STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION

Seeing the Wampa was great after all the years of not really seeing him but it also took away the mystery of that creature so i want to return that scene to having that mystery so no more wampa.

I agree with you here Ady, most of the SE Wampa scenes ruin the "unknown terror" the Wampa represents. How many of those SE shots do you plan to remove? Just my opinion now, but I would remove all the SE shots of the Wampa eating but leave in the final SE shot of the Wampa screaming and clutching its shoulder after Luke severed its arm, I actually like that final shot. But if you want to remove all SE shots that's cool to.

So are you officially on vacation now that all ANH Revisited versions are completed? If so, enjoy your time off and please let us know when you plan on starting work on ESB. Peace to you Adywan.

Well i have decided to take a break from the DVD-9's at the moment. Getting a bit burn out doing the special features and painting the cover is taking a lot longer than i first thought. I just didn't like my first design so i have started from scratch.

Anyway i have decided to do a NTSC DVD-5 only "Purist" edition of Revisited. There will be a few differences to the original version:

Obi-Wan's hut scene is returned to the original edit
No Darth Vader's theme in the movie
No music during the conference scene
No music during the lightsaber duel, original music cue restored.
No extended Tie fighter Approach during the Death Star battle, the pacing will be returned to its original state.

There will be no menus or subtitles on the DVD or any extras.

Adywan, will the credits still be your extended version or will you use the original credits and music?

I have a question for you Adywan, I guess this question can be directed to others here as well. I've been trying for some time now to get on a PIF chain, to acquire a DVD-5 NTSC version of your edit, but have been unsuccessful. I've sent polite pm's to a half dozen posters here on the board, who I believed would know of such things, but I have received no response from anyone. I still have not seen the completed version of Star Wars Revisited, I'm incapable of downloading the movie because of the limited technology I possess. Adywan, if you or anyone else could please just point me in the direction of someone who is part of a DVD PIF chain I would be grateful. Thank you. Sorry to go slightly off topic and sound like a beggar.

I'm glad to hear that you've already made the changes, Adywan, thanks for listening. I'm also glad your leaving Kenobi's dialogue alone. I'm constantly dumbfounded how many people want to make drastic changes to the OT so it's more in line with the PT. The PT is the fucked up trilogy, not the OT. If drastic changes are going to be made to the story, they should be made to the PT so it flows more evenly with the OT.

My biggest complaint about the ESB:SE is the new Vader/Emperor scene that Lucas fucked with, it doesn’t make sense anymore. I didn't mind replacing the old monkey/woman hologram with one of Ian McDiarmid or replacing Clive Revell's voice with McDiarmid's but I take great exception to the altered dialogue, it sucks. I believe I’ve figured out a way to fix this scene in ESB with minimal editing that preserves the original integrity it once had.

I’ve watched the entire Vader/Emperor scene in ESB very carefully, shot for shot, and below I’ve listed the differences in dialogue and camera angles between the original 1980 version and the 2004 DVD version. I’ve also listed my own recommended changes to the scene which I believe would make this part of the movie look much better and not look so ridiculous as it does at present.

Vader
-1980: What is thy bidding my master? (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Emperor
-1980: There is a great disturbance in the force. (camera front view of Emperor)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Vader
-1980: I have felt it. (camera front view of Vader kneeling)
-2004: dialogue unchanged (camera front view of Emperor)

Emperor
-1980: We have a new enemy, Luke Skywalker (camera front view of Vader kneeling)
-2004: We have a new enemy, (camera front view of Emperor) the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star. (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up) I have no doubt this boy is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker. (camera front view of Emperor)

Recommended Changes: Delete the underlined dialogue and camera views. These new lines add nothing and are just stupid. Vader and the Emperor obviously already know who Luke is. Use a camera view that’s facing Vader for the entire shot while the Emperor is speaking so we don’t notice the cuts.

Vader
-1980: Yes, my master. (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: How is that possible? (camera view unchanged)

Recommended Changes: Delete the underlined dialogue and restore the original dialogue from 1980. Again this new line is just retarded. Vader definitely knows Luke is his son and even speaks Luke’s name at the start of the film when the Empire finds the Rebel base on Hoth.

Emperor
-1980: He could destroy us. (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: Search your feelings, Lord (camera side view of Vader and Emperor) Vader, you will know it to be true. (camera front view of Vader kneeling) He could destroy us. (camera front view of Emperor)

Recommended Changes: Delete the underlined dialogue and camera views. Same explanation as before, the new lines are unnecessary and don’t make any sense.

