Any Sugestions on A DVD Cover Program?

Or The GIMP, a lot more affordable than the rest (as it is free).

I too use Photoshop, but it is out of the price range of most unless you want to build a career around it. If you're a student then you can get it at academic prices, but still may be out of your range.

Problems Creating an Isolated Score Track
Time
NTSC is slightly slower than the actual film, but music tracks wouldn't generally be long enough for you to notice desynchronisation.

As for you, I think it makes a lot more sense to just speed up the music tracks and then sync that to the unmodified DVD. No sense slowing down the DVD, then speeding up both the DVD and isolated track at the end of the process when you only need to make one change. You'll experience less of a quality drop speeding up the audio than slowing it down. Just make sure that when you speed it up you preserve the pitch.

The only reason I'd suggest doing it the way you posted was if you were going to release an NTSC copy, but if that were the case I'd recommend you just get an NTSC copy of the film, do all your work, then speed the isolated track for resynchronisation with your PAL copy.

The Other side of the 30th Anniversary
Time
The 30th anniversary theatrical run will be in 3D, so next year we'll be able to look as cool as these guys!

http://kineticpast.com/starwars/directors3d.jpg

That photo was taken last year at a conference where George Lucas showed 3D clips of ANH and AOTC. Here's a few quotes from that conference -

“When I first saw In-Three’s Dimensionalization® process I was truly amazed. The 3D was of a quality better than anything I had previously experienced. Seeing my own Star Wars images in authentic 3D convinced me that it would be a whole new way for audiences to be able to re-live the Star Wars films. Dimensionalization® will significantly enhance the realism of any movie presented in this process.”
– George Lucas

“It’s really a beautiful system, and one of the reasons I’m promoting it today is I’m extremely anxious to reissue that old group of films I did so long ago in a galaxy far away,” Lucas said. “When you see some of this test footage, it’s shockingly good, and you can see how people would want to go see it. It means we can repurpose a lot of old movies, and at the same time it really gives a whole new dimension to the movies we’re making now.”
– George Lucas

"The first time I saw In-Three’s work over a year ago all of us at LucasFilm were totally “Wow’d”. We sat there in amazement seeing our own familiar scenes in 3D. I was truly stunned that these guys actually developed a technology that can produce such high quality 3D pictures. The realism that they were able to create was unlike anything I’d ever seen. In-Three has developed an entirely new post production technology. With In-Three’s 3D process film makers no longer have to concern themselves with the complexity, uncertainties, and expense of shooting with dual cameras. Believe me, we have seen a lot of 3D, but In-Three’s is the only one that delivers. We’re sold."
– Rick McCallum, Producer of Star Wars

“I’m here to lend my support along with the other filmmakers in saying that I think this is one of the most exciting developments in cinema to come along for a long long time. The fact that we can now make three-dimensional films that don’t have eyestrain, they’re bright, they’re sharp, they’re clear, there’s no muddiness, there’s no double imaging. The technology now exists to do perfect 3D.”
– Peter Jackson (Video Testimonial at Showest 2005 )

“Though I still love 3D original photography, the technical solution provided by In-Three was a welcome addition to our palette of stereo film-making tools. They were able to add real depth to the 2D video images captured by our robotic vehicles, and these shots blended beautifully with our 3D shots. I predict that their innovative techniques will continue to expand the possibilities for 3D content."
– James Cameron

"After shooting in 70mm 3D for Disneyland's "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience", I know how complicated this format can be. With In-Three's technique, completely convincing depth is created from any two-dimensional film. George Lucas showed me In-Three's work at I.L.M.. Seeing Star Wars in 3D was amazing enough, but when I saw John Travolta singing "Greased Lightning" in 3D I was blown away. It was just like being back on the set. I know every fan in the world would come back to the theater again to see a complete 3D version. The possibilities are mind-boggling."
– Randal Kleiser, Director of “Grease”

