How do I Help?
Time
Mackey's right. This problem is way too big for you to handle on your own. The good news is that your friend is willing to talk about it, but the most important thing for a drug addict after professional counseling is a network of friends who will get him away from the environments where he used to use drugs. Environment plays a very powerful role in addiction. Next is to get him away from friends who encourage him to use and help him to make better connections with friends who don't use, even if that means making new friends. It's going to be a painful process, and you can't give up on him if he falls off the wagon. Just be supportive and don't judge. Judging is one of many things that keep people addicted.

Whew! That was a mouthful.

Freedom of the press and freedom of speech are both very important rights, but the fact that they are rights does not mean that we throw discretion to the wind.

Example: I am a lawyer (in training). Someone contacts me and wants me to defend their rights on a particular issue. I do not agree with their position on that right. Do I still have to defend them? No. If I think their claim is frivolous and that they will waste more money defending that right than finding a simpler solution, I have the discretion to refuse to defend that person. That does not mean the right will not get defended; I'm sure someone else will take the case because the dollar signs will attract him/her.

In the case of these cartoons, freedom of speech/freedom of the press may dictate that they have a right to be printed, but that did not take away the papers' discretion not to print them. They simply chose not to exercise that discretion.

Rights go hand in hand with responsibilities. Never forget that.