Vader
-1980: He’s just a boy. Obi-Wan can no longer help him. (camera front view of Vader kneeling)
-2004: dialogue unchanged (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up)

Emperor
-1980: The force is strong with him. The son of Skywalker must not become a Jedi. (camera front view of Emperor)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Vader
-1980: If he could be turned, he would become a powerful ally. (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up)
-2004: dialogue and camera view unchanged

Emperor
-1980: Yes (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up), yes, he would be a great asset (camera front view of Emperor). Can it be done? (camera side view of Vader and Emperor)
-2004: Yes (camera front view of Vader from the shoulders up) , yes, he would be a great asset. (camera view unchanged) Can it be done? (camera view unchanged)

Recommended Changes: Add the underlined dialogue and camera view so this shot more resembles the original. I'm sure McDiarmid has said 'yes' several times throughout the saga.

Vader
-1980: He will join us or die (camera side view of Vader and Emperor) master. (camera front view of Vader bowing)
-2004: dialogue and camera views unchanged

These are just my opinions of course, but I think most will agree this greatly improves the screwup that Lucas did to this part of ESB.

One of my beefs with ESB was the giant wind vane in the center of Cloud City, or the window on the vane to be precise. After Luke gets blown out the window we see a wide angle exterior shot of the vane. It shows the window that Luke just got blown out of near the very top of the vane. This suggests that the entire carbon freezing facility is within the top of this thin vane. To me that seems both impractical from an engineering perspective and not believable visually. The carbon freezing chamber should be inside the city, not the vane. I would suggest moving the window and the balcony farther down on the vane so that they're both at a parallel level with the support arm which attaches the vane to the interior wall. The lighted tubular tunnel, that Luke walks through before he confronts Vader in front of the big window inside the vane, could be explained as the inside of that support arm.

Joshua_Blue
In my view, the shield is only impenetrable by lasers and other similar weapons. The ships can pass through the shield normally they just cannot fire through it. That is why the land beyond the horizon of the Hoth rebel base, out of the reach of the rebel fire, and attack with walkers. If they landed directly in front of the rebel base, they would be vulnerable during landing.

Adywan
Well actually not even ships can get through the shield. Don't forget that they have to lower the shield for the transports to escape so my thought on this is that once the shield is lowered the walkers can slip through .

Actually, Adywan, I think Joshua_Blue is correct on this. The Rebels don't lower the shields for the transports to escape, they lower the shields so they can fire the Ion cannon out, which gives the transports cover against the Star Destroyers in orbit. JB's theory is the one I also always believed. But your theory of the walkers sneaking through while the shields are briefly down is also plausible. Either way, I don't think you have to do any editing to explain how the walkers get in Ady. We all accept that they got in, we don't need an answer.

I know there are bums out there, dark_jedi, but I'm really counting on the generosity of some people to get me a hard copy. Neither I or my computer are good with torrents or rapidshare, or whatever else mass downloading system out there. I still haven't seen adywan's completed work yet but I have confidence that it's a piece of art, better than any crap that the great flanneled one has spewed out in recent years.

Erik and zombie are on to something. The PIF should be voluntary and we should be able to leave feedback on those participating, both postive and negative. There has to be honor and accountability if PIF is going to work.

Okay I thought I would give a little history on the flipper/hand scene in the Mos Eisley Cantina. If you read the original script or the novelization of ANH you will learn that Kenobi does in fact slice off Evazan's right arm and he kills both Ponda Baba and Kabe (the small rat/bat like alien). They each got cleaved in half from their head to their groin. Lucas used a wolf man's arm for two reasons. 1) because GL couldn't find a mannequin's arm that looked real enough and 2) back in 1977 GL was worried that a human arm might be too graphic and he was concerned the film might get an R rating instead of a PG. Pg-13 wasn't introduced until 1984, thank you Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
So if you go by the written story Evazan should be the one who loses his arm. But if you want to go by what has appeared on the screen then it's Ponda Baba. I wouldn't mind seeing a human arm, but that's my taste. I'm not picking sides, just wanted to brief you all on a little SW history.

I'm unable to download your edit Ady, I'll have to wait for the DVD, but I still wanted to give you my congratulations on finally completing your masterpiece. I can only imagine the sense of satisfaction you have right now after devoting over a year and a half of your life to this project. Now take a long vacation, you've earned it, then when your fully refreshed we need you to get to work on ESB and ROTJ. Cheers to you, Mr. Adywan!

Now that the edit is complete, I hoping some of my fellow forum brethren here in the U.S.A. can hook me up with a NTSC DVD-5 & DVD-9 version when they become available. I would be forever grateful.

musicman - I think it would be better to try to edit Episode III to fit Vader's line than vice versa. I've come up with some possible ways to try it--I think they're in the Starkiller Ranch thread.