"You know, this post process that In-Three is doing, it works. The guys that run it, hundreds of people sit there and they make decisions about what should be close to the audience and what should be far, and they rotoscope and outline them and the computer sort of throws in as well. I don't need to be a part of that. It just happens. It's a service. You pay them X amount of dollars and they give you back your movie in 3-D. They haven't fully done Star Wars yet, but they've done parts of Casablanca and Wizard of Oz. They did part of one of the early Star Wars films – they did a lot of things for the demo. And it looks great... I don't know if you have seen many great 3-D presentations, but they're just amazing and that can really bring you much more into a film than what you're seeing now. And when digital is in place in the theaters, that's going to pretty much be it. The glasses are small and lightweight, you don't get headaches anymore, it looks amazing, and you can design effects scenes in depth."
– Dennis Muren, Senior Visual Effects Supervisor, Industrial Light & Magic

So basically, whether you like it or not, you can expect many new and old 3D releases next year.

Should there be an ULTIMATE EDITION!
Time
I wouldn't be opposed to a new Special Edition. We'd get more material for Special Fan-Editions, but it would also mean Lucas may need to clean up the original source again (and deleted scenes) to have a pristine canvas to work off, one easily transferred to a Blu-ray Disc set.

2. LIGHTSABERS! what went wrong with that. Man pick a color please, are they red or pink, green or blue. In I,II and III the lightsabers look perfect and have the right color. That really needs to change in the trilogy.
Actually, the lightsabers in Episodes II and III are terrible, almost the worst in the entire franchise. So if lightsabers should be fixed they should be fixed in those two first, THEN the OT.

More likely to be on Blu-ray Disc, unless the HD format war really swings in HD-DVD's favour over the next year.

Which will be released thatrically next year, along with the oft-promised three-disc set containing ALL of the previous cuts, plus this new one. Hopefully they've not been shortsighted enough to only prepare an MPEG2 version, but have also got something for HD as well.

Yeah, the news broke here two weeks ago and we can allay your fears about HD versions; both HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions are in the works.

[edit]This is the first time I've seen a mention of the number of discs though (other than this year's two-disc set).[/edit]

[edit2]Dark Horizons doesn't mention a disc number, do you have a link to your other info source?[/edit2]

Done.

I've got the official content for ANH (second version with alternate crawls) and ROTJ; and the official JACKET_P and unofficial content created by The Starkiller for ESB. The ESB disc never featured any DVD-ROM content, the ROTJ disc was the first one to have it.

If you post pics of ESB and ROTJ I'd do the covers!

ESB wasn't released on video for another two years and ROTJ an additional two years, so neither had covers that really matched the original ANH covers.

If you still wanted to create matching covers then you'd probably want to use the artwork from the ESB Style A poster and the ROTJ Style B poster as they are the ones used on all the early video covers (which all looked vaguely like the original ANH cover).

Luke's rope-throwing talents in EP4
Time
It seems so familiar to everyone because in nearly every movie, TV show or book that features the throwing of an item or the attempt to hook an item they miss the first time. It is just a common story element, so when thinking back about the incident we just presume it too was that way, then eventually convince ourselves it too be true later.

It never happened in Star Wars and has been debunked a heap of times (as it is definitely one of the most common Star Wars urban myths).

I'm using Mozilla Firefox.

EDIT: I take it back. I used internet explorer and it worked fine. Very interesting!

Yeah, The Starkiller has embedded them using Windows Media Player, but Microsoft never made an embeddable version for any browsers other than its own.

Starkiller, a better option would be Quicktime Player, but probably the best option would be to use a Flash play button and include the MP3 link for those without Flash installed. You can get a Player Button from musicplayer.sourceforge.net. Just download the latest version of the Player Button version and replace your Windows Media code with the following -

<object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" data="musicplayer.swf?&song_url=sounds/03_stormtrooper_mono.mp3" width="17px" height="17px">
<param name="movie" value="musicplayer.swf?&song_url=sounds/03_stormtrooper_mono.mp3" />
<a href="sounds/03_stormtrooper_mono.mp3">Link</a>
</object>

Just replace the three URLs to the appropriate MP3 file and change the Flash file URL if you don't have it in the same folder as the HTML page. Also, you may decide to move the link on the third lone to outside the object tag so that the link always appears, personal choice.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
ocpmovie, watched most of your cut on YouTube, currently downloading the disc, thanks!

