Intriguing new info on Original Trilogy and Prequel Trilogy deleted scenes gleaned from CELEBRATION IV.
Time
Yeah, that was interesting how they found that alternate footage of Guinness. Although apparently the negative for the Jabba scene was never found and they had to use a dupe in 97. I wonder why that was missing. I seem to remember something like it was loaned out to the people making the "star wars to jedi" special in '83 (which had clips from it in its original form) and they lost it? Or am I making that up?

So, um... no new DVD's announced this year?
Time
Fuck yes, the complaining is old. So, don't read it. I hear there's a whole internet out there. What exactly IS the right thing to do anyway? A sit-in at The Ranch? If you happen to prefer the original versions, and spent hard earned money on a modern TV, I only see these choices: 1. Complain here and maybe Home Theater Forum 2. Force yourself to prefer the new version 3. Don't watch any version, get into Star Trek. 4. Watch the 06 dvds and pretend you don't notice what they look like.

The harping here is repetitive and unfortunate, but it really is a must. Nothing gets done in home video without constant demand. It was the only reason the originals came out at all, and the only reason they made a completely new version of Superman 2. For example, 10 years in, there still isn't a proper dvd of a movie I love called Taking of Pelham 123. Why? cause nobody's asking for it!

Of course this place is a broken record! The ONE thing it was created for ain't happened! To get three movies presented and preserved at a level equal to motherfucking Every Which Way But Loose. But maybe asking only one time, with quiet churchy reverence would have worked better.
And p.s. fuck those tours of Sansweets's toy collection up the ass. (THAT they'll take the time to do)

The Visual Effects Society Unveils “50 Most Influential Visual Effects Films of All Time”
Time
I probably would've included Phantom Menace, but I understand why it's missing. I think the effects guys are factoring in how "good" the movie is, not just the technical advances. They're not influential if no one remembers them or likes them. Hence, no Sherlock Holmes or Dragonslayer. (I remember a lot of effects guys, usually while praising The Matrix, saying the effects actually hurt Phantom Menace more than helped it)

Darabount rips Lucas over Indy IV script
Time
Jumpman, how can you presume to know the reaction of EVERY person who just wants those old movies treated right, including me? If the originals were restored, this website's entire purpose for being created would be gone, so surely SOME of this extremely awful complaining would stop. And it's not like Lucas is some delicate porcelain doll who can't be criticized.

Relax, nobody hates George, don't lump a tiny handful of hysterical people with the rest of us. Some people just think his "my vision" line is bullshit. If he was so concerned with presenting his vision, why are the old versions currently in every Target in the country, and the fugliest, most outdated discs in the store, to boot? ("because the fans never specified they wanted it to look like a normal dvd, blah blah, he can never make you people happy")

About Darabont, you can't slam the guy for being passionate. Who wants writers to just be dispassionate hired stenographers? Yeah, that'll really make for great scripts.

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?
Time
The sister thing is really the only thing from the trilogy that goes clunk for me. It's pretty clear at the end of Empire she loves Han, and Luke is cool with that, he's got bigger problems. That was plenty good for resolving the triangle. Can't Leia be The Other simply by becoming the full George Washington-leader of the Rebellion?

In general, I think the trilogy is very much in line with what was set up in 77. Luke learned the ways of the force and became a jedi like his father, Han got Leia ("you think a princess and a guy like me..."), the good guys won, and everyone lived happily ever after. I mean, if the story didn't shift gears a little and the tone and the status quo never changed, that's called Star Trek, and well, sucks to that.

It's harder to accept Luke and Leia as siblings if you spent 6 years wondering if he'll get to fuck her. I don't think anybody's disregarding a story point because it came after the fact, it's just personal taste about how it was handled. This isn't holy text, sequels are ignored all the time. When I watch Jaws, I don't think Scheider's son grows up, works at Sea World, and gets attacked by another shark. In 3-D.

Where to enter EU?
Time
Not to be a jerk, but I'd strongly suggest not bothering. It will eat up a silly amount of your entertainment money, and it just goes on and on, month after month. I'm embarassed how many books I either forced myself to finish or just bailed on. The thrawn trilogy was solid, as was the Dark Empire comic, if you're into comics. Flip through the trade paperback collections at the bookstore, and if you like the art, maybe go for it. Other than that it was a total chore.