Changing Kenobi's one line in ANH from "Your father" to "I" doesn't bother my too much but I do agree with you musicman that it eludes to a larger problem with the overall Star Wars saga. In my opinion the OT is flawless, storywise that is. The plot, the dialog, and the characters were all executed close to perfection. The true problem is that the PT is so heavily flawed storywise that it now makes the OT look like it's full of contradictions and inconsistencies. Lucas royally screwed up when making the PT. The PT is so full of garbage, unfortunately it's impossible to fix all the mistakes with simply cut and paste editing. The story of the PT greatly needs to be rewritten and reshot for it to be faithful to the OT. We know that this can't be done so the easiest thing to make the entire saga make more sense is to edit and change the OT so it fits more with the PT, when in fact it SHOULD be the other way around. I absolutely love what Adywan is doing with ANH so far but I do have fears that eventually the OT is going to be changed from it's original look, feel and story just so it's more faithful to the crap that is the PT and all for the sake of a fluid storyline. I will quietly keep my fingers crossed and pray that this doesn't happen. So far Adywan hasn't done anything for me to believe he doesn't have anything but the best intentions for Star Wars at heart. But I admit I worry for ESB and ROTJ.

Info & Ideas: ESB and ROTJ Wishlist
Time
Okay, first of all besides the basic sound and picture quality improvements not much needs to be done to ESB and ROTJ. Second, The PT should be made to fit the OT, NOT the other way around. No stupid additions to the OT just because they're in the PT. That being said here's my list.

ESB
- Restore Boba Fett's original voice, played by actor Jason Wingreen. I know thanks to Lucas f-ing around in the prequels Boba is now a clone of Jango Fett, but Temuera Morrison's voice stinks. Listen to both voices and I dare anyone to say that Morrison's performance is better than Mr. Wingreen's. Even if Boba is a clone that doesn't mean he has to sound exactly like Jango. Age, warfare, and hard living can all contribute to the change. Also, why can't Boba have a voice scrambler in his helmet just like Vader?

- On Dagobah restore Luke's original line of "you're lucky you don't taste very good." This line was funny and fit with the humor of the OT.

- Fix the lightsabers. The color on the blades of the sabers is grossly faded out and they bleed together when clashing.

- I'm with astromech, restore Vader's original line of "Bring my shuttle" and delete the shot of Vader walking towards a shuttle on Bespin.

- I like Ian McDiarmid as the Emperor but the dialog in the new Vader/Emperor scene is completely retarded now and needs to be edited to more closely fit the original lines. I've discussed this with Adywan before and I've come with a pretty good way of repairing this scene.

ROTJ
- Again fix the lightsabers. Same problem as in ESB.

- Get rid of the Harmonica Frog and the whole Jedi Rocks sequence with all the new extras and please restore Lapti Nek. Honestly both the old puppets and the new CGI characters aren't perfect but the new music is just terrible. Lapti Nek sounds much more Star Wars-esque.

- At the Sarlaac pit delete Solo's new line of "It's okay, I can see a lot better" and restore his original line of "Trust me." The new line just seems like a mouthful to say in that moment. Besides, 'trust me' is kind of Solo's slogan in the OT. It's funny and fits Solo's attitude in these commonly risky situations he finds himself in the OT.

- During the celebration sequence on Coruscant, for the 2004 DVD editions Lucas added the old Senate building and the Jedi Temple in the background. These weren't present for the 1997 Special Editions. This change seems entirely illogical to me. If I were an evil Sith Master, like Palpatine, I'd burn these buildings to the ground and not let them remain standing. The Senate was disbanded in ANH and the Jedi Temple should have been destroyed in ROTS?

- Another celebration change, I don't like the entire planet Naboo added to the sequence, but I know I'm probably in the minority on that. So at the very least delete the Gungans dancing on top of the temple and the "Weesa Free" screaming. Gungans are the worst characters added to the Star Wars saga.

Hey Adywan,

I don't know if this has been asked before. But will you be able to have menus and chapters on your edit? If so, will they be your own design or will you use the current dvd designs? I know your work is taking up A LOT of data and if you can't have menus and chapters that's just fine. I was just curious is all. Keep up the good work, ady.

Be patient, teharri, Adywan has expressed interest in "revisiting" both ESB and ROTJ. However it'll probably be a few months before he even starts on other projects. He's been working hard on ANH now for over 18 months and it has literally taken alot out of him. I imagine after he completes ANH in January he's gonna take a long vacation then maybe start on ESB in late summer '08.