Just a note on you cover, you are unlikely to care, but you are actually using the old version of the DVD Video logo on your cover, it was changed a few years ago, but no one seemed to notice. That said, you legally aren't meant to be using the DVD Video logo anyway as the disc isn't pressed to the spec, but I seriously doubt you'll want to make multiple versions for every format of disc people might burn it onto!

I know I'll be the only one that cares here, but is it possible to get a version without the DVD logo on the front? I just aren't a fan of its placement and cheap glow. No need to worry about the other two, not distracting and easily user removable. Love the cover otherwise!

Is it also possible to get the disc label set for full face printing (and again minus the DVD logo)? I only every print DVDs full face, in fact I'm fairly sure that is the only way I can buy them, never seen printable DVDs in another form. Better yet, could you remove the white template? Serves no purpose other than giving discs white rims if you don't have it set completely correct. [edit]I knew I should have checked the full file first! You did exactly what I always do, don't know why I thought it may be otherwise! [/edit]

Sorry for all the requests, I just really like your work and want to present it as best I can! Thanks again.

I'm so over that ad, seems to be have been shown on every second ad break for the last year! The only one shown more was the Tongue Walk ad for the same beer.

It's not even a big ad, a really big ad. /me waits for an Australian forumer to let me know how lame that joke was.

need opinions on which new system to get?
Time
If the PS3 ends up being a decent Blu-ray player (unlike the PS2 and it's DVD player) then you won't need to buy any additional hardware anyway.

As for most supported, that would be Blu-ray in both movie studios and tech manufacturers. Here's a list of the studios, those currently exclusive to one format have been emboldened. I don't think this list is entirely correct, but it gives you an idea.

HD-DVD - Universal, Warner Brothers, HBO, New Line, Paramount and Dreamworks.
Blu-ray - Sony Pictures (Columbia-Tristar), MGM, Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Paramount, Dreamworks, Warner Brothers, HBO and New Line.

Both systems use all the same video and audio format, but Blu-ray has a higher capacity so there is a potential for less compression or more video. I'm gonna guess that most studios will use the same compressed source for both though as I doubt many will fill the disc space with their feature movie even on the smaller HD-DVD. So I doubt a difference in video quality would be noticable, but you might have more bonuses or less discs in special edition packs with Blu-ray. HD-DVD dual layer is 30GB, Blu-ray dual layer is 50GB. The HD-DVD camp have got a triple layer 45GB disc working, whereas the Blu-ray camp have a six layer 200GB disc working.

Currently Blu-ray discs will be more expensive to produce than HD-DVD, but if this generation lasts as long as DVD (unlikely) I think it is highly likely Blu-ray discs will end up the cheaper of the two.

One thing I'm excited about (after hiring so many unwatchable DVDs) is Blu-ray's new hard coating (TDK's Durabis) on the disc. Again more expense, but it is a lot better protection than previous optical discs. The media hype is 100 times the scratch resistence of DVD. It is also smudge and dust resistant and can be cleaned with a tissue (which of course scratched DVDs). When they announced the coating they gave each journalist a marker and steel wool and asked them to try damage the discs. The only guy that succeeded was one who pulled out his pocket knife! HD-DVD is essentially the same as DVD, uncoated Blu-ray is a lot worse than both (before Durabis was introduced Blu-ray discs were going to have to go in caddies like DVD-RAM).

What Movie/TV Show is this?
Time
Well, that was quick! I was sure the movie was going to be easy for others (even with my very muddy description!), but I didn't think the TV series would be answered so fast, all in the first post; great! Now to find a copy and make a fan-edit featuring a cat sidekick so I can relive my 'memories'!

