Expecting too much of George Lucas?
Time
To somewhat retract a previous statement, I want to talk more about Obi-Wan's explanation in Jedi about Luke's father. I said before I don't mind the explanation about why he covered it up. But when I first watched it at age 9, and he said, "Luke, you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view," I immediately thought, "They're setting up something." But just like the Leia as Luke's sister thing, nothing ever came of it, and I was quite disappointed. I'm not sure how differing points of view would have fit into the story, but the exact wording of the line did make it seem like it would be brought up again later on.

Am I the only person who thought this?

What did the Prequel Trilogy need?
Time
If you watch The Original SW Lucas knew when it was time for comedy and time for drama. Just watch the ObiWan/Luke talk about Lukes father in ObiWans hutt. Right before it gets to the key conversation in the movie, C3PO says, "If you don't need me anymore sir, I am going to shut off for a while." That is Lucas understanding in 1977 that we don't need to hear annoying C-3PO while Obiwan talks about the force, the lightsaber, and Lukes father being killed by Vader.

Honestly, even if 3PO hadn't been shut down at that point, I don't think he would have said anything. It's not in his character, especially not in the first movie. He knows he's a servant. He wouldn't start spouting off whiny, prissy chatter at a somber moment, just like he didn't say anything when Luke was grieving over Ben later on. The droids just watched with sadness, and R2 gave a tiny whine. But like I said, especially in the first movie, he wouldn't have gotten in the way. In the sequels, where he got more tinny and whiny... eh, possibly. In the prequels, he probably would have said, "That's whack!" or some other pop culture phrase that's totally out of place.

Audience reaction to the reveal?
Time
Honestly, I didn't know when I first saw it in 1995. I guess I was lucky... except that my stupid mother kept telling me while I was watching the movie, "I'm pretty sure that Darth Vader is Luke's father." Thankfully, I was so young and so not trusting about my mom's knowledge of anything that I flat out rejected it as being true. And so when I saw it, it was still a shock. I was about to eat crow, but I told myself that it's possible that it could have been a lie.

Even though slapstick humor and fart jokes don't work in Star Wars, at all, I can still find myself laughing at them a little bit as a guilty pleasure. For me, I get amusement from the idea of someone "failing upwards," like Rick McCullum or some other foolish person. Again, there's nothing particularly good about him, but I can tolerate him in my amusement I guess I could say. Also, I was always sort of impressed in a technical way at how they could make a digital character look almost decent next to everybody and on real movie sets (most notably after seeing how horrible the digital Jabba looked in those scenes with Han Solo in the special edition of Star Wars).

Yeah, I agree. I never really had any problem with Jar-Jar, although it's fun to make fun of him, and I didn't really miss him when he started to magically disappear.

It still makes absolutely no sense to me that they didn't bother to create a single Clone Trooper outfit for either of those two movies. They just look so damned liquidy plastic in every closeup, and the reflections on their visors are just hideous! And to a degree of comparison, I can almost understand it when they're useless cannon fodder. But then you get to ROTS where a clone trooper (Cody) is a supporting character with interaction and a decent amount of screen time, yet they couldn't even be bothered to build a suit even for him! Instead, they just put Morrison in a blue suit. I guess they figured he would have looked too good standing around all those digital lackeys of his.

Admittedly, even I have to chuckle at that a bit.

But in all seriousness, I think we'd be in a lot better shape if all of us (but especially women since they seem to suffer from it more) were satisfied with the way we looked rather than trying to change or enhance physical appearance.

That reminds me. My girlfriend and I went into Victoria's Secret today. Apparently women can now skip plastic surgery altogether because there were bras there made entirely out of silicone with a strap. She started playing with those things, and it made me sick to my stomach. Picturing that little clear blob jiggling still makes me a bit nauseous. I'd take tiny boobs over silicone any day!

How is the "the fact that Keaton was Batman" is "kinda the point"?
Well everyone knows Keaton as Batman so it would be cool to have him play the Joker in a new film. I dunno - it's postmodern or something.

I still don't get it.

It's just kinda ironic.
