Well, if I re-do these edits one day in HD I'll try to have better QC. It's still a thousand times more entertaining than the original, I suppose. ;-)

Any chance you can just modify the affected DVD files and pop them up for download? I can provide the FTP account if need be, but I'm currently not familiar enough with the DVD format to know if that is possible. If it is possible maybe throw a readme in with it warning people to back up their old version so they can continue seeding the disc whenever they want.

PM me if you need the FTP account.

I am thrilled to have the chance to go back to something I composed in 1977 and be able to make the entire saga continuous theme-wise. Notably absent in the first movie is the Imperial March. Being able to insert that theme in the first movie will create a much stronger emotional flow throughout the Saga.
...
After the release of Episode III George will enhance the original trilogy with additional scenes and special effects, adding my adjustments to the score this will seamlesly branch the entire Star Wars Saga into one massive romantic space opera. I think something of this magnitude has never been done before.

Just an idea I thought of a coordinated effort to inform SW forum members of the OOT preservation efforts
Time
Actually, if you bring the war to him this site probably will receive C&Ds simply because LucasFilm has to be seen to be protecting their copyrighted material.

It is quite complicated, but LucasFilm can know about this site (which I'm sure they do), but don't have to do anything 'til it is publicly known that they know about the site (which would occur if we mentioned it on their own site). If it does become publicly known then if they do nothing then they actually bring trouble on themselves, if someone does start selling the OOT illegally then the crooks can bring up this case in court if LucasFilm ever sued them. The fact that LucasFilm had previously done nothing would help the crooks, so LucasFilm will basically HAVE to go after us, even if they don't want to (which I guess is the case or they already would have sued us).

A little hard to comprehend if you don't know too much about copyright, but just take it as a recommendation NOT to spam the SW.com boards. I'd say feel free to spam any non-Lucas affiliated sites (as DarthAstuart mentioned), but as a forum administrator and user, I really dislike spam campaigns. They will just make forum users think we are over-zealous jerks and make a mental note never to visit this site.

So I strongly recommend that we just keep doing what we currently do, telling interested friends and associates about it in regular conversation or forum posting. If anyone was really interested in this sort of thing and were internet savvy then they can find this site very easily themselves (if they weren't internet savvy then they wouldn't be interested in visiting a site or downloading DVD content anyway). Remember there are already thousands of people that have signed the petition and probably several thousand more that haven't signed because they know online petitions do absolutely nothing! This cause doesn't really need more publicity, heck, I'm here and I don't even think of myself as much of a SW fan!

Choice is simple really, I don't want to kill worthwhile projects and make myself look like a jerk.

A script for a new scene in ANH
Time
I've further tweaked the script, translating it into English (a little may have been lost) and making it a little easier for audiences to understand.

NEW SCENE: "Vader's Return to Coruscant"

..................................................
..................................................

EXT. CORUSCANT - RAINY NIGHT SKY

In the distance we see Vader’s shuttle
flying downward through vast clouds formations.

EXT. IMPERIAL BASE

Thunder and lightning strikes as it
pours down heavily onto the Capital
planet.

INT. SHUTTLE COCKPIT

(Captain Nic Olie)
It's raining! On a city-covered planet!
How is that possible?!

Darth Vader slaps Nic Olie across the
back of the head.

EXT. IMPERIAL BASE

Vader's damaged shuttle docks
upon a watery landing platform.

INT. IMPERIAL BASE - MOMENTS LATER

The sound of the rain is prevalent
as it is heard through open areas along
the perimeter of the base. Droids,
stormtroopers and gungans are
visible as they scatter about.

Hovering beside Vader as he walks is a
holographic transmitter displaying the
ominous form of Palpatine.

(Palpatine)
Lord Vader, the topic of tonight's
discussion will be: 'The destruction of
our battle station and defeat at the
hands of a pitiful band of rebels'. It
would seem...this so called alliance
has shown greater resolve then
I had foreseen.

(DarthVader)
Yes, master.

Vader continues walking slowly as the
holographic transmitter follows beside
him flickering out slightly.