Now, I've forgotten what other shows I wanted names to; so I'll just have to try help others.

What Movie/TV Show is this?
Time
Just been thinking about old TV shows and movies I have vague memories of, but can't remember any names of; so I thought I'd start a thread for everyone to ask others what those shows are that bug you at odd hours of the night!

I'll just start with two requests, don't want to flood a thread too early! Both of which I can't remember if I actually enjoyed!

First, a movie. An '80s fantasy movie, featuring a group of adventurers that end up having to climb a huge tower (or cliff). In it was a tiger (possibly white) that was really a transformed princess or prince or villian. Earlier in the movie the group meets a cyclops, who they initially fight, but then joins the group. For some reason I used to think it was The Princess Bride, which it obviously is not!

Next, a kids TV show, which I'm guessing was British and from the early '90s. I only thought of it because I read a thread elsewhere asking for another TV show called 'The Odyssey', but I don't think I'd ever seen that one, doesn't ring any bells anyway. Anyway, back to the show I'm thinking of. It ran for a few seasons, and I think a character was called Teabag. In fact most of the characters (or maybe only baddies) started with T. I think the main character had to collect letters (like Ts) or keys or something. I think the main baddie was a woman. There may have been a cat character too, though I'm probably just thinking of Sabrina now!

Anyone else need help with odd memories?

Blade Runner Finally Gets It's Due

I wonder how much I'll have to pay for the uber-edition which I'll be buying just to have the real movie... you know, the one I saw in the theater and got hooked on. The one that I don't need 4 revisions to tell me that I fell for a piece of unfinished crap or a work-in-progress.

*sigh* Ridley Scott... George Lucas V2.0

Totally different scenarios. George Lucas basically had control of his movie for the entire production, whereas Ridley Scott lost the control to the studio executives, who then modified it away from the script, the director's vision and lead actor's preference. So you'll have a hard time convincing most fans that the theatrical release is the 'real movie'.

George Lucas filmed new elements and changed the story from the original script. Ridley Scott deleted new elements and restored the story to the original script. What did he delete? Well one thing was the studio's happy ending. The one that they didn't even film. The one they cut together with stock footage from The Shining. Hard to call it the 'real movie' when the ending is offcuts from a totally unrelated film!

If George Lucas should be compared to anyone it should be the studio execs. If Ridley Scott should be compared to anyone it should Richard Donner. You know, the guy who never got to finish the film his way until the fans demanded the studio release his cut. I don't remember Star Wars fans demanding George Lucas change his story. OK, well, not until he had already changed it!

By the way, I've only ever seen Blade Runner once, years ago, and all I remember is I wasn't too impressed with it at the time, I'm not even sure what cut I saw (I presume it was the 1992 'Director's' Cut). I'd probably prefer the theatrical cut like you, but I'd never think that it was the 'real movie'. But then, I like most of the Star Wars Special Editions!

[edit]Hehe, just another thought, you should really like this new release because you'll actually be getting four theatrical releases! The Final Cut will be the only theatrical experience of Blade Runner I'll have, so I'm glad they are letting me buy it the way I first enjoyed it at the cinema (hopefully)!

We all know George Lucas will continue to tinker with his films (for example, next year's 3D release), whereas we could probably sue the BR producers if another version came out, since this next cut, the first cut Ridley Scott has got to work on himself, is being labeled the FINAL Cut. George on the other hand releases 'Editions'.

On a more serious note, I wouldn't get too worried about this release 'til we get more details. At the moment I'm more inclined to believe that most of the discs' content will be made up of bonus features and the four cuts will mostly be seamlessly branched (at least the two 1982 releases should be only one disc, as I gather there is very little different between them); so hopefully your Blade Runner DVD experience will be like your Legend experience.[/edit]

[edit2 (OK, not really the second edit, I'm as bad as George!)]
