It Scares Me, Mommy!
Time
Alright, so I get home safely from college after an exhausting day of packing, cleaning, loading up the car, driving two and a half hours, and unloading the car to pop in Return of the Jedi on my '04 set. It was the only one I hadn't watched from my last marathon viewing, so I wanted to finish up. And I've had these discs for a year and a half, and I've watched them a fair number of times, but it was like I'd never seen them before! I wasn't even looking, and I saw garbage mattes all over the place! In the space battle, even in the speeder bike chase, which, for the past 11 years, on the '95 set and the '97 set has always looked perfect to me. I've never, ever noticed them before! Even on the '04 set, the only time I ever saw garbage mattes was in the TIE chase in Star Wars. Now, when I say in other threads that I want the matte lines and garbage mattes to be retained, let me make myself clear: I don't want them removed. I want them as visible as they originally were in theatres or in other original version releases. I've never seen them before, and I know at least one person here has said that his dad never noticed them in theatres. The garbage mattes are supposed to be there, but they've always been (except in maybe a few cases) nearly imperceptible. I don't know what the hell is wrong with these DVDs that suddenly make them so apparent. So I would like them (the garbage mattes, the matte lines, in the few times they are visible, are fine) to be not quite as visible, but I'm worried that that would cause them to go in and tinker... digitally remove them, paint over, stuff of that nature. But I find it very strange that they're suddenly popping up now when I've never noticed them before, even on this set.

As long as I'm here, let me just say that, even though I prepared myself for it, my heart still skipped a beat when suddenly Hayden appeared next to Ben and Yoda. It took me by surprise. And his second appearance isn't that bad (I mean, when it cuts to Luke and then cuts back to the ghosts), but his first... He just has this creepy, "Whoah, what the hell am I doing here?" look (which is precisely what we're thinking). But he's just looking around, his head's wandering around all over the place. It's just weird. I finally pinned down what's so weird about that shot, so I just decided to go ahead and write it here.

Eh, I wasn't too impressed with the dub. I mean, it was tolerable and not bad at all (especially compared to some truly hideous dubs, like DBZ, but you can't get much worse than it, so that's not exactly saying much), but it still doesn't hold a candle to the original.

THAT'S WHY I HAVE BOTH VERSIONS.

Well, the DVD has both audio tracks, so...

And BrikHaus, I think this was a big improvement from Spirits Within. I mean, I haven't seen it in a while, but I know a lot of the backgrounds looked nearly photorealistic this time, and there were a lot of times the characters did too. Obviously, the less grounded in reality a character design is, the more obvious his/her nature beacame (ex. Tifa and Aerith looked extremely real, Cloud a bit less so, and Loz was much more obviously fake). I thought the story was pretty good... well, that is to say, the character story was really good. The "plot" story was more or less there to push the character story along. I'm not really a fan of dubs in general. I'd much prefer to watch any foreign film in its native language. Dubs are almost always inherently worse, simply because of the nature of the work.

Glad to hear it! Because I'm less than 100 posts away from passing you! And I can certainly take the challenge. I finished my last final yesterday and moving back home tomorrow, so I'm likely to have plenty of time to wage war against you! Mwa-ha-ha-ha-ha! (devilish laugh!)

Why the first two are better
Time
Ah, I've read so many posts in this thread in the past few minutes that I'm not sure what I'm replying to, but as CO made the last post, and that's fresh on my mind, I just want to say that I love the end of ESB. So wonderful. I love the music in that end scene so much. Luke is reunited and made almost whole again. Lando and Chewie are out to explore new worlds. Lando has totally earned my trust at this point, and he looks pretty cool in Han's old vest (I never have seen an action figure in that ensemble, even though I have both Bespin and General Lando). Wonderful ending to my favorite movie in the series. By the way, does anybody know where I can find links to reviews that came out when the movie was first released? I'm dying to read what negative things reviewers could say about it! I can't think of what could be wrong with it!

And I thought the Jabba scene dragged on too long too. But recently I'm thinking that it allows us to have some badly-needed footage of all the good guys working together. Think about it. Luke had spent most of the last movie on his own with Yoda and R2 (not that that's bad, but Yoda was a new character at that point, not an established one) while the other main characters got to spend time with each other, developing the relationships they began in the first movie. And then, it wouldn't be much longer before Luke was gone on his own again with Vader and the Emperor until the very end. Luke really becomes the loner character of the big three in the sequels. And it's the only time getting to see Lando fight alongside Luke and Han since, almost immediately after this point, he's doing his own thing for the rest of the movie. While it's definitely important and finally gives his character a chance to shine, it completely destroys any kind of intercharacter-relationship development that could have been going on. And his character definitely needed that, especially with Han, after the events of the previous movie. It warmed my heart to see them embrace at the end montage and their joking during the passoff of the Falcon, but so much more could have been done with that. It really irked me that Han just accepted Lando's help without so much as a question. At least some banter about Lando's betrayal would have been nice.

And of course, Jedi contains one of the few, really big plot holes in the original trilogy: C-3PO as a storyteller. While I enjoy it because it's interesting, it completely contradicts his claim in the first movie that he's not an interesting storyteller... unless he's being modest. Or at some point during the trilogy, Luke thought it would be cool to install a storytelling chip in his droid to keep him from being so stuffy and annoying (just kidding, I love 3PO... except in the PT where he really is the most annoying character... more so than Jar-Jar... "I'm beside myself," indeed!)