(Palpatine)
We have lost a great deal.
(a beat)
Governor Tarkin is not as easily
replaceable as others may be...Lord Vader.

Vader recognizes what Palpatine has implied,
but believes some of the audience may not have.

(DarthVader)
Master, I have destroyed Obi-Wan Kenobi, my
old Master who was present when you
commanded me to kill your last apprentice,
Count Dooku.

(Palpatine)
Is that so? This may explain
the tremor I have sensed in the
force. If your former master
survived though, I wonder then -
if other Jedi may have survived
too?

(DarthVader)
No, that is not possible. Order 66 has now been fulfilled.

Darth Vader removes his mask revealing
the eyebrowless face of Hayden
Christensen, winks at the camera,
then replaces his helmet.

(Darth Vader)
Master what about the destruction of the Death Star?
We could be vunerable to Rebel Attacks.

(Palpatine)
I have already contacted my men, a new Grand Moff,
Jerjerrod from Endor and his men are already planning
a more powerful weapon that will keep the galaxy
under my control. The Alliance and the Galaxy must not
know about this, but make sure everyone in the Milky
Way galaxy do find out.

(Darth Vader)
Yes, my master.

(Palpatine)
Lord Vader, I am putting you in charge of the Empire,
ignore what I implied earlier about possibly killing you.
Your failure to protect the Death Star has given me the
confidence to finally take a special holiday on Kashyyyk.
Your first main priority is to locate All Your Rebel Base you
encounter and take the troops and cease control of it.
Once the control has been stopped, you may seize it.
Your second main priority is to combat redundancy.
Do what must be done and see that the Rebellion will
suffer for this poor grammatical outburst.

A commander is seen approaching.
Vader senses that the commander
needs to speak urgently.

(DarthVader)
Yes my master, the Rebellion will be crushed soon enough.

(Palpatine)
Yes...see to it my 'more able than Darth
Maul' apprentice.

The Emperor's holo image disappears.
Thunder cracks again.

(DarthVader)
What is it Commander?

(Commander)
I apologize for the intrusion my Lord.
However, we have attained the identity
of the lead fighter Pilot instrumental
in the attack on our battle station.

(DarthVader)
Yes?

(Commander)
Dreis sir...Garven Dreis. You managed to
kill him though so you may be more
interested in the pilot that actually
destroyed the Death Star, Luke Skywalker.

Vader is taken back by this news.

(Commander)
M'Lord...

The Commander takes leave of Vader.

Vader looks out onto the rainy Coruscant
night. He drifts into heavy thought.

(Darth Vader)
Yes... how the hell does it rain here?!

Glad I could help!

Well, I just looked through the PSP9 manual, and it is missing justified alignment. I've always found manual justification looks weird, so maybe you just want to change it back to regular left align. If you'd still like it justified though you could send the back cover blank to me and I could align the text for you, it shouldn't take long at all.

English is my first language and I'm having trouble thinking of how to fix it up! Maybe just make this change, 'the traitors will soon be within my grasp'. I would say the sentence before that differently, but I don't know if Darth Vader would!

I missed another small error the first time, 'h' is missing in 'as my Master has foreseen'.

What graphic program are you using? I see you have tried to align the text justified using manual spacing, maybe I could help you align it correctly. If you used Photoshop then the Text Alignment commands are in two different spots, the four Justify buttons only in one of those two. To find them go to Window > Show Paragraph. That will bring up another palette with all the Alignment options, you'll want the 'Justify last left' button. You'll probably also like to unselect the 'Hyphenation' checkbox.

If you are using a different program, let me know and I'll see if I can help.

Well, I was meaning the general Amaray-style cases, not particularly the actual brand. By average I simply meant the standard, and standards are boring! As for being cheap, comparitively to the other case options they are very cheap, hence why Hollywood adopted it for its standard (same reason most of the studios are backing HD-DVD and not Blu-ray, nothing really to do with what is best). I'm not against cheap (more often than not it is all I can afford) and quality Amarays are both practical and easy to customise, so for me my only problem is I find them boring (that and too many companies use cheap covers that warp way too easily).