All you new members who've jumped in here lately really have to cut Mr. Adywan some serious slack and stop breathing down his neck. I've lost count how many times over the past year plus that Ady has nearly killed himself to fix a certain shot or get a piece of music or sound effect to fit just right. He's lost money, equipment has crashed, memory has been erased, he's been ripped off by shading salesmen, and he's had some unpleasant health scares as well. He's not doing this edit for any gain whatsoever, he's doing it out of pure love for Star Wars. So stop banging on the table demanding more this and more that, if he's fixed this or altered that, and stop asking when he's gonna get around to the next episode. I'm anxious too for ESB and ROTJ but I have way too much respect for the man to scream in his ear. He's already promised more than I ever thought possible. Ady will get around to the other episodes in the saga when he's ready and not a moment before. He's one man doing the work of a hundred, everyone needs to calm down and give him a break.

Sorry for the rant. It just feels like this thread has taken on the feel of a daycare center with screaming children everywhere. Timeouts for everyone.

Oh, I confess it probably wouldn't be wise. My reasons for the suggestion were out of spite towards Lucas just to show him what someone with Adywan's talents could accomplish on their own. Since '97 Lucas has become increasing arrogant, egotistic and power hungry beyond measure. Thanks to the less than stellar Special Editions and the absolutely atrocious Prequels the Star Wars Saga is no longer what it once was. I just like to see someone somewhere put Lucas in his place. Anybody who dares raises criticisms of Lucas is now dragged through the mud by his legal wolves.

Hey, reave, could you possibly please load those clips onto youtube or some other site. For some damn reason Rapid Share doesn't work on my laptop. I get sound but no picture.

Just got finished going through your whole updated list ady, whew. You're definitely in tune with the majority of Star Wars fans in what needed to be fixed. Well at least in tune with us old 1st generation fans who've been around since '77. The screen shots look great, can't wait for January.

Question, ady, when you finally completed this edit have you thought about maybe mailing a copy to Lucasfilm, LTD with a list of all the changes you made and why you made them? Perhaps adding a polite letter with some constructive criticism to Mr. Lucas as to why he didn't make these changes himself with all the money, power, and resources at his command.

Now for some bad news....

There is still so much to do on this edit that a November release is now unlikely. There is still a very slim chance that it will still happen but i'm not going to rush anything. December is also probably off the books. At the rate i am going the later half of December is looking more likely but then that clashes with the Christmas postal rush so if this is the case then i will delay it until the beginning of January so there will be no postal problems but i may upload it to usenet at an earlier date, but juts the DVD-5 version for now

I'm very glad you're taking your time ady and not pushing things. I was getting worried that you were going to do a rush job on your edit and get it out by November no matter what. In a twisted sort of way the waiting for your edit is kinda fun. The anticipation is what makes great movie watching, especially a Star Wars movie, such an enjoyable experience. I haven't been this amped since waiting for TPM back in '99. Of course that turned out to be a major disappointment, but that won't happen with your film. Your work and commitment are second to none. God speed, adywan. Happily waiting 'til January 2008.

As a former Deadhead myself I also like the term Anchorheads. I can just see Luke with a "Steal Your Face" sticker on his T-16 as he cruises around Toche Station.
Ha, maybe someone here could make a logo, incorporating the Grateful Dead's, and that could be our standard.

I too would like to say please, please adywan don't rush yourself on completing your edit by some self appointed release date. I've said this many times to you so forgive me for repeating it. I would rather have your edit be done right than done fast. If that means pushing back the release date until after the New Year that's fine, don't press yourself too hard. Relax, take a deep breath, and take all the time you need to finish your edit the right way. We all appreciate your effort and dedication, ady, and no one is breathing done your neck or demanding anything. Later bud.

Sorry to hear about the BS you've went through lately, ady. Our health care system is a blatant joke over here in the states as well. I'm a 15 year smoker myself, been trying to quit for a couple months but it's hard, so I know how you feel. Hang in there man.

bkev, 21 out of 50 states here have full non-smoking bans in bars, restaurants, and other workplaces. 10 states have partial non-smoking bans, and the remaining 19 don't have any bans. But that doesn't matter because many of those states have local city and county non-smoking bans. I know smoking is a bad habbit and those of us who do smoke should quit but I don't think people should be treated like s**t because they do smoke.

God almighty, Adywan, that trailer kicked ass big time! November can't come soon enough, of course since I live in the USA I suppose all us Yanks may have to wait a little longer to get the NTSC version. The colors, the sound it all looked flawless. I especially loved the new scene of the Death Star and Star Detroyers orbiting that rocky grey planet. The TIEs at the Battle of Yavin did look a little too in sync. If you can make it look more natural that's great, if not don't sweat it, Adywan, you're still doing a great job. I don't even have the final copy of ANH in may hands and I'm already geeked for you to work your magic on the ESB & ROTJ. You're the best thing to happen to Star Wars in a very long time, Adywan, god speed friend.
