If they would only do it to look like the best effects possible IN 1968 (2001 A Space Odyssey) this would be fine. Instead, they're going to make it look like the butt-ugly effects on the new shows.

If a Charles Bronson movie from 1974 can be transferred faithfully to anamorphic dvd, so can Star Wars. It can be done. It's done all the time.

Maybe it was changed to green to be instantly recognized as a new saber (most people hadn't seen Empire in 3 years) since the scene of Luke building it was cut.

Attack of the Clones, (particularly the early trailers and posters, and the "love story" in general) was very calculated to get more girls to Star Wars. I guess it didn't work. Too bad, I was gonna use "you're not like sand" as my new pick -up line.

Boris, do you really feel the theatrical Star Wars trilogy ("bonus" or whatever you want to call them) doesn't warrant the same effort as Bad News Bears Go To Japan? Do you really feel 1993 tapes accurately present the original work of three highly regarded cinematographers?

The shots look sort of alright, and it's nice to see the movies looking a little more natural, without all that whore makeup from 2004. Thing is, on a hi-def TV these discs will look worse than the laserdiscs looked on a regular TV. So, as your TV gets better, your original trilogy gets worse. It's built-in obsolescence.

Maybe we've been looking at this 9/12 release backwards. Maybe it's not the last hurrah for the originals, it's the last hurrah for the special edition, since those are the versions that are about to become obsolete in 07? The mega-set WILL sell more with the originals included. An "ultimate 30th anniversary" set without the fricking movie that turned 30 is too retarded even for Lucasfilm...

Does anyone know the actual cost of making a new anamorphic transfer? Not a restoration, just a standard bare bones release.
For example, what did it cost to create the anamorphic dvd of Bad News Bears 2? (a 1977 film, with a new transfer, that you can buy for 5 bucks)

Man, I can't see what the big selling point for this potentially 100 dollar set could possibly be, except restorations of the original trilogy. Unless Lucas is starting from scratch and doing "original-ish" all-new versions with less obvious changes. Or new, populist cuts of the prequels with less Jar Jar and less... people talking. Actually, I'd probably buy that.

Love the blue saber. It fits the mood of the final duel's setting, and it hearkens back to those simpler days when good=blue, bad=red. (and the Revenge trailers/posters)

Amazingly, even after 19 years of moving around, I found my ticket stubs from 1987, and the tickets were only a dollar each!

They showed the trilogy in 87 at several places for the 10th anniversary. I saw it in Century City and it was packed. I had never seen people in costume at a movie before.

I saw Star Wars in 70mm around 1991 and I could be wrong but I don't remember any matte boxes. I was used to the vhs version which has them everywhere, and this was quite a difference. I also couldn't stop looking at all the stuff on the sides that I'd never seen watching it pan/scan a million times.

One of the most interesting things about Empire was the playground discussions about the meaning of Luke's face inside the Vader mask during the cave scene. It was like Fellini for kids. Has to be the first and last time you'll ever see 3rd graders discussing symbolism in a movie.

Yub Nub all the way. Not because it's a great song, cuz well, it ain't. For better or worse, that IS Return of the Jedi. The song matches the rest of a muppet-heavy, kid-friendly movie. That pan-flute-Yanni-new-age-aromatherapy-fuck fest is the least Star Warsy music ever.

Good question. I've hated and resented the special editions for so long, it's hard to supress my bitchy kneejerk impulse, but I'll give it a shot.

Star Wars-there's about 10 brief shots in the death star battle, specifically during the initial dive, Luke-saves-Biggs, and Wedge-saves-Luke that feel like genuine, subtle improvements over their predecessors. Those painted people on the side of the throne room at the end? Fixing them was good. It's nice for that iconic shot to be just right.

Empire-Recompositing the snowspeeders was nicely done.

Jedi-the Rancor scene looks significantly better. I think the speeder bikes and stuff in the space battle were recomposited, too. They look good.
I think that's it.

I can't remember specifics. The whole third act was like child abuse and I was punchdrunk. "I am your father" was part of it, but also Luke got his ass kicked and his hand cut off, and I think I thought Han was dead. Luke and Han were my heroes and they were practically invincible in the first movie, and this was all really shocking. And then it was over! "Come back in 3 YEARS kid!"

Lucas was AWESOME in the 70s. I'd never downplay his talents from back then. To direct Graffiti, THX1138, and Star Wars by age 32, or whatever he was, is fucking brilliant. And all three original works, not based on a book, or a true story, and all made with limited resources. He was great. I miss that guy.

So was the 2004 set considered a success or not? If there's actually enough leftover discs to have a whole new release, that sounds like a LOT of discs. The Indiana Jones set is a year older and still hasn't been repackaged or sold separately.

In May I remember seeing screenshots from the "THX WOW" demo dvd. At the time, some people assumed the dvds would probably look like that. What was the source used to create those clips?

If it flopped, Lucas still had American Graffiti under his belt-that was a huge hit. Based on that, he still could have either made Raiders or raised the dough for that low-budget Star Wars 2, since he made a point of getting the sequel rights. That was the days of Planet of the Apes, where the sequels actually got cheaper.
