Am I the only one who is worried that Starkiller spends his time looking under Friar Tuck's robes?!?!?!?

No worse than a 10-year-old with the Jabba Slave Leia action figure!

Harry Potter *Spoilers* (Serious Discussions Only, No Flaming)
Time
Well, I'm admittedly one of those teens who stood in line at midnight to get a book. It was with my own debit card, though. I started reading at 1:15 in the morning and finished at 2:15 the following afternoon. It was a trip. When you have that little sleep, and it's that early, and you keep going for that long, it really saturates your brain. It's kinda creepy.

I wasn't surprised that Dumbledore died. In fact, I'd been expecting it for several months, so I was glad when it happened, so I could rub it in the faces of my non-believing friends! To be honest, though, I'm not quite sure what the whole Half-Blood Prince thing had to do with anything else related to the plot, or maybe I've already forgotten the connection...

By the way, Sessler, you beat me to the punch again because I'd been planning to start a thread like this!!!

Of the six Star Wars movie which is your LEAST favorite?
Time
I don't really HATE any Star Wars movie, to be honest, even the prequels, but my least favorite is The Phantom Menace. Besides the fact that all the space vehicles looked like they just came off the showroom floor, and it introduced the hightly ineffectual battle droids, it just left you thinking, "What in the world does this movie have to do with anything?!" They really could have just started off with Attack of the Clones, and you really won't have felt like you were missing anything. Still, the lightsaber duel admittedly kicked ass.

I was tempted to wonder how in the world anybody could pick Star Wars as their least favorite Star Wars movie (and I guess I'm still doing that) since it started it off, its plot fell back so well on the familiar archetypes, it was nominated for best picture, etc., etc. And while I still don't see how people can pick that one as their least favorite, it really is a subjective thing, and, just because it was first and just because it did this and did that isn't necessarily a reason to like it. But I like it. It's fun, it's thrilling, it's classic!

Will...er, I mean Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Time
It's been forever since I read the book, and I wasn't looking forward to the movie very much (I just knew I'd probably end up seeing since my girlfriend really wants to) until I saw this special for it on E! It shows this clip where, after Augustus meets his end, the Oompah Loompahs come out and sing this song about how much he sucks. And Charlie asks something like, "But it just happened to him... How are the Oompah Loompahs singing about him?" And Wonka replies, "Excuse me, improvisation is key to any performer," or something like that. That cracked me up. Anything that can be that self-aware (especially when it comes to characters in musicals knowing all the words to the songs) and pull it off successfully is pretty good in my book. If the rest of the movie is that campy, I think I'll enjoy it.

That's what I meant when I said it could go too far the other way. Every person who works on a movie has some kind of impact as to how it turns out. At the same time, one single change of staff is most likely not going to alter a movie extremely signifcantly. Of course, we'll never know whether Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back would be better or worse without Gary Kurtz.

Quotes from Gary Kurtz
Time
Oh, yeah, that's right. This conversation is in two different threads. You're probably right on a lot of points, joe_H, but I think you may be backlashing a little on Kurtz due to the fanboys who worship him do so because of their own backlash against Lucas/McCallum/whoever. I mean, obviously Kurtz isn't completely incompetent, otherwise he and Lucas wouldn't have worked together as long as they did. And, based on interviews I've seen and read (granted, it's pretty much solely based on Empire of Dreams and the Kurtz interview), they seemed to have had some sort of collaboration and trust. So he shouldn't be credited with making Star Wars what it is, but give credit where credit is due.

And to all those McCallum bashers out there, well, the nephew of Michael "Basil Exposition" "Logan" York can't be all bad, huh?

And I know I myself have called McCallum a yes man in the past, but these newer discussions have convinced me that he's not as bad as he's been made out to be, just as Kurtz isn't as great as he's been made out to be. When you balance out both extremes of the pendulum, you'll find the truth somewhere around the middle.

I just want to step in for a second and say that I'm really glad my thread has gotten off the ground like this. It didn't really get off the ground in exactly the way I planned, but... I'm glad to see I've inadvertantly started a discussion here. This is the newb in me showing, but the last threads I've started didn't really go anywhere, so I'm still excited about this.

And I've been meaning to get involved, but my knowledge doesn't really rival The Bizzle's, so I haven't been wanting to reply simply with, "Yeah, I agree!" because there's really no point to it. So this is really the best I can do on this topic. And I do agree. It's wrong to deify Gary Kurtz just because the movies he produced happened to be (arguably) the best two Star Wars movies. You might as well say that the Key Grip is responsible for the overall quality of a movie. I know that's going a bit too far to the other side, but you get the point.

George Lucas using co-writers
Time
Wow, that's a lot of details I didn't know. I didn't know he had gotten help on the Episode II script. I also didn't know that he attempted to contact Kasdan to write the prequels. But, yeah, that's a pretty stupid thing to do if he did indeed ask right before principal photography started. Maybe George can work under those conditions... but we all know how his dialogue comes out. ^_^

Did George actually have an "original vision?"
Time
Well, he obviously does care enough about Chewie to want him and Leia taken to his ship. He's probably much more valuable alive (for his information about the Alliance) than dead.

And, just because he placed value on the droids in his past (just like he placed value on the lives of his human companions) doesn't mean he'd have the same value on them when he became evil. Like I said, he even turned on the humans closest to him, so him caring about droids... it just doesn't seem like it would happen.

Ehhh... it's one of those things I'm sure you can interpret to mean that little Ani is looking out for his creation. But I'd be willing to bet money that isn't the case. For one thing, I, as many others believe, Anakin didn't build 3PO until Phantom Menace. Two, it just doesn't fit with Darth Vader's character. He doesn't have any value for human life (including that of those close to him like Padme and Obi-Wan), so why would he have any value on a droid?

It's a nice observation, though.

But isn't that what makes these boards great? The ability to go willy-nilly and crazy? Okay, sure, it can get out of hand sometimes (not naming any names), but I'm enjoying this a lot more compared to the Final Fantasy Online boards where they have about 15 moderators, one of whom will ban you if you disagree with his opinions.

New Ranking Ideas?

Well, if you want to get technical, is "Ready for the Trials" really a status in the first place? I mean, if you're ready for the trials, you're still a padawan who's just... ready for the trials until he completes the trials and becomes a Jedi Knight. I guess what Klingon was getting at (and if not, I suppose I'm going to) is that there could be more specific trial levels.