I actually perspective-corrected your pics to measure it against CDs and DVDs, looks like they scale perfectly. The only problem with my funny label idea is most black media has a clear centre which would be visible and isn't found on Laserdiscs.

The problem with custom Digipaks is you'd pretty much have to rip apart existing digipaks to get the tray to glue to the new design (which you'd have to clean pretty vigorously to remove the residue from the original case). You can order blank paks, but they'd be a pain to print on, especially because most come with the tray pre-glued. To get a decent result you may need to get them professionally produced, which of course isn't really financially viable (unless you produced a large batch and then sold them, but then you would likely get some mail from Lucas Legal!).

I personally don't like Amarays too much (so cheap and now too average) so all my own films and custom covers for existing DVDs will be going into Super Jewel Box Kings (hopefully they will end up being 'average'!).

If you did feel like going the Digipak style then there are some other similar styles that are quite cool. Burgopak DVD designs are pretty funky, you can order some samples from their site, if you were careful you could rip them apart and find out how they work and make your own (again you'd need the plastic trays though).

If anyone is feeling arty then there are various designs on the net for all cardboard designs (and even some wood designs).

But I think the most appropriate design for Laserdisc restoration projects would be mini LD folding sleeves! Here's a quick Photoshop mockup for you all...

http://benn.antiskeptic.com.au/Mini_LD-DVD_covers.jpg

All you'd need to do is label both sides of the DVD disc hubs, leave the rest bare, purchase a magnifing glass so you can read the cover notes, then ZAP! 'Honey, I shrunk the Laserdiscs!'

[edit]Actually, I haven't seen a Laserdisc in many years (if I've actually seen a disc out of its cover at all), so I was only guessing that the discs were labeled on both sides. Were they the same as most vinyl or were LDs different and only had the label on Side A?[/edit]

How did you come to this conclusion, I thought that Lowry had done a phenomenal job with the bad source footage? Now I'm curious, any examples on the DVD where they could have done better?

Who here has the hundreds of terabytes of storage needed for such a restoration? Surely the LOC wouldn't give it to anyone who couldn't do it properly, that would be irresponsible as it would degrade the footage, meaning a worse result for the group who could do it properly in the future.

I've read the same page as you, but Franklin doesn't match what's on the Special Edition Laserdiscs, and the font size is meaningless if you don't know the size of the image it was being written to. The o has vertical sides, for example, much like the O in A NEW HOPE on the title crawl. But the LD has a fancier g than the Univers font. AlternateGotNo3D is an almost perfect match.

I haven't checked the subtitles on the prequel DVDs, but they may have been prepared by the DVD team. IIRC, the subtitles on the OT DVDs are some completely other font, and not very Star Wars-y.

DE

Righteo, funnily it looks like the PT VHS may have used yet another as it appears to use a single-storey g as opposed to the LD and cinema double-storey (I don't have any proper copies, only an old copy of the first disc of the Phantom Edit 1.1, so the editor may have replaced them).

I was actually going to mention about the meaningless point size myself, don't really know why they bothered mentioning that!

Both my OT and prequel DVD sets use player-rendered subtitles for the aliens, don't know if the PAL version of the OT was different to the US release.

As for the Demi Bold issue, it was just Demi (and they just used the long form, even though it isn't the official name used by Linotype).

This movie was never banned, it simply was 'retired' by Disney due to the controversy that surrounded it even way back before the film was created. 'Retired' doesn't actually mean much for Disney though as they officially 'permanently retired' the film in 1970, then released it cinemas again two years later (then again in '81 and '86)! It was only as recent as 2001 that the video was finally dropped from stores outside of the US, but that probably more has to do with the 'death of VHS' and the financial repercussions of continuing to produce the VHS than anything else. You may wonder why a international DVD hasn't been released if that was the case, but if so then you obviously don't know about Disney's video and DVD release history. They never released every video at one time and often cancelled their big movies to create consumer interest, it is often 'the last time' to buy a Disney classic on video. So currently there are several more Disney movies that aren't available in any format that would be much more popular than Song of the South.
