In the original incarnation of the scene, Lucas said he had 3 squib set ups he had the time and money to shoot, and that all 3 times the squibs didn't go off at the right timing. He said in one shot, Greedo shot way before Han, in another shot, Han shot way before Greedo, and in the take they ended up using they shot at that same time, but you couldn't really tell. (this is from Lucas own words on the Making Movie Magic CD ROM). So he went in and made sure the dialogue made it clear that Greedo planned on killing Han. (you know, the Over my dead body... That's the idea). But I think the problem is a lot of people don't pay too much attention to subtitles, so a lot of kids got the idea that Han just shot Greedo in cold blood. I think he probably heard from enough kids who told him they loved Han the best because he killed Greedo in cold blood, that he felt an obligation to make his intentions more clear.
But either way I don't see how it changes anything about Han. Wether Greedo shot first or not doesn't negate the fact that he flat out told Han he planned on killing him.
I respect that. I have to say I would have preffered an anamorphic struk from a restored print too, but at the same time, I don't think this non anamorphic transfer is horrible. It looks better than the other versions I have bought on home video and the dirt, grain and scratches helps make me feel like I'm really watching it in a '77 theater. Sure the screen isn't as big, but it feels like film again.
I love the digital look of the SE versions, but it does alter the entire feel of the film and is certainly not like what I saw when I was 7 years old (not that my memory is photgraphic or anything, I'm just talking about the feel).
But he's also the reason we had the O-OT to want in anamorphic DVD in the first place is all I'm saying.
I understand the disappointment and frustration, it's just unfortunate to see Star Wars fans following that path to embrace hate over this matter.
There seems to be such a low tolerance of the SE/Prequels, and I think that's a little odd coming from people who loved the OT despite a lot of people saying it sucked. From my recolleciton, I remember trying to explain why I loved the classic trilogy to some people who would just look at me like I was a mindless Lucas automoton. This is talking about the classic trilogy mind you.
Now I see a lot of people who loved the classic trilogy treating others who love the SE's/Prequels like mindless Lucas automotons.
I would think that most of us would understand the concept that different people have different tastes, and as Star Wars fans, I would think we wouldn't be so cavaleir about embracing hate over something that at the end of the day isn't about life or death, we are talking about movies here.
Great movies, but life existed just fine for decades before they came out, and if we could never see them again we would find a way to press on somehow.
I don't know if I would take that sentiment that far. I figure if it keeps people from breaking their FF button while allowing them to still enjoy the movie it can't be all that bad.
That said, I have yet to see one that is actually better than what Lucas had done. So far the one I saw just seemed to cut certain scenes out without repairation. It was in every way a lesser film than what Lucas put out. But if some people really can't stand the full extent of Lucas' taste, I say it's better to enjoy less of the Phantom Menace than to enjoy none of it at all.
According to Lucas, the original negatives of the O-OT were permanantley altered when he created the SE version, and all the prints they have left of the O-OT are in poor quality.
Actually what they did give us is substantially better than a laserdisc rip. I am sure you know they went to the laserdisc master for their O-OT transfer.
I do agree it would be better if it had been anamorphic but at least Lucas did release it on DVD.
Personally I think this is the best the O-OT has looked on home video so far, not counting the 2004 SE version.
I did see one of the Phantom Edits, but I didn't think it was all that good. It was the one that didn't alter Jar-Jar's dialogue. For some reason they cut out some of the more important scenes, and left in some of the more annoying bits with Jar-Jar.
Personally I loved Jar-Jar, but I figured the first priority for making a fan edit like this was to get rid of as much Jar-Jar stuff as possible.
I don't think that was the Magnoliafan edit though.
I was just pointing out that I am glad my parents didn't force their personal taste down my throat, because it allowed me to develope my own personallity unto myself.
Oh well I'm a sucker for irony, and someone coming into this thread to personally attack me, trying to say I'm just here to derail threads by annoying others is comic gold.
I will apologise in advance if my not thinking like some of the rest of you is annoying.
About this letter to Lucas,
I don't understand why this guy didn't just hold on to his laserdisc or VHS copies of the pre-se and not even worry about the new ones if they are going to upset him so much. Now that we at least have the O-OT on DVD, he should be fine now. Maybe not as fine as if it were anamorphic, but better than he was before with just the SE available on DVD.
What I really like about this new individual release of the classic trilogy is the SE disc is in the middle flap thingy. All you do is take that out and throw it away (maybe cut the insert down the middle so you only keep the O-OT chapter listings) and you could just pretend the SE never existed.
Hey I know some of you hate the SE's and George Lucas. But you aren't the only ones who wanted the original trilogy on DVD.
Some of us like the new ones as much as the old ones, and still wanted to have the originals on DVD for posterity.
Feel free to hate me if that's the sort of thing you guys revel in, but I don't see why there can't be a less hateful voice among the torch and picth-fork carrying types.
I don't think the original trilogy was crap. I was just saying my parents thought it was crap and yet they let me make up my own mind about them.
I can see not liking the prequels, but to actually keep your kids from seeing them until they are past childhood, just because you are afraid they might like them if they aren't old enough, well why don't you cancel Christmas while you're at it?
As far as going back to TFN, I can't I was banned for a lenghty duration for saying that this is the best the O-OT has ever looked on home video to date.
I guess they aren't interested in heated debate, and they will just ban people until the forum resembles a sedate nursing home.
All I want to know is why some of you hate with such eagerness? Do you think hate is a good thing to revel in? What good will it do you in the end?
I'm watching ANH (77) right now on my regular 4:3 tv and the aliasing is appearing here as well. It seems like the result of interlacing issues.
I think it looks better than my old VHS and Laserdisc so far.
One thing I am really digging is the film grain. I love the SE's grain-free look, but this just feels like a film again. I feel more like I'm in a theater watching celluloid than when I watch the SE. It all helps to take me back in time.
I have to say the Wal-mart deal is the way to go. The comics they include are full sized cardboard bound graphic novels.
I remember reading those back in the day and these images are like brand new better than the originals I read.
It's all just flooding back now.
Playing Star Wars legos before they had the Star Wars license (I had to make my own X wings and snow speeders out of leftover parts from the "firefighter" lego set!), playing the storybook record for ANH and playing along with my action figures (this was before VCR's) man this is sweet.
Without Lucas, you would have never had these films to complain about in the first place.
I remember growing up with the original films and loving them dearly despite other people who declared them nothing but vaccuous toy commercials with no redeeming artistic quality.
Now we have people who like the classic trilogy saying the same thing about the prequels?
Just as not everyone understood what we loved about the original films, not everyone is going to understand why I love the new ones just as much.
It just amazes me hearing this total lack of consideration coming from people who saw the good in the originals.
I think they mean "Original" as the versions as they were before the SE's.
They got it close enough. They even went so far as to remove the title and episode number from ANH. This is the first time they have released a version of ANH that was this close to the original theatrical release.
Still just because they don't say this is the last time they are doing it, doesn't mean it isn't the last time they are doing it.
With the way a lot of people bag on Lucas either way, I can't say I would expect them to bother again.
