Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

I'm pretty familiar with the Star Wars SE and the various ridiculous changes it contains. In the case of Star Wars, Harmy's release is the clear choice to watch. But then I thought about TESB and realized that I'm not nearly as familiar with the SE. In fact I'm not even sure I've ever watched it. I know there are less changes than in Star Wars.

So, here's a curious question - do you feel that there are "showstopper" changes (like Greedo shooting first or the awful CGI Jabba) in the Blu-ray TESB SE that mandate watching Harmy's version? Or is it more just a preference for seeing the original theatrical version of the film?

PS: This question is not meant to detract from the amazing work Harmy is doing, it's great that he has made an original version available for us to view.

Yeah, Empire has been spared really well by revisionist history and horrible CGI, that being said that doesn't mean we shouldn't preserve the theatrical version.

"Star Wars is the most overrated franchise ever."

What that guy said, Manic Street Preachers made arguably one of the greatest albums ever made, but their discography is also filled to the brim of 5/10 albums.

Yes, Star Wars dips in quality, yes the prequels are an absolute mess of cinema that should never be reviewed at 2/10 or over (even though most major critics disagree, as do I), and honestly yes people do tend to overestimate how much of a big deal Star Wars is, but a bad fanbase or a bad series doesn't stop a great film from being great anymore.

EDIT: As much as that guy also had dumb reasoning, he's so right about American Graffiti, that film seriously needs more love.

Star Wars was never meant to be subtle, Lucas set out to pay with our ingrained cultural tropes (Deviating from this is partly why the PT struggled).

I disagree. A talented writer could have made the PT a pessimistic saga steeped in moral ambiguity/relativism and still made it good. George isn't a talented writer, however, and that is why the PT we got is a complete failure.

I like the Prequel Trilogy for what it is, but if it had some more talented screenwriters been at the helm, especially to re-write some of the absolutely cringeworthy dialogue, those average bordering on good films (in my opinion at least, I know some of yours is different) may of actually become great films.

I didn't think too much to ROTJ tbh, the opening scenes rescuing Han seem to be there to just pad out the movie a little, and after that, with the rest of the film only having the one important plot point of Vader's redemption, it gave nearly all the supporting characters practically nothing to do.

The battle scene as well in Endor didn't seem as good as the one on Hoth, in my opinion.

So

1) V3.0 would still be despecializing the BD, only using the 35mm scan as a source for the unaltered footage - here's why:

I realize that there's more compression here than there would be in the final release but it still shows pretty clearly that since the BD was scanned from the original negative, it has more fine detail than the LPP print even though the '04 scan is outdated, so a 1080p restoration using a 35mm scan to despecialize the BD could yield similar results to what a professional restoration from maybe an IP could achieve and that's something probably still worth the effort.

Good point, well, if you ever get round to actually doing that, make sure to release a BD50 version :p

Honestly though i'd never seen the N1 transfer, looks incredible, better than some of the films I have on my shelf, the fact that the blu-ray has so many crushed blacks as well where I guess the N1 version won't might be nice too.

As much as a 3.0 would actually be great using a 35mm scan, i'm sort of missing the point here, why would he need to despecialise that.. isn't it already the theatrical cut of Star Wars pre-97?

Also, rather than a million edits of Star Wars, i'd rather see a new ESB & ROTJ to complete the trilogy personally, it's your project though so I can't force you, haha.

I know that feeling, being a 20-year man myself has me lumped into that awkward gap among the generations divided between those who are indifferent about the whole thing and people who are willing to take a step back and reconsider what's being presented to them. I had taken the liberty of experiencing the original trilogy as little as possible to avoid being brainwashed by the versions made commercially available so that my purest memories of Star Wars remain Despecialized.

I'm 21 and try to watch films on Blu-Ray if possible for maximum quality, obviously for the OT this presents some serious problems.

Although.. my older brother had ANH on VHS, no idea on the year/release but I can tell you it definately pre-dated 1997 as it had no gold label, i've only ever seen ESB & ROTJ in it's 1997 and 2004/2011 variants.

I'm more of a big film buff than a huge Star Wars fan (although I think they're great films), and thats why I love projects like this, the labor of love people have for films.
