-time terms: You watch six hours of movies just to dislike a 2 hour movie you don’t watch?

Please take a look at my signature … you will find a very good advice from SilverWook.

Why not just ignore TFA and enjoy the Star Wars parts you like?
